Growing up, one can remember spending birthdays at Spur and getting a birthday song; this team really made this birthday song epic.

Kuils River, South Africa (05 March 2024) – The waiters at the Zevenwacht Spur put on a great performance for someone’s birthday and it is going viral, even now, 10 weeks after it was originally shared.

Sherri Andreas captured the moment while at the restaurant chain and it has left many South Africans reminiscing on the days they got to experience their own birthdays at the franchise. We all have the ear-worm “I don’t know what I’ve been told, but superboy/girl is getting old – don’t you worry, don’t you fear – it only happens once a year! Yo, yo, yo… yeah, yeah, yeah”, living in our brains, just waiting to be reawakened – sorry!

There are actually a few variations of birthday songs from over the past few decades (share your favourite in the comment section).

This new variation is lively and brings all the joy. People have shared that this isn’t a rare performance either, the talented waiteress is known throughout the community for going the extra mile when celebrating a patron’s birthday.

“I totally agree!!!It was my son birthday, and she made his day with her dance moves.,a day he will never forget💯💃🏼😘spur in Zevenwacht’s mall rocks” – @zasjewellery

“Have been there the staff there really love their job. They literally do this to everybody” – @sibusisomakhuvele_

Others said the video gave them the feel-good vibes!

“Give her a huge raise..she deserves it..I felt that vibe just watching the video” – @a_mi01

“Aaah man, I felt like getting into my screen to also clap hands” – @jaffer_enos

Maybe the internet needed to be reminded that life isn’t always so serious, or maybe the energy of these students was just infectiously joyful. Whatever the main reason, a singing prank in a Stellenbosch lecture hall has gone beyond viral with almost 30 million views!

Stellenbosch, South Africa (01 March 2024)—Being a university student means living in the weird space between serious adulthood and laidback youth. Some days, it feels like your whole life is dependent on one assignment. Other days, you might be at the height of feeling young and invincible. But fun should lie in the mix of it all, as should stepping outside of your comfort zone, which is exactly what students at Stellenbosch University got up to thanks to a singing prank that skyrocketed past virality at 28.4 million views and 3.9 million likes.

Maybe the internet needed to be reminded that life isn’t always so serious, or maybe the energy of these students was just so unanimously and infectiously joyful. Whatever the exact reason, a clip of students giving their lecture a High School Musical twist has captured social media users after this rendition of ‘We Are Young’ made people smile.

Watch: Singing Prank in Stellies Unites Students

@timmorrel Ending was worth it🥰 #university #lectures #college #CapCut ♬ original sound – Tim

Shared by TikTok creator Tim Morrel, the clip captured bravery, fun and unity through doing something you have to have a lot of guts to do. Students’ mental health at tertiary levels is known to be a cause for concern; with anxiety and depression sadly impacting so many young people’s journeys through higher education. What was awesome about the clip was not just the singing and joy, but that the whole cohort of students joined in; which means even the anxious, those who feel alone, and those who never considered that they could make others smile simply through a little silliness.

Yes lecture halls are a place of learning, but they should also be a place where students can unite and even learn a few lessons outside of the curriculum—like this lesson in being bold!

Razina and Kabira Dewan have written a book together, highlighting the joyful art of painting rocks and leaving them around SA to be found.

South Africa (29 February 2024) – 11-year-old Razina and her mom, Kabira, have a passion for painting rocks. This passion inspired them to write a helpful book about the subject called “Kindness Rocks“.

Finding a painted rock is supposed to inspire kindness and hope. The idea is to spread a little piece of joy to an unknown stranger. Finding a rock is often a little gift you never knew you wanted.

Most rocks will be beautifully painted on one side and contain some form of information on the back. You are encouraged to snap a picture and share it on the group mentioned on the back if you find one. That way, the original creator can see their rock and where it has ended up.

Razina and Kabira’s book will cover topics like:

  • Everything you need to know about Kindness Rocks
  • What to do when you find a Kindness Rock
  • Ideas Gallery to get your creativity started
  • How to prepare your rocks
  • Where to source supplies
  • Where to hide and find Kindness Rocks in South Africa
  • Kindness Rock Gardens
  • Completing your rock

They are marketing the book to for the complete beginner. Supporting the pair supports Razina’s dream of sharing kindness in rock-art-form.

You can find out more about the book by emailing Kariba here. There are groups based all around South Africa dedicated to the art of painting rocks which you can join here.

Miss Erasmus has been hand-sewing curtains, decorating her classroom door and creating a cohesive space where high schoolers get to learn Life Sciences.

Cape Town, South Africa (28 February 2024) – Miss Erasmus is a high school Life Sciences teacher who decided to turn her bare classroom into a homely space. She shares videos on her TikTok account, all related to being a teacher in South Africa.

Many teachers in South Africa are required to set up their own classrooms and most go above and beyond to create a fun and bright learning space. We all had that one teacher in school whose classroom was the best place to be.

Miss Erasmus is one of those teachers. She has been filming the process of decorating her new classroom, adding her own personal flares. She even included funny biology puns to make the room sciency.

She explains that decorating the classroom brings her great joy. It is mostly self-funded and the effort seems to go a long way with her students. She was given some paint which

Many commenters have encouraged Miss Erasmus for putting in so much effort. And we must agree, it looks great!

The young men at Northwood School got a huge surprise when Canadian celeb Drake shared their war cry cover of his song to 145 million followers.

Durban, South Africa (28 February 2024) – Northwood School shared their war cry cover of Drake’s song ‘Non-stop’ two weeks ago and this week, the Canadian musician shared the war cry cover on his Instagram stories to his 145 million followers. Within seconds, millions of people had seen the proudly South African school and it started trending.

Northwood School is a secondary school based in Durban North that has both day-to-day schooling and provides boarding for students from outside the Durban North area. The young men that enrol in the school have a large offering of education and sporting programmes.

This isn’t the first time a war cry has earned the school headlines. The entire school came together last year to sing Shosholoza for the Springboks. Armed with drums, their powerful voices and endless amounts of gees, the young men added their voices to the growing support for the Springboks.

The young men’s war cry has gone viral and it is not only giving international viewers a reason to smile, but the comment section of the video is filled with South Africans loving the unity and gees the video makes them feel.

This year, the school is celebrating its 75th Jubilee Year and if this is how its starting, we cannot wait to see what else is in store!

Take a look at the viral video below.

Take a look at the ‘Wizarding World of South Africa’ as cooked up by the magic of Artificial Intelligence!

Global (26 February 2024)—You’ve probably never heard of the Wizarding World of South Africa before, largely because it doesn’t exist. Well, up until now. At least, in the world of digital creation.

Thanks to a social media content creator curious enough to ask their AI what the Wizarding World of South Africa might look like, we have an inclination. Yes, the images aren’t real in the sense that they weren’t taken by a person who found the local version of Hogwarts and decided to snap up a shoot (at least, not that we know of). But, that’s really what AI image prompts are all about—making us think beyond what’s possible.

As has become a popular trend on social media platforms, those who have access to image generating AI magic are in the business of creating visuals through a series of prompts or tasks. We’ve seen South Africa visualised in many different and sometimes hilarious ways (AI even outed all of our true lifestyles once). But every so often, an AI showcase about South Africa will come across our social media pages and tickle our curiosity with its unique take!

The Wizarding World of South Africa already sounds like the kind of place many of us would want to be. Except maybe without the local version of Voldemort. According to Moon Sauce’s AI, we’d have an all-too-perfect Patronus, some very serious-looking villains, a Quidditch field worth taking all the hits for and a very patriotic mystical beast. Not to mention a happy ending and a few other magical essentials up our sleeves.

The South African Quidditch Coach

If you’re a Harry Potter fan who’s still waiting for your owl to deliver your letter to Hogwarts in the mail, you might appreciate seeing some favoured features from the epic Potter stories sprinkled with some Mzansi magic.

You can watch the Wizarding World of South Africa here!

A pleasingly muted burble of exhausts (not unlike the low F-sharp of a trumpet); the whine of straight-cut gears; and (if you’re close) the tickety-tick of SU fuel pumps. Just some of the sounds set to tickle ears in KZN’s Central Drakensberg when fans of a much-loved British motorcar gather. Matthew Hattingh reports:

KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa (20 February 2024) – Morris Minor enthusiasts enjoy a knees-up as much as the next fellow and Terry Wilson is no exception.

The 76-year-old Gqeberha (formerly Port Elizabeth) man has been to all but one Morris Minor Owners Club of South Africa national rally since 2000. So you may well imagine how a recent fall that tore the quad muscles from his knees and left him house-bound for six weeks ahead of the club’s biennial get-together had him rattled.

“I nearly went crackers,” says Wilson.

The Cotswold resident tells how he slipped while out walking the dogs. The pain was excruciating. “I just saw white lights,” he says, recalling how he lay in the mud for more than half an hour before someone found him and came to his aid.

The retired Telkom project manager turned part-time mechanic and tour guide (he shows cruise liner tourists the local sights and game parks) is on the mend now.

Terry Wilson on the day he acquired Chris Spinks’ Morris Minor Traveller. Note the EC number plate already fitted ahead of the journey from Johannesburg to its new home in PE.

Trouble is, the rally looms.

The get-together, the 21st edition, runs from 17 to 21 March at the Nest Hotel in KwaZulu-Natal’s Central Drakensberg and Wilson still can’t bend his knees beyond about 80 degrees. That makes getting into and out of the relatively tight confines of his Morris hell, never mind enduring two long days at the wheel that the drive to the Drakensberg entails.

But you can’t keep a good man down.

Wilson says he’s been doing plenty of exercises to speed his recovery and has put a backup plan in place: he says he’ll hitch his wagon – his Morris is a Traveller, one of the sought after station wagon variants, colloquially known as Woodies – behind his bakkie. With the extra space the bakkie’s modern cab affords, Wilson is confident he can make it to the mountains, accompanied by his girlfriend, Jo Robberts.

The couple haven’t quite decided on their route, but are leaning towards travelling by way of Nqanqarhu (Maclear) and Matatiele, depending on road conditions, before pressing on to Underberg.

It’s a fair old drive, but leaving aside Wilson’s injuries, pales beside the many miles facing Western Cape rally-goers.

Frikkie Muller, 72, of Kuilsrivier, will be setting off at 4am with a friend, Emma Carpenter, in her Trafalgar Blue, concours-winning 1969 two-door Morris.

Joining them in convoy will be John and Pat Birkett, in a red Nissan 1400-powered 1959 Traveller, and Ron Clark and Mitford Roberts in a black 1959 two-door.

They plan to meet Oudsthoorn Morris man, Nico Mienie and his wife Alicia, en route and to overnight in Bloemfontein, where they are hoping to persuade Free State members to join them for the final leg to KZN.

There must be something about these not-so-young men and women and, dare we risk the cliché, their magnificent machines, because Muller betrayed not a hint of anxiety about the trek when we spoke recently.

Certainly he’s not fazed by the possibility of a breakdown. He counts seven Morris Minors in his own backyard in different states of readiness and restoration, including a panel van and a Traveller.

The cars are reliable and easy to work on, says the retired technical school teacher, who tells me he cut his teeth as an apprentice mechanic repairing Land Rovers – “horrible to work on” – and other British cars.

OK, so breakdowns aren’t necessarily a big worry, still, won’t driving all that way in a car from an era when ergonomics was in its infancy take the wind from your sails? Consider too that many of the rally-goers are older than their cars.

Not a bit of it, says Tommy Smith, 67, a founder member of the Johannesburg Morris Minor Club.
He rates Morris Minors, “pretty comfortable”.

“I have no problem driving 1000km a day,” says Smith, who with his brother José, will be bringing a 1971 Traveller and a recently restored 1960 bakkie to the rally from Alberton.

Morris
Johannesburg Morris Minor Owners Club stalwart Tommy Smith with one of his bakkies.

The retired diesel mechanic turned health and safety auditor, says that with modern oils and regular servicing (note: no-antifreeze), the Morris A-Series engine is “bullet-proof”. Nevertheless, he’s careful to pack a spare fuel pump – “I’ve been around the block.”

Smith says they do about 55mph (85/90km/h) on the highway which means they get to enjoy the scenery – something drivers of modern, swifter machinery miss out on.

“I just enjoy driving them,” he says of his cars.

Chris Spinks, of Highlands North, Johannesburg, has been attending Morris Minor rallies since 1994, when the Durban club hosted the event at Hibberdene, on the KZN South Coast.

The 83-year-old will join the rally in his ’61 Porcelain Green (“the family call it ‘gangrene’”) – four-door Morris 1000. Spinks has owned the car for 30 years. “It’s still going strong; hopefully it outlasts me.”

Chris Spinks’ four-door Morris Minor at a shopping mall in Bloemfontein during the 2016 MMOC National Rally. Thankfully it didn’t leak oil, like some others did, says Spinks.

As it happens, he previously owned Wilson’s car until the PE man browbeat him into parting with it.

Spinks will be making the trip solo, albeit in convoy with other club members. His wife’s not interested, he tells me cheerfully.

ONE FOR THE AGES: Chris Spinks; grandson Talon, aged three at the time, in Spinks’ then newly restored Traveller. The car now belongs to Terry Wilson of Port Elizabeth, while Talon is a lanky teenager in Perth, Australia.

Like Smith he has no qualms about the cars themselves provided they are properly serviced and, for the sake of comfort, “make sure the seats are in reasonable condition”. But he says sharing the road with heavy trucks on the N3 can take some of the shine out of the trip.

Spinks counsels regular breaks every two hours to stay fresh; “but not every time you pass something interesting… or you tend to find the day passes and you don’t get very far.”

The “happily retired” mining surveyor looks forward to the camaraderie, catching up with old friends from across the country and meeting people.

Smith also mentions camaraderie.

He’s attended “18 or 19” rallies over the years and says meeting members from across the country can be like a reunion with “long-lost family”.

Call it bias if you must, but Morris Minor enthusiasts insist there’s something about their cars and those who drive them that’s, well, fun.

Or as Muller puts it: Other car clubs (he mentions the devotees of a number of other venerable British marques… and we shall say nothing here of BMWs) can be a little snooty, but “we are outgoing and friendly”.
It helps too that so many of the public have such fond memories of Morris Minors.

“If I stop with my car at the service station,” he says, “people come and tell me, ‘My mother had a Morris like that’ or ‘I did my driver’s licence in one’.”

The car was really the first affordable, well-handling and reliable British car to emerge in the post-war years, so inevitably found its way onto thousands of driveways in South Africa… and into countless hearts.

Then there’s its “smiling face” and “you can get it in a bakkie and a van and a convertible”, Muller says, referring to the radiator grill and headlights that give the different Morris Minor variants their cheerful aspect.
Wilson says it’s down to the “people who have Morris Minors… you all have the same illness. Anyone who has an old car has something wrong with them. They have a screw loose.”

Apart from the people, loose screws or otherwise, Spinks says he enjoys tackling the driver’s skills tests and trials that are very much part of the rally.

A busy programme has been planned for the event, including car displays, boot sales, braais, a fancy dress, fun runs, an outing to Spionkop lodge and an optional visit to the Drakensberg Boys’ Choir.

Perhaps the highlight is the Concours d’État, on Monday 18 March. It’s a beauty pageant for cars, but one where judges concern themselves not only with the outward beauty of their subjects, but poke about beneath the bonnet and under the floorboards. They check to see everything is in tip-top shape and that all parts are authentic. Is that a modern fuel pump, I see? Lose a point. Are those nuts stainless…?

There are also categories for modified cars where the judges take a more relaxed view of these things.
Stewart Boik, of rally organisers, the Durban Morris Minor Owners Club, says the public are welcome to attend and can expect to see some fine examples of the breed. These include “half-timbered” Travellers and rare, open-top Tourers – just the thing for a spot of leisurely wind-in-the hair motoring.

Or perhaps you already have a Morris or know of one tucked away somewhere that you might borrow or buy. Although entries for the rally have officially closed, Boik says they will “make a plan” to accommodate latecomers.

To find out more email mmocdurban@gmail.com.

Morris Morris

Note about the writer: Matthew Hattingh is a freelance journalist. He hopes to take his own Morris Minor to the rally… if he can get the gearbox back in the car in time.

Good luck Matthew! We hope you get your chance to join in!

Grab EVERY tissue in your vicinity and get ready for the most beautiful performance by talented South African dancer Musa Motha at America’s Got Talent: Fantasy League.

United States of America (07 February 2024) – Musa Motha is currently in Hollywood, taking part in America’s Got Talent: Fantasy League. Motha, who became a household name after his remarkable journey on Britain’s Got Talent in 2023, continues to inspire audiences globally with his resilience and talent.

His latest performance has left millions of people dabbing the tears from their eyes. For those who have followed Motha’s journey from the beginning, his appearance on America’s Got Talent: Fantasy League is a moment of triumph and redemption. Despite the disappointment of not winning Britain’s Got Talent, Motha has seized the opportunity to showcase his talent on an even grander stage, demonstrating resilience and determination in the face of adversity.

Musa was left in tears the moment his performance ended. The crowd stood in unison for a standing ovation and their cheers reverberated around the stage, causing overwhelm and sheer joy for Motha.

Simon Cowell began the judging process by explaining that he had watched Motha’s talented dance while in the United Kingdom, calling it a moment he would never forget.

Cowell calls Motha’s latest performance captivating, adding that the finals wouldn’t be the right without him. At that moment, Simon stands up and uses his Golden Buzzer to push Musa to the AGT: Fantasy League finals.

“Thank you, Simon. These are the moments where I think about, like, when I was struggling a lot in the hospital and then I kept on seeing people not making it, you know, but this is just a manifestation of everything I was dreaming about [everything] is happening right now.” – Musa Motha

Musa took to his Instagram account to share the moment. He quoted Oprah in his post, saying:

“I’ve come to believe that each of us has a personal calling that’s as unique as a fingerprint and that the best way to succeed is to discover what you love and then find a way to offer it to others in the form of service, working hard and also allowing the energy of the universe to lead you.” – Oprah Winfrey

This is the second time Motha has earned a Golden Buzzer for his performance, solidifying his stake in the competition and showing the world that talent comes from determination.

Take a look at the Golden Buzzer performance below. And we are serious about the tissues – go get them!

South Africa has some incredible rolling thunderstorms in Summer, but thunder is powerful worldwide; the Stellenbosch University Choir performed a song inspired by thunder that left us in awe!

Stellenbosch, South Africa (07 February 2024) – The Stellenbosch University Choir recently added a little thunder to their musical repertoire. The ensemble performed a Latvian Folk Legend composed by Laura Jekabsone which highlights the story of Father Thunder and his nine sons.

Conducted by André van der Merwe, the choir uses their voices to add rain sounds and the power of rolling thunder to the composition. As always, the ensemble left us covered in goosebumps!

The Stellenbosch University Choir was founded in 1936 under the baton of William Morris. After him, various conductors established the ensemble as an influential South African choir.

The choir, an ensemble of approximately 80 – 100 voices, has won international acclaim through performances, concert tours, and participation in prestigious festivals and competitions.

And only a few of the students in the group actually study music!

The University choir is one of the most celebrated choirs in South Africa including various awards from around the world.

As the thunder builds up for South Africa’s summer, we thought sharing this would give you all the chance to enjoy it, even from afar.

“Father Thunder has nine sons:
Three strike; three rumble; three flash lightning!”

Take a look at the incredible performance below.

AI is at it again, and this time, it’s showing people what an ‘Average Day’ in South Africa looks like. They might just be onto us!

South Africa (05 February 2024)—If you’re on the internet often, you’re probably no stranger to the weird (and sometimes wonderful) creations Artificial Intelligence can cook up. From Cape Town’s Avengers to South Africa as a villain, we’ve seen it all. But another recent batch of visuals depicting an ‘Average Day’ in South Africa has us giggling in high notes for its…’accuracy’.

According to the visual story created by ‘AI TRÄSKET’, an ‘average day’ in SA is filled with playing sports, finding treasure and, of course, having an adorable sidekick alongside you for every part of your journey. (No, it’s not a Springbok). We also apparently get very rich, very quickly. There are no shops around us either in the open planes of wildlife we call home, except for one: a Ferrari dealership. Obviously.

Watch: AI Shows People an ‘Average Day’ in South Africa on TikTok.

The video has sparked many giggles from its 2.1 million views for reasons that need little explanation. But, in true South African humour, many locals played along without hesitation.

Here are some of the comments:

“My Meerkat and I found a diamond yesterday.”—Gary Shell.

“Finally, accurate South African representation!!”—Omfile.

“I’m saving my gold chunk for a rainy day.”—Brandon Wessels.

“Anyone want to exchange meerkats? I think mine is broken?”—Kgopolo Mphuthi on her meerkat not leading her to excessive amounts of gold.

“My elephant is too lazy to carry anything, he spends his day getting drunk on Amarula.”—Isabellé

“Yes this is true. I unfortunately don’t have an elephant cause you need a license but I’ll get one soon,”—@fofo.

“My meerkat doesn’t want to play rugby with me :(“—Nthati.

We’re not sure which South Africans actually identify with this ‘average day’, but if you’re out there, we need to see you and your meerkat urgently.
