Under-resourced Cape Town artists got a creative hand-up recently thanks to a big masterclass led by the City to elevate artistic opportunities!

Cape Town, South Africa (16 February 2024) — Cape Town and creativity go hand-in-hand. But making sure more creatives get their chance to make their mark on their home means that more opportunities have to become accessible, which is exactly what a recent masterclass did for 20 emerging Cape Town artists!

Many resources go into creating visual art—from materials and canvases right down to knowledge. For under-resourced and underprivileged artists who desperately want to start or elevate their careers, a lack of access is an obvious challenge.

So, in an effort to better equip under-resourced Cape Town artists who can play such an important role in the vibrance of the City, the City of Cape Town organised a masterclass as part of its Emerging Artist Programme.

The Emerging Artists programme focuses on a spectrum of support for Cape Town artists, including exhibition opportunities. Adding the masterclasses into the mix has added another element to the creatives’ journey—more skill-based knowledge to fuel the creative and craft processes.

Where the first Emerging Artists Masterclass focused on canvas prep, the recent session helped give artists a hand-up by being taught about colour theory, brush techniques and paint mixing. The third will happen in March, when the spotlight will shine on installation.

“Our emerging artists bring diversity to the industry. They represent a multitude of cultures, backgrounds and artistic approaches. This is reflected in the variety of artworks and broadens our artistic landscape,” said Mayco Member for Community Services and Health, Patricia van der Ross.

Since art gives the City so much to be proud of, it’s only fitting that the City is giving its budding creatives more opportunities to take pride in themselves!
