South African piano prodigy Jason Haas has just received a surprise gift during a Drakensberg Boys Choir concert, showcasing the power of community and determination.

Johannesburg, South Africa (03 March 2024) – Jason Haas’ story of passion, perseverance, and the power of community captured the nation’s attention, and now we have the update you have all been waiting for! The 15-year-old piano prodigy’s journey from the keys of his grandmother’s piano to desperately trying to crowdfund for his own instrument, to the stage of the Drakensberg Boys Choir School embodies the essence of musical magic.

From the tender age of 4, Jason’s fingers danced across the keys of his grandmother’s old piano, captivated by the melodies that seemed to unlock a world of possibilities. With no formal training, he defied the odds and began playing complex classical pieces by ear, showcasing a raw talent that left audiences in awe.

Jason’s mother, Leanne Haas, a single parent, beams with pride as she reflects on her son’s journey. “I am extremely proud of Jason’s accomplishments and his ‘Go-getter’ attitude in life,” she shares.

Despite facing challenges and growing up without a father figure, Jason’s resilience and determination have been unwavering. Driven by his passion for music, Jason took the initiative to launch a crowdfunding campaign, aiming to acquire a secondhand baby grand piano but the donations have been very slow to trickle in.

His story caught the attention of the nation when it was featured by Good Things Guy, sparking a wave of support and goodwill.

“Desperate for a piano of his own to practice on, Jason set up a BackaBuddy account to help fund this dream. The Good Things Guy learned of his story and featured him in an article that went viral.” – Drakensberg Boys Choir.

“A Drakensberg Boys Choir family, which came across the article, was deeply moved by his story, passion and dedication to his music and decided that they could help make his dream a reality.”

But all of this was happening without Jason or Leanne knowing.

Megan Dittberner, a Drakensberg Boys Choir School mom, contacted Good Things Guy to ask us to connect them with the family in order for them to gift him the new piano, but the school wanted it to be special, so a plan was set in place.

The Bertacco family, alongside Dragonview Lodge and FLaVR SA, came together to provide Jason with a keyboard, accessories, and a memorable stay at the picturesque Champagne Valley.

The school invited Jason and Leanne to one of their concerts which would take place on the 2nd of March. The Haas family agreed (and were very excited to go). It was their first time visiting the beautiful Champagne Valley and the Drakensberg Boys Choir School. In between the harmonious melodies, Jason was invited to perform alongside the choir, unaware of the extraordinary gift awaiting him.

“It was ABSOLUTELY, NOTHING SHORT OF AMAZING!” Leanne told Good Things Guy.

“I was sobbing throughout Jason’s performance. I was just the proudest mom, in that moment. Seeing my son on that stage, I knew that this was a life-changing experience for him.”

As the concert reached its crescendo, Head Boy Kayden Mulder and Grade 8 chorister Michael Dittberner unveiled the heartfelt surprise – a keyboard, specially gifted to Jason to nurture his musical journey.

The gift from the Drakensberg Boys Choir is absolutely amazing. Jason is very, very thankful. We just want to say THANK YOU to everyone who contributed to this.”

“I am so humbled and thankful to everyone for the generosity and kindness they have shown us. The Drakensberg Boys Choir community, the Bertacco family and the owners, the managers Richard and Julie, and the staff of Dragonview were amazing. Everyone was just amazing”

The Drakensberg Boys Choir School, honoured to be part of Jason’s journey, wishes him a future illuminated by the harmonies of success.

Good Things Guy cannot wait to see this story unfold and we look forward to bringing you more updates about Jason as he continues to inspire with his talent and tenacity.

Thank you, Jason, for reminding us all that dreams can and do come true!

The Midrand SPCA have been going through some of the toughest hardships in the world of animal heroes. So when Tina Nobre’s pizza surprise came knocking, it provided a much-needed reason to smile for the staff!

Midrand, South Africa (27 February 2024) — The SPCA Midrand staff recently got a delicious taste of public appreciation after they were treated to a pizza surprise thanks to a Good Samaritan.

Last week, staff were surprised with a generous score of pizza boxes simply because one Tina Nobre wanted to do something wholesome. Thanks to her pizza surprise, any hint of Monday blues were quickly squashed! Not to mention, the special effort came at just the right time, too, as the SPCA Midrand had experienced harrowing experiences over the past few weeks.

“Our Inspectors have witnessed some of the worst cases of cruelty that they have ever encountered in their 20+ years,” shared the Midrand SPCA of their past few weeks.

But, as is the nature of being an animal hero, the inspector team had to push their broken hearts aside and continue with the very hard work of opening case dockets, attending to cruelty complaints, inspecting homes for adoptions and rescuing strays.

“The Midrand SPCA staff deserve to be spoilt just as much as the animals do. The amount of abuse and absolute heartache they deal with on a daily basis, a little kindness like pizzas goes a long way!” the SPCA added.

Meanwhile in other surprises that made hard times that much easier, the Robin Hood Foundation’s recent Mahala Market was a big hit with the Fairbreeze community who have been subject to brutal flooding, rife unemployment rates and life’s hardships. This market, where essential items were absolutely free for the taking made a big difference!

Two Joburg roads were jam-packed with smiles thanks to simple signs of kindness held up by people on a mission to make Valentine’s Day special for everyone:

Johannesburg, South Africa (15 February 2024) — When it comes to Joburg roads, William Nicole and Republic are known for being traffic hotspots. But on Valentine’s Day morning, they were jam-packed with something a little different to their usual flow—smiles!

From 6:30 am, a team of early ‘love’ birds stood beaming with signs that easily made even the grumpiest motorist’s morning:

“You are needed.”

“You are loved.”

“You are worthy.”

“You are valued.”

“You are you.”

The special signs ignited waving, cheering and great big smiles on those roads as love became a passenger in everyone’s cars. Driving the momentum was community charity One SMALL Act of Kindness—an organisation dedicated to putting the act in impact.

But even more heartwarmingly—and lesser known to those who drove by—the people behind the signs were also people who are not strangers to smiling through the toughest times. Affectionately dubbed the ‘breakfast team’ by OSAOK, the team was comprised of people who usually receive porridge from the charity in the mornings to fill their hungry tummies.

Hoping to spread love and purpose in the same sitting, OSAOK invited the breakfast team to be part of making others smile as a way to remind them of the purpose they can have in the lives of others.

“We gave the guys a purpose to feel like a regular person even just for 2 hours,” OSAOK shared of the special morning, thanking all those who shared in the positive energy.

OSAOK is a charity for everyone, an advocate for the power of purpose—the difference between a ‘hand up’ and a ‘hand out’. By giving the participants a morning to sit in the giver’s seat, the sentiments on the signs echoed even louder.

Jenny Young shared how a kind stranger paid for her and her husband’s lunch while they were running errands; the act of kindness deeply moved her.

South Africa (17 October 2023) – Jenny Young, a retired South African, was left in awe when she learned an anonymous man had paid for her and her husband’s lunch. The random act of kindness moved her to share the details on her blog.

“Yesterday was a busy day. Normally on a Monday night I do a load of washing of towels and bathroom mats and then on Tuesday morning, the bedding and pyjamas. Because we have been away, we had an accumulation of dirty laundry to which we added pillowcases and pyjamas and it was a full two loads. All of it had to be hung on the washing line.

Tuesday is also shopping day and, again because we have been away, it was a bigger shop than usual. It was nearly 2 pm and we were still doing the vegetables when I suggested to my husband that we stop at the restaurant near the fruit and vegetable shop for lunch.”

As the pair were awaiting their pension payments, they split a single toasted sandwich and opted not to have a coffee. They sat chatting about the day and when they were done, asked for their bill.

“A pretty young trainee waitress came to clear our plates and I asked her to organise the bill for us. We waited and waited. Then, when we saw the man who had seated us and taken our order, we asked again for the bill. We know him quite well as we have been going to that restaurant for years and we’ve seen him rise from a junior waiter to the one in control of the floor. He said, “Not today. You can pay next time,” smiled broadly and went away. I thought he was joking.

We really had to get on with the recycling before going home to unpack. We hesitated a bit longer, not certain of what to do. Finally, I called him again. “Are you sure we don’t have to pay?” I asked, “What’s going on?”

“Somebody else paid for you,” he said. “Didn’t you see that man over there?” He pointed to an empty table diagonally behind me. “Didn’t you see he had two bill folds?”

I hadn’t. He had been behind my back. Although my husband had briefly glanced at the man at the table, it was not anybody that we knew.”

Jenny was deeply moved by the act of kindness and was so chuffed that they had been the recipient of a random act of kindness.

“My reactions were mixed. I was dumbfounded. Embarrassed. Grateful. Humbled. Excited. Inspired. It was only a couple of days ago that I read of a coffee shop in Jo’burg where patrons are encouraged to “Pay it Forward.” Now it had happened to me.”

She shared the moment in full via her blog here along with messages of hope and scripture related to kindness and giving. Her experience shows that even the smallest acts of kindness bring untold joy to those who receive them.

The ‘mystery’ behind the treat that made one woman’s 70th birthday that much sweeter will warm your heart and remind you that even the smallest acts of random kindness matter, always:

Cape Town, South Africa (10 October 2023) — The smallest acts of random kindness are some of the most important. A little extra thought and a nudge of extra effort can impact big emotions of positivity—feelings that can go a very long way!

In recent acts of random kindness news, Laura Schultz’s 70th birthday was made that much sweeter (although initially mysteriously) as told by her sister-in-law, Bev Schultz.

As part of one of Laura’s birthday extras, a bouquet of flowers had been arranged. However, when Laura called Bev to say thank you for the gift, she shared particular appreciation for a feature Bev hadn’t included.

The prized gift was a Cadbury’s Topper Bar, but how it joined the bouquet display was something of a mystery to Bev.

Soon, Bev was on the case, armed with her phone and ready to solve the chocolate bar mystery.

Her first point of call was the owner of Flowercraft, whom she knows as a friend. But, as it is with any good mystery, her first ‘suspect’ had been proved wrong, as her friend had not been behind the chocolate surprise and redirected Bev to her manager/arranger.

Similarly, the manager was another solid suspect but it turned out to be a cold lead.

Instead, another stranger had opted to do a little good for the day, as revealed when a message came through for Bev that may as well have read: ‘kindness mystery solved’.

The big reveal? The act of random kindness came from none other than the driver who delivered the flowers, Azile Tshapile.

Azile had gifted Laura the chocolate of his own accord—a surprise he’d actually been given by a previous customer—simply because he thought she looked like a sweet lady and wanted to give her something for her birthday.

When the true culprit of kindness was revealed to Laura, she found out that he was not just delivering her gifts but giving of his own; she made sure to phone Azile to thank him.

Sue Bellwood and her daughter were out enjoying a meal together but when it came time to pay, Sue couldn’t remember her pin; a man paid their bill in an effort of kindness.

Cape Town, South Africa (06 July 2023) – Sue Bellwood and her daughter met a man who paid them a great kindness yesterday, his name is Andre. They were having lunch at a favourite eatery, savouring some of their favourite foods. Sue went to pay the bill but found herself unable to remember the pin code for her card. The more she urged her brain to recall the digits, the more panicked she became and the further away the vital information retreated.

Sue reached out to Good Things Guy to honour Andre’s efforts. She shared that he was so proud to have done an act of kindness. Determined to repay him, she finally managed to get the cash and while he was disappointed his random act of kindness had ended so soon, Sue insisted it would live on for her and her daughter, forever.

This is Sue and Andre’s story in Sue’s words.

“My daughter and I went for lunch to The Lebanese Bakery and Kitchen in town. We have been to the Claremont branch many times and have always enjoyed their warm and friendly staff as well as the great Lebanese mezze. Today we decided to try their new branch on Constitution Street for a quick bite to eat. We enjoyed our simple but, delicious lunch of pitta bread (the best in Cape Town), falafel (the best in Cape Town) and some tasty Lebanese dips. I could go on about this lovely little spot but this is not a restaurant review.

I bought a few items from their bakery to take home as well. When I took out my credit card to pay the bill my menopausal brain went completely blank. For the life of me, I could not recall my credit card pin that I have used almost daily for many years. I tried entering the code three times but to no avail.

By this time I was all hot and sweaty (worse than my usual hot flushes) and starting to panic. How was I going to pay?!! The lovely staff were kind and patient and kept chatting to my daughter while I fumbled with my credit card.

As I was offering to do an EFT, the lovely waiter, Andre took out his bank card and paid the bill for me. I am still stunned by this lovely young man from the Congo who from the kindness of his heart paid our bill.

I thanked Andre profusely and said I would be back with cash. His response was that he could see we were good people and not pulling a scam and that maybe one day someone would do the same for him.

Needless to say, we went straight to an ATM and once I’d calmed down I managed to remember my pin and drew cash to repay Andre.

He seemed quite surprised to see us back at the bakery with the cash a short while later. In a way, he also seemed slightly disappointed when he said to me ‘Now my good deed is no longer.’

I disagree. I will never forget this young man’s kindness. I think my 13-year-old daughter has learned some valuable lessons today.” – Sue Bellwood

Since the passing of 4-year-old Henry Klopper in 2016, his mom Catherine invites people to do random acts of kindness for others, in Henry’s honour.

South Africa (26 June 2023) – A few years ago, Catherine Klopper started a small project to honour her late son, Henry. She decided that by doing small acts of kindness in his name, he could live on in the goodness of others. Henry’s birthday is on the 11th of July and this year would have been his 11th birthday.

When he was 3 years old, Henry was diagnosed with ‘Diffuse intrinsic pontine gliomas’ (DIPG) which are highly aggressive and difficult-to-treat brain tumours found at the base of the brain. Sadly he passed away just weeks after his 4th birthday. The family were devastated but decided to honour his life through random acts of kindness.

Every year, on his birthday, Catherine encourages friends and family to do something small in honour of Henry’s memory. The random acts of kindness are then done throughout July and spread across the internet using the hashtag #FromHenryBear.

“Big or small, it doesn’t matter – please join me in making this world just a little brighter on behalf of a beautiful boy who is loved and missed more than words can explain.” – Catherine Klopper

In the past, kind deeds have always included helping animals, collecting dog food for the family’s much-loved organisation CLAW and sometimes collecting money for the causes too. However, there is no limit on what kind of kindness one wishes to bestow on another person. Your act can be for an organisation or an individual. Just pick your random act of kindness and dedicate it to Henry.

So if you are looking for a way to give back, you can do your charitable work in Henry’s name. If you do, remember to add the hashtag #FromHenryBear so Catherine can see how far and wide Henry’s kindness can travel.

Three McDonald’s employees from the Dowerglen branch went above and beyond to help a man in need this morning; a witness to their kindness caught the moment and shared it with Good Things Guy.

Edenvale, South Africa (04 November 2022) – Michelle Michie Graça was having a coffee across the road from the Dowerglen McDonald’s this morning when she noticed a man walking through the parking lot without a shirt on, in the pouring rain! She wasn’t the only person to see him, three staffers from the McDonald’s rushed out to offer the man some warmth and comfort.

Between the three ladies, they managed to find a shirt to put on the man. They tried to get him indoors but from what Michelle could see, he was insistent on remaining outside. The three ladies chatted with him and before long, one had come back out with a meal and warm drink for him.

Michelle explained that it all happened so fast but the moment absolutely gripped her. She knew that these ladies had acted selflessly and with such conviction, so as to be sure the man wasn’t wandering through the cold another minute longer.

This act of kindness is one of those unseen moments that are performed with genuine care for another human. We are sure none of the staffers realised their kind deed had been witnessed or that it would be so moving.

Michelle, herself is in awe of how kind and gentle each of the ladies was towards the man in need, saying the act absolutely restored her faith in humanity.

“There is still faith in humanity. Things are tough for everyone and yet people will still go out of their way to help others.” – Michelle Michie Graça

Michelle hopes that in sharing this story, these three ladies will be honoured for what they did.

A Capetonian is leaving messages of hope and kindness with one goal in mind… to remind South Africans that they are loved!

Western Cape, South Africa (08 March 2022) – We are all influenced by the things we see every day; our moods, actions and behaviours are affected by the visual world around us. Imagine if that world was filled with hope and kindness? Well, Cape Town is… thanks to one man on a mission!

Dean Duke Biersteker started sharing the “hope signs” at the beginning of Lockdown to remind people that there was a reason to smile even though we were facing tragedy. But the 46-year-old says that the idea actually all started in 2007 when he changed his email signature with a small smile. He wanted to share kindness in his communication.

“The lockdown changed us; it made us all a little sadder. We were less connected, and hardly anyone was greeting each other. So I created a big sign on a bright yellow board and blue text saying: Smile,” Biersteker explains.

The sign was placed in his car, and the proud South African says it made such a positive difference to everyone who saw it while he was driving to the shops.

“The sign worked! People would see it and actually smile.”

That’s when Biersteker started making signs to leave in places. He knew that he wanted people to keep smiling, to keep being happy.

At first, he kept the “Smile” boards, which he placed at major traffic circles in his area.

The wooden signs soon turned into placards. Biersteker says that he now finds places to leave them where they can be seen – stuck to lamp posts, wooden barriers, almost anywhere and everywhere.

“It’s not a simple task; it takes time, but it’s what I enjoy doing, and I see it as part of a service of spreading love and support to my community,” he said.

The messenger of hope says the most beautiful thing about the project is that even though the signs are random, they were never really given out randomly.

“They were all taken by whoever needed the messages written on them.”

The #KindActsBigImpact campaign aims to shine a spotlight on the power of kindness and how small acts of compassion can change people’s lives for the better.

Johannesburg, South Africa (17 February 2022) – In celebration of Random Acts of Kindness Day (RAK Day) on 17 February, Meta (formerly Facebook) has launched an inspiring campaign called #KindActsBigImpact in partnership with media publication Good Things Guy.

The campaign aims to shine a spotlight on the power of kindness and how small acts of compassion can change people’s lives for the better.

Started by non-profit organisation The Random Acts of Kindness Foundation, RAK Day inspires people to be kind to each other, simply for the sake of spreading kindness. The foundation’s mission is to make kindness the norm, investing resources into connecting individuals through kindness and teaching kindness in schools, workplaces, and homes around the world.

Social media platforms are perfectly positioned to spread joy, kindness, and positivity. In fact, Meta’s technologies have always been about connecting people. Right now, people are relying on technology more than ever to stay connected and share experiences with their friends, family and communities. As people start to physically reconnect, many of these new forms of connection will remain in place, making people more connected than before.

“Through the #KindActsBigImpact campaign, we want to inspire South Africans to use technologies like ours to foster community, spread kindness online and share their stories to encourage others to do the same,” explains Itumeleng Morule, Corporate Communications Associate Manager, SADC at Meta.

“Now more than ever, the world desperately needs more kindness. Whether it’s a heartfelt compliment on a friend’s Facebook or Instagram post or starting a WhatsApp health and wellness support group. We hope people feel inspired to be kind online and offline – not only on RAK Day but every day,” adds Morule.

Brent Lindeque, founder of Good Things Guy adds that “A day like today is so important, especially now. It serves as a reminder to just be kind. The last two years have been long, incredibly tough, and everyone’s pretty tired. Plus, we rarely open up about what we’re really going through. Everyone is fighting in a fight club you know nothing about… because we don’t talk about fight club. And even though you cannot be responsible for someone else’s feelings, perspective on life or self-esteem, do not contribute to their struggle. We rise by lifting others. And we do that with kindness, so I hope you use today to be kinder, love louder and share only good things.”

As you will remember Good Things Guy was created by an act of kindness on social media.

Submit your own #KindActsBigImpact story here, and you could be featured on the Good Things Guy’s platforms.

Be sure to detail how you used the Meta technologies (Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp) to show an act of kindness, and use the official hashtag (#KindActsBigImpact) when sharing to encourage others to submit their stories too.
