South Africa has some incredible rolling thunderstorms in Summer, but thunder is powerful worldwide; the Stellenbosch University Choir performed a song inspired by thunder that left us in awe!
Stellenbosch, South Africa (07 February 2024) – The Stellenbosch University Choir recently added a little thunder to their musical repertoire. The ensemble performed a Latvian Folk Legend composed by Laura Jekabsone which highlights the story of Father Thunder and his nine sons.
Conducted by André van der Merwe, the choir uses their voices to add rain sounds and the power of rolling thunder to the composition. As always, the ensemble left us covered in goosebumps!
The Stellenbosch University Choir was founded in 1936 under the baton of William Morris. After him, various conductors established the ensemble as an influential South African choir.
The choir, an ensemble of approximately 80 – 100 voices, has won international acclaim through performances, concert tours, and participation in prestigious festivals and competitions.
And only a few of the students in the group actually study music!
The University choir is one of the most celebrated choirs in South Africa including various awards from around the world.
