In incredible international news, a widow who was left a fortune has decided to donate $1 billion dollars to fund medical students’ tuition! Full story:

New York City, USA (29 February 2024) — It’s not every day that a widow receives a billionaire’s fortune. But it’s even rarer to learn that she would make the decision to donate $1 billion (over 19 billion rand) to fund medical students’ tuition. Well, in a literal wealth of good news from New York City, this is exactly what happened thanks to Dr Ruth Gottesman.

Ruth Gottesman is the widow of David ‘Sandy’ Gottesman—a billionaire who made a big part of his fortune by investing in Bershire Hathaway Inc. It is believed that this saw him quietly reach a net worth of around $3 billion in his lifetime.

When David passed away, his wife of over seven decades was reportedly left with the stock David had and instructions.

“Do whatever you think is right with it,” the instructions said as per Forbes.

93-year-old Ruth got to thinking about what she could do and found the answer in her roots. Ruth is a former professor of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, based in New York City’s Bronx. Knowing the institution and its student’s challenges well; Ruth returned to her old professional stomping ground with a once-in-a-lifetime gift: a donation that would change the futures of students in a way that has never been seen before in the United States medical school history. Ruth decided to donate the $1 billion so that medical students would have their college tuition covered. Historically, tuition at the college will now be free; and no student will have to pay tuition costs in the future either! Not to mention, all spring tuition will be reimbursed, as the college shared.

“I am profoundly grateful to Dr. Gottesman for this historic and transformational gift. I believe we can change healthcare history when we recognize that access is the path to excellence. With this gift, Dr. Gottesman will fund excellence in perpetuity and secure our foundational mission of advancing human health,” said Philip O. Ozuah, M.D., Ph.D., President and CEO of Montefiore Einstein.

Dr Gottesman has only added to her legacy of impact with this gift. While she was working at Einstein’s Children’s Evaluation and Rehabilitation Centre, she was a huge force in developing screening and help for children with learning problems. In the ’90s, she began the Adult Literacy Programme and continued her work in treating learning disabilities and, alongside David, created an institution for stem cell research.

After a motorcyclist found himself in an accident, a Good Samaritan chose not to look on, but to step in and become a friend. Shereen went above and beyond to make sure this stranger would get home safely to his daughters and made all the difference when it mattered most:

Gauteng, South Africa (17 January 2024) — Thanks to Shereen Michelle Hunter, an unfortunate situation turned for the better (and safer) after a motorcyclist found himself in an accident without a friend nearby — or so he thought.

Despite not knowing Ryk Buys from a bar of soap, Shereen was determined that the motorcyclist would not stay alone of the side of the highway after an incident like that and stepped up as a friend.

Shereen made sure there was someone (her) to talk to the police and the paramedics. To sign the documents and make the process as smooth as possible. As anyone who has ever been in an accident knows, it’s a traumatic time as is. And a little help from a friend goes a long way.

“They asked who I was and I said that I was Ryk’s friend (he looked shocked but just smiled and just let me sign for him…that’s what friends do right?”—Shereen.

But, Shereen didn’t stop at the paperwork. She also knew that no one should be left alone in this state, and opted to get Ryk to safety.

“Cops didn’t know me, Paramedics didn’t know me, Ryk didn’t know me…he just got in my car after I told him I’m not letting [him] get back on his own bike…I’m sure he was thinking “who the heck is this woman!?” she shared of the moment.

While stranger danger is a real thing, Shereen’s ‘kidnapping for kindness’ moment would later mean that Ryk could contact his family from a safe space—her own home—while making sure his bike would also be taken care of.

Thanks to a man referred to as Lionel from the Christian Biker Association and Shereen, Ryk’s bike along with its driver did not lay at the mercy of highway onlookers, but got to her house safely

“Today he did not have to phone them whilst laying on the side of the highway with cars passing by and his bike being stolen hoping someone will call police or an ambulance. Because that is what happens, A lot of people see an accident and they don’t stop and they don’t help,” she said.

Despite her own household’s shock to see a bleeding man walk the front door with her and the later array of biker friends who would come by to help the motorcyclist (who no doubt added to the household’s surprises), a father got to get back home safely.

“My heart is full,” the Good Samaritan concluded. As are ours!

If you’re wondering why everyone is talking about Belgian shot putter Jolien Boumkwo, there’s an incredible story of the best kind of sportsmanship waiting for you!

Though it wasn’t her field of expertise, Boumkwo stepped in to ensure her team wouldn’t get disqualified. Here’s the full story!

Poland (29 June 2023) — Jolien Boumkwo rose to unexpected fame recently for all the right reasons. What began as the Belgian shot-putter doing her part to ensure her team got their chance to shine, soon spiralled into a showcase moment of sportsmanship and stepping in when it counts the most (even if you’re not prepared).

During the recent European Athletics Team Championships, Boumkwo found herself becoming the personification of ‘I’ve got my team’s back no matter what’. At the last minute, her team risked disqualification due to injured hurdlers. Not prepared to see their hard work go to waste, Boumkwo volunteered as tribute, opting to hop to task and tackle the 100-metre hurdle race in the experts’ absence.

Though shot put and hurdles both fall under athletics, they’re easily worlds apart. Still, Boumkwo—a 12-time national shot put champion in her country—outshone all the hurdles pros, purely because of her intention.

“I was like: it would be a pity if just we would lose by one point so I will just take this on my account and just go for it and enjoy every moment,”— Jolien Boumkwo speaking with CNN.

Being slower or less experienced in the field hardly mattered. The joyful Boumkwo was the crowd favourite by far, reminding people around the world what sportsmanship looks like and why it matters so much even at the highest sporting levels.
