Growing up, one can remember spending birthdays at Spur and getting a birthday song; this team really made this birthday song epic.

Kuils River, South Africa (05 March 2024) – The waiters at the Zevenwacht Spur put on a great performance for someone’s birthday and it is going viral, even now, 10 weeks after it was originally shared.

Sherri Andreas captured the moment while at the restaurant chain and it has left many South Africans reminiscing on the days they got to experience their own birthdays at the franchise. We all have the ear-worm “I don’t know what I’ve been told, but superboy/girl is getting old – don’t you worry, don’t you fear – it only happens once a year! Yo, yo, yo… yeah, yeah, yeah”, living in our brains, just waiting to be reawakened – sorry!

There are actually a few variations of birthday songs from over the past few decades (share your favourite in the comment section).

This new variation is lively and brings all the joy. People have shared that this isn’t a rare performance either, the talented waiteress is known throughout the community for going the extra mile when celebrating a patron’s birthday.

“I totally agree!!!It was my son birthday, and she made his day with her dance moves.,a day he will never forgetšŸ’ÆšŸ’ƒšŸ¼šŸ˜˜spur in Zevenwachtā€™s mall rocks” – @zasjewellery

“Have been there the staff there really love their job. They literally do this to everybody” – @sibusisomakhuvele_

Others said the video gave them the feel-good vibes!

“Give her a huge raise..she deserves it..I felt that vibe just watching the video” – @a_mi01

“Aaah man, I felt like getting into my screen to also clap hands” – @jaffer_enos

Take a look at the birthday performance below:

Maybe the internet needed to be reminded that life isn’t always so serious, or maybe the energy of these students was just infectiously joyful. Whatever the main reason, a singing prank in a Stellenbosch lecture hall has gone beyond viral with almost 30 million views!

Stellenbosch, South Africa (01 March 2024)ā€”Being a university student means living in the weird space between serious adulthood and laidback youth. Some days, it feels like your whole life is dependent on one assignment. Other days, you might be at the height of feeling young and invincible. But fun should lie in the mix of it all, as should stepping outside of your comfort zone, which is exactly what students at Stellenbosch University got up to thanks to a singing prank that skyrocketed past virality at 28.4 million views and 3.9 million likes.

Maybe the internet needed to be reminded that life isn’t always so serious, or maybe the energy of these students was just so unanimously and infectiously joyful. Whatever the exact reason, a clip of students giving their lecture a High School Musical twist has captured social media users after this rendition of ‘We Are Young’ made people smile.

Watch: Singing Prank in Stellies Unites Students

@timmorrel Ending was worth itšŸ„° #university #lectures #college #CapCut ā™¬ original sound – Tim

Shared by TikTok creator Tim Morrel, the clip captured bravery, fun and unity through doing something you have to have a lot of guts to do. Students’ mental health at tertiary levels is known to be a cause for concern; with anxiety and depression sadly impacting so many young people’s journeys through higher education. What was awesome about the clip was not just the singing and joy, but that the whole cohort of students joined in; which means even the anxious, those who feel alone, and those who never considered that they could make others smile simply through a little silliness.

Yes lecture halls are a place of learning, but they should also be a place where students can unite and even learn a few lessons outside of the curriculumā€”like this lesson in being bold!

Take a look at the ‘Wizarding World of South Africa’ as cooked up by the magic of Artificial Intelligence!

Global (26 February 2024)ā€”You’ve probably never heard of the Wizarding World of South Africa before, largely because it doesn’t exist. Well, up until now. At least, in the world of digital creation.

Thanks to a social media content creator curious enough to ask their AI what the Wizarding World of South Africa might look like, we have an inclination. Yes, the images aren’t real in the sense that they weren’t taken by a person who found the local version of Hogwarts and decided to snap up a shoot (at least, not that we know of). But, that’s really what AI image prompts are all aboutā€”making us think beyond what’s possible.

As has become a popular trend on social media platforms, those who have access to image generating AI magic are in the business of creating visuals through a series of prompts or tasks. We’ve seen South Africa visualised in many different and sometimes hilarious ways (AI even outed all of our true lifestyles once). But every so often, an AI showcase about South Africa will come across our social media pages and tickle our curiosity with its unique take!

The Wizarding World of South Africa already sounds like the kind of place many of us would want to be. Except maybe without the local version of Voldemort. According to Moon Sauce’s AI, we’d have an all-too-perfect Patronus, some very serious-looking villains, a Quidditch field worth taking all the hits for and a very patriotic mystical beast. Not to mention a happy ending and a few other magical essentials up our sleeves.

The South African Quidditch Coach

If you’re a Harry Potter fan who’s still waiting for your owl to deliver your letter to Hogwarts in the mail, you might appreciate seeing some favoured features from the epic Potter stories sprinkled with some Mzansi magic.

You can watch the Wizarding World of South Africa here!

A pleasingly muted burble of exhausts (not unlike the low F-sharp of a trumpet); the whine of straight-cut gears; and (if youā€™re close) the tickety-tick of SU fuel pumps. Just some of the sounds set to tickle ears in KZNā€™s Central Drakensberg when fans of a much-loved British motorcar gather. Matthew Hattingh reports:

KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa (20 February 2024) – Morris Minor enthusiasts enjoy a knees-up as much as the next fellow and Terry Wilson is no exception.

The 76-year-old Gqeberha (formerly Port Elizabeth) man has been to all but one Morris Minor Owners Club of South Africa national rally since 2000. So you may well imagine how a recent fall that tore the quad muscles from his knees and left him house-bound for six weeks ahead of the clubā€™s biennial get-together had him rattled.

ā€œI nearly went crackers,ā€ says Wilson.

The Cotswold resident tells how he slipped while out walking the dogs. The pain was excruciating. ā€œI just saw white lights,ā€ he says, recalling how he lay in the mud for more than half an hour before someone found him and came to his aid.

The retired Telkom project manager turned part-time mechanic and tour guide (he shows cruise liner tourists the local sights and game parks) is on the mend now.

Terry Wilson on the day he acquired Chris Spinksā€™ Morris Minor Traveller. Note the EC number plate already fitted ahead of the journey from Johannesburg to its new home in PE.

Trouble is, the rally looms.

The get-together, the 21st edition, runs from 17 to 21 March at the Nest Hotel in KwaZulu-Natalā€™s Central Drakensberg and Wilson still canā€™t bend his knees beyond about 80 degrees. That makes getting into and out of the relatively tight confines of his Morris hell, never mind enduring two long days at the wheel that the drive to the Drakensberg entails.

But you canā€™t keep a good man down.

Wilson says heā€™s been doing plenty of exercises to speed his recovery and has put a backup plan in place: he says heā€™ll hitch his wagon ā€“ his Morris is a Traveller, one of the sought after station wagon variants, colloquially known as Woodies ā€“ behind his bakkie. With the extra space the bakkieā€™s modern cab affords, Wilson is confident he can make it to the mountains, accompanied by his girlfriend, Jo Robberts.

The couple havenā€™t quite decided on their route, but are leaning towards travelling by way of Nqanqarhu (Maclear) and Matatiele, depending on road conditions, before pressing on to Underberg.

Itā€™s a fair old drive, but leaving aside Wilsonā€™s injuries, pales beside the many miles facing Western Cape rally-goers.

Frikkie Muller, 72, of Kuilsrivier, will be setting off at 4am with a friend, Emma Carpenter, in her Trafalgar Blue, concours-winning 1969 two-door Morris.

Joining them in convoy will be John and Pat Birkett, in a red Nissan 1400-powered 1959 Traveller, and Ron Clark and Mitford Roberts in a black 1959 two-door.

They plan to meet Oudsthoorn Morris man, Nico Mienie and his wife Alicia, en route and to overnight in Bloemfontein, where they are hoping to persuade Free State members to join them for the final leg to KZN.

There must be something about these not-so-young men and women and, dare we risk the clichƩ, their magnificent machines, because Muller betrayed not a hint of anxiety about the trek when we spoke recently.

Certainly heā€™s not fazed by the possibility of a breakdown. He counts seven Morris Minors in his own backyard in different states of readiness and restoration, including a panel van and a Traveller.

The cars are reliable and easy to work on, says the retired technical school teacher, who tells me he cut his teeth as an apprentice mechanic repairing Land Rovers ā€“ ā€œhorrible to work onā€ ā€“ and other British cars.

OK, so breakdowns arenā€™t necessarily a big worry, still, wonā€™t driving all that way in a car from an era when ergonomics was in its infancy take the wind from your sails? Consider too that many of the rally-goers are older than their cars.

Not a bit of it, says Tommy Smith, 67, a founder member of the Johannesburg Morris Minor Club.
He rates Morris Minors, ā€œpretty comfortableā€.

ā€œI have no problem driving 1000km a day,ā€ says Smith, who with his brother JosĆ©, will be bringing a 1971 Traveller and a recently restored 1960 bakkie to the rally from Alberton.

Morris
Johannesburg Morris Minor Owners Club stalwart Tommy Smith with one of his bakkies.

The retired diesel mechanic turned health and safety auditor, says that with modern oils and regular servicing (note: no-antifreeze), the Morris A-Series engine is ā€œbullet-proofā€. Nevertheless, heā€™s careful to pack a spare fuel pump ā€“ ā€œIā€™ve been around the block.ā€

Smith says they do about 55mph (85/90km/h) on the highway which means they get to enjoy the scenery ā€“ something drivers of modern, swifter machinery miss out on.

ā€œI just enjoy driving them,ā€ he says of his cars.

Chris Spinks, of Highlands North, Johannesburg, has been attending Morris Minor rallies since 1994, when the Durban club hosted the event at Hibberdene, on the KZN South Coast.

The 83-year-old will join the rally in his ā€™61 Porcelain Green (ā€œthe family call it ā€˜gangreneā€™ā€) ā€“ four-door Morris 1000. Spinks has owned the car for 30 years. ā€œItā€™s still going strong; hopefully it outlasts me.ā€

Chris Spinksā€™ four-door Morris Minor at a shopping mall in Bloemfontein during the 2016 MMOC National Rally. Thankfully it didn’t leak oil, like some others did, says Spinks.

As it happens, he previously owned Wilsonā€™s car until the PE man browbeat him into parting with it.

Spinks will be making the trip solo, albeit in convoy with other club members. His wifeā€™s not interested, he tells me cheerfully.

ONE FOR THE AGES: Chris Spinks; grandson Talon, aged three at the time, in Spinksā€™ then newly restored Traveller. The car now belongs to Terry Wilson of Port Elizabeth, while Talon is a lanky teenager in Perth, Australia.

Like Smith he has no qualms about the cars themselves provided they are properly serviced and, for the sake of comfort, ā€œmake sure the seats are in reasonable conditionā€. But he says sharing the road with heavy trucks on the N3 can take some of the shine out of the trip.

Spinks counsels regular breaks every two hours to stay fresh; ā€œbut not every time you pass something interestingā€¦ or you tend to find the day passes and you donā€™t get very far.ā€

The ā€œhappily retiredā€ mining surveyor looks forward to the camaraderie, catching up with old friends from across the country and meeting people.

Smith also mentions camaraderie.

Heā€™s attended ā€œ18 or 19ā€ rallies over the years and says meeting members from across the country can be like a reunion with ā€œlong-lost familyā€.

Call it bias if you must, but Morris Minor enthusiasts insist thereā€™s something about their cars and those who drive them thatā€™s, well, fun.

Or as Muller puts it: Other car clubs (he mentions the devotees of a number of other venerable British marquesā€¦ and we shall say nothing here of BMWs) can be a little snooty, but ā€œwe are outgoing and friendlyā€.
It helps too that so many of the public have such fond memories of Morris Minors.

ā€œIf I stop with my car at the service station,ā€ he says, ā€œpeople come and tell me, ā€˜My mother had a Morris like thatā€™ or ā€˜I did my driverā€™s licence in oneā€™.ā€

The car was really the first affordable, well-handling and reliable British car to emerge in the post-war years, so inevitably found its way onto thousands of driveways in South Africaā€¦ and into countless hearts.

Then thereā€™s its ā€œsmiling faceā€ and ā€œyou can get it in a bakkie and a van and a convertibleā€, Muller says, referring to the radiator grill and headlights that give the different Morris Minor variants their cheerful aspect. ā€ØWilson says itā€™s down to the ā€œpeople who have Morris Minorsā€¦ you all have the same illness. Anyone who has an old car has something wrong with them. They have a screw loose.ā€

Apart from the people, loose screws or otherwise, Spinks says he enjoys tackling the driverā€™s skills tests and trials that are very much part of the rally.

A busy programme has been planned for the event, including car displays, boot sales, braais, a fancy dress, fun runs, an outing to Spionkop lodge and an optional visit to the Drakensberg Boysā€™ Choir.

Perhaps the highlight is the Concours d’Ɖtat, on Monday 18 March. Itā€™s a beauty pageant for cars, but one where judges concern themselves not only with the outward beauty of their subjects, but poke about beneath the bonnet and under the floorboards. They check to see everything is in tip-top shape and that all parts are authentic. Is that a modern fuel pump, I see? Lose a point. Are those nuts stainlessā€¦?

There are also categories for modified cars where the judges take a more relaxed view of these things.
Stewart Boik, of rally organisers, the Durban Morris Minor Owners Club, says the public are welcome to attend and can expect to see some fine examples of the breed. These include ā€œhalf-timberedā€ Travellers and rare, open-top Tourers ā€“ just the thing for a spot of leisurely wind-in-the hair motoring.

Or perhaps you already have a Morris or know of one tucked away somewhere that you might borrow or buy. Although entries for the rally have officially closed, Boik says they will ā€œmake a planā€ to accommodate latecomers.

To find out moreĀ email mmocdurban@gmail.com.

Morris Morris

Note about the writer: Matthew Hattingh is a freelance journalist. He hopes to take his own Morris Minor to the rallyā€¦ if he can get the gearbox back in the car in time.

Good luck Matthew! We hope you get your chance to join in!

AI is at it again, and this time, it’s showing people what an ‘Average Day’ in South Africa looks like. They might just be onto us!

South Africa (05 February 2024)ā€”If you’re on the internet often, you’re probably no stranger to the weird (and sometimes wonderful) creations Artificial Intelligence can cook up. From Cape Town’s Avengers to South Africa as a villain, we’ve seen it all. But another recent batch of visuals depicting an ‘Average Day’ in South Africa has us giggling in high notes for its…’accuracy’.

According to the visual story created by ‘AI TRƄSKET’, an ‘average day’ in SA is filled with playing sports, finding treasure and, of course, having an adorable sidekick alongside you for every part of your journey. (No, it’s not a Springbok). We also apparently get very rich, very quickly. There are no shops around us either in the open planes of wildlife we call home, except for one: a Ferrari dealership. Obviously.

Watch: AI Shows People an ‘Average Day’ in South Africa on TikTok.

The video has sparked many giggles from its 2.1 million views for reasons that need little explanation. But, in true South African humour, many locals played along without hesitation.

Here are some of the comments:

“My Meerkat and I found a diamond yesterday.”ā€”Gary Shell.Ā

“Finally, accurate South African representation!!”ā€”Omfile.

“I’m saving my gold chunk for a rainy day.”ā€”Brandon Wessels.

“Anyone want to exchange meerkats? I think mine is broken?”ā€”Kgopolo Mphuthi on her meerkat not leading her to excessive amounts of gold.

“My elephant is too lazy to carry anything, he spends his day getting drunk on Amarula.”ā€”IsabellĆ©

“Yes this is true. I unfortunately don’t have an elephant cause you need a license but I’ll get one soon,”ā€”@fofo.Ā

“My meerkat doesn’t want to play rugby with me :(“ā€”Nthati.Ā

We’re not sure which South Africans actually identify with this ‘average day’, but if you’re out there, we need to see you and your meerkat urgently.

A 6-year-old girl named Jagger has believed (adorably) for the span of her life that the Maroon 5 hit ‘Moves Like Jagger’ was written for her. She still does. As the stars prepare for their South African shows, her family are hoping to do more than just take her to see ‘her’ song performed live, but put Jagger’s trip to the concert, on Maroon 5’s radar!

Durban, South Africa (31 January 2024) ā€” A handful of years ago, Alex and Justin welcomed their first child into the world. They named her Jagger.

For just over the six years since she was born, Maroon 5’s 2011 smash-hit ‘Moves Like Jagger’ has been a favourite serenade that Jagger’s parents have performed for her time and time again. Of course, the little girl has believed for the span of her life that Maroon 5 wrote the song just for her.

According to her aunt Lusanda:

“She legitimately thinks Maroon 5 wrote the song for her (as one does at 6-years-old).”

So, with Maroon 5 getting ready to perform in South Africa, the perfect opportunity for Jagger to see the ‘band she inspired’ live came about.

“We have managed to come together and get them all flights, tickets in a child-safe area but close to the stage, accommodation and everything in Cape Townā€”so that they can go and watch Maroon 5 sing ‘her’ song to her.

“She even has a T-shirt that says ‘I am Jagger’,” adds Lusanda.

Lusanda’s big wish for her niece and the family is to get Jagger’s story on as many radars as possible and grab as much attention so that Maroon 5 might just come across Jagger, learn that she will be at the Cape Town concert, and hear of her sweet bond with them.

“If we do come right I don’t think any other 6-year-old on the planet is ever going to be more excited in their livesā€”EVER,” Lusanda adds.

South Africans, can we make it go viral and help this dream happen?

Faf and MinĆ© de Klerk made sure their soon-to-be baby bok got an especially South African baby shower! While the baby’s gender hasn’t been revealed, one thing is for certain: this will be a proudly South African tot:

South Africa (29 January 2024) ā€” Faf de Klerk and his wife MinĆ© shared snaps of Baba de Klerk’s baby shower, and the South African touch left locals and Springboks fans nodding in approval.

While most baby showers might go for pastel colours, baba de Klerk (who will be the rugby royalty family’s firstborn) got bright splashes of green and gold balloons. Since proud locals consider our blood to be green and gold (whether rugby fans, expats, everyday heroes or local is lekker enthusiasts), it gave the baby shower a super special South African feel. This might be the start of a trend that we’d love to see!

It couldn’t be more fitting for the family, especially considering that Faf has shared his love for South Africa both in unconventional but iconic ways (wearing our flag in speedo form for any occasion) and by virtue of being the legendary scrum-half who helped us win the World Cup more than once.

While the gender of the baby bok hasn’t yet been confirmed (the pregnancy itself was only revealed earlier this month) one thing is certain: this will be a proudly South African tot!

Meanwhile in other news of Springboks legends welcoming extensions to their families, Analina and Eben Etzebeth welcomed their baby boy into the world on 16 January 2024.

Other South African sweethearts expecting include former Miss World Rolene Strauss, whose baby gender reveal didn’t go quite as expected, but was filled with joy nonetheless:

If you have kids and enough paper bags from the grocery store to build a small house, this South African Mom’s viral upcycling hack was meant to find you!

South Africa (28 January 2024) ā€” A South African mom (who also happens to be award-winning broadcaster Lebang Kgosana) has made upcycling go viral after she gave grocery store paper bags a second chance at life in the most practical way.

Many South Africans know ‘the drawer’ā€”AKA, the home of all the bags you say you’ll reuse but almost always forget to. Whether they’re material or paper, these bags often build up to the point where it wouldn’t be unreasonable to build a small house from them.

Beyond the discipline that is the art of reusing these bags lies another great idea: upcycling!

This is exactly what Lebang did when wrapping her children’s books for the school year, and with over 6.1 million views on TikTok, it’s safe to say that her idea caught the internet’s attention.

Taking bags that have made many a local smile in times of hunger before, mama Lebang gave the full run down on how to wrap the books neatly, while serving the purpose of reusable paper bags.

@lebangkgosana My online grocery shopping bags being recycled as we cover some school books!! #BackToSchool #fyp ā™¬ original sound – #LifeWithLebang

While some users had reservations surrounding how ‘aesthetic’ the books looked, others defended it, noting that there is a lesson covering those pages: being resourceful and mindful of materials that are meant to be re-used.

Some even nodded that they’d take the tip for their university notebooks, while teachers also agreed that the idea was one that needed to go further.

Even if you don’t have notebooks that need covering, a mindset that sees one product as potential for another is something makes a shift in our efforts for the Earth.

Meanwhile, if you know a South African sustainable thinker like this creator, you can nominate them for these upcoming sustainability awards!Ā

A spirited South African cricket fan has gained viral fame at Newlands, Cape Town, for her entertaining double drink-down captured on the “audience cam,” sparking a lighthearted international debate.

Western Cape, South Africa (23 January 2024) – A South African cricket fan has stolen the spotlight at Newlands, Cape Town, for her impressive and entertaining antics during a recent game.

Caught on the “audience cam,” this young lady’s unexpected double drink-down has become the talk of the town, showcasing the infectious spirit and humour of South African cricket fans.

The video captured the moment when the camera focused on her, and without hesitation, she swiftly downed her drink, much to the delight of the onlookers. However, the true magic happened a little while later when the camera revisited her spot. Undeterred by the attention, she playfully seized a drink from the neighbouring gentleman and repeated her feat, leaving the audience in splits.

The video has since gone viral, drawing attention to her spirited performance and sparking a humorous debate in the comment section. Some viewers amusingly claimed she might be Australian or Canadian, attempting to share this viral sensation’s glory. However, South Africans were quick to set the record straight.

One commenter hilariously remarked, “I know a Canadian girl when I see one!” while another playfully quipped, “Things don’t get more Australian than this šŸ˜‚.” The comment section further erupted with laughter as individuals from both Canada and Australia enthusiastically claimed her as their own, prompting a proud response from South Africans defending their compatriots.

“Why does everyone think she’s Aussie šŸ˜‚ that’s an iconic Saffa girl right there šŸ˜ŒšŸ˜‚,” exclaimed one supporter, emphasising the unmistakable South African flair on display. Another commenter light-heartedly addressed the cultural confusion, stating, “These comments haibo. Now we must explain South Africa and Cricket šŸ˜‚.”

The highlight of the footage, according to many, was the moment she boldly snatched the man’s beer with unapologetic confidence.

Comments flooded in, with one fan declaring, “This… This is how legends are made!!! She knew the assignment!!”

The overwhelming response from the online community echoed a sentiment of admiration, with phrases like “Champion šŸ’ŖšŸ†šŸ‘šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚” emphasizing the collective appreciation for her spontaneous and entertaining act.

While some good-natured banter ensued between the Australians and Canadians in the comment section, it was abundantly clear that this round belonged to the spirited South African cricket fan who, with a double drink-down, has become a viral legend.

Sorry Australia and Canada, but this time, South Africa takes the win ā€“ not once, but twice!

Cheers to the infectious spirit of cricket fans and the unexpected moments that make the game even more enjoyable for all.

Trevor Noah’s Advert Showing Off South Africa has got some stiff competition for views. While the famous comedian depicted the SA that can experienced with moola, Sammy Hall shows us the SA that can be experienced mahala. Take a look:

Somewhere in South Africa (16 January 2024) ā€” Almost two months ago, Trevor Noah made an advert highlighting all the awesome things South Africa has to offer. Trevor Noah’s advert may have been made with a tourism boost in mind, but it also got many locals eager to explore our own country inspired by the legendary comedian’s top-tier humour.

But, some South Africans were encouraged to take showing our foreign friends around one step further, given that, Trevor Noah’s advert isn’t exactly budget-friendly.

Cue TikTokker Sami Hall, who decided to give us all a hilarious response to the comedian’s take with her Rand-Friendly version of the original (read,’ South Africa for Broke Bitches’).

Where Trevor showcases our brilliant beaches, Sami offers her own recommendations for cooling down in the heat for those who can’t afford beach trips.

For those seeking a budget alternative to the five-star hotels Trevor mentions, Sami’s got her own plan of action (and yes, you’ll need Mozzi repellent).

And when it comes to meeting the ‘lions’ of South Africa, the content creator’s very clever suggestion is sure to give you a giggle.

As Sami’s video reminded us (and the other 100,000 people who watched it), South Africa is still a blast even on budget because of the one thing inflation can never take away from usā€”our humour.
