Trevor Noah’s Advert Showing Off South Africa has got some stiff competition for views. While the famous comedian depicted the SA that can experienced with moola, Sammy Hall shows us the SA that can be experienced mahala. Take a look:

Somewhere in South Africa (16 January 2024) — Almost two months ago, Trevor Noah made an advert highlighting all the awesome things South Africa has to offer. Trevor Noah’s advert may have been made with a tourism boost in mind, but it also got many locals eager to explore our own country inspired by the legendary comedian’s top-tier humour.

But, some South Africans were encouraged to take showing our foreign friends around one step further, given that, Trevor Noah’s advert isn’t exactly budget-friendly.

Cue TikTokker Sami Hall, who decided to give us all a hilarious response to the comedian’s take with her Rand-Friendly version of the original (read,’ South Africa for Broke Bitches’).

Where Trevor showcases our brilliant beaches, Sami offers her own recommendations for cooling down in the heat for those who can’t afford beach trips.

For those seeking a budget alternative to the five-star hotels Trevor mentions, Sami’s got her own plan of action (and yes, you’ll need Mozzi repellent).

And when it comes to meeting the ‘lions’ of South Africa, the content creator’s very clever suggestion is sure to give you a giggle.

As Sami’s video reminded us (and the other 100,000 people who watched it), South Africa is still a blast even on budget because of the one thing inflation can never take away from us—our humour.

Watch: Rand-Friendly South Africa!

If you’ve seen the Roman Empire Trend, you need to see the former Springboks’ responses! If you aren’t in the loop, here’s what’s going on:

Global (21 September 2023) — The Roman Empire trend has catapulted TikTok into a whole new spiral of questions, laughs and conspiracy theories, not unlike the Girl Math and Girl Dinner trends.

In case you haven’t seen it yet, the Roman Empire trend essentially encourages people to ask the men in their lives how often they think about the Roman Empire, resulting in unexpected frequencies.

@ambarrail This trend is incredible. Some of the best ones #romanempire #romanempirecompilation ♬ original sound – ambarrai

The trend quickly went viral after the responses (to the surprise of millions) saw many men share that they think about the Roman Empire fairly frequently, with answers ranging from monthly to a few times a week and even daily. As such, it’s had the internet relishing in all kinds of curiosity as to what else we might not know about the inner workings of some men’s minds and which topics are seemingly, of enough importance that they’re mentally recurring.

The stance of those answering is giggle-worthy (at least, if you’re not someone who revisits this chapter of history regularly) because of their energy that almost feels as though we’ve all found out a great secret.

But, the best responses by far come from none other than former Springboks, Bryan  Habana, Jean De Villiers and Schalk Burger.

In response to a Rugby World Cup interview segue, the three ex-Springboks were naturally asked how much they think of the Roman Empire, and their answers were priceless.

Whether masculinity and its connection to the Roman Empire trend hasn’t yet been fully explored, our Boks are the hilarious outliers whose honesty can’t be faulted.

‘Loadshedding’ and ‘helpful’ in the same sentence? Local parents shared how ‘lights out’ gave them the ultimate parenting hack, and anyone with a restless child will understand.

South Africa (20 July, 2023) — It’s not often that we see ‘loadshedding’ and ‘helpful’ in the same sentence. At least, not in direct relation to one another. However, local parents have found the silver lining to a lifestyle led by loadshedding, and the result is the ultimate parenting hack.

Taking to South African Reddit, user u/ToastCPT started a conversation. ‘Loadshedding has helped me parent,’ they began, and all ears immediately perked up.

Despite having an inverter, this user explained that they step into Eskom’s shoes and take on the role of enforcing ‘lights out’ to combat temper tantrums before bed. Switching off the TV and turning off the lights secretly, this parent blames the dark on loadshedding so that their toddlers have no choice but to go to bed.

Diabolical? A mastermind? Soon other parents confessed that they do the same thing.

“I confess. I use this method without shame,” wrote another parent.

“I’ve always wondered what it’s like for kids growing up and thinking that load shedding is normal. Now I know,” another laughed.

Another user shared that in their house, lights and devices off help their toddler accept bedtime because of the lack of stimulation and FOMO.

Another day, another way 21st-century parents in South Africa are life-hacking their way through the system hilariously.

After Twitter detectives discovered that rapper Jay-Z had finally followed someone on the platform, nearly everyone was surprised to find that instead of Beyoncé, it was a random South African man.

Global (25 June, 2023)—Recently in the world of Twitter, one South African man shocked the platform’s streets by becoming the only person rapper Jay-Z followed, especially when not even Beyoncé—Jay-Z’s wife—got the follow back.

Nearly everyone was surprised, except for the man,@VusiMaxatshwa1 himself.

South Africa Confused, But Happy to Take the Win

After Twitter detective @ChrisExcel revealed that @VusiMaxatshwa1 got Jay-Z’s only nod of approval a few days ago, South African Twitter erupted.

As several users verified that Mr. Carter did in fact follow Mavusana, the unexpected discovery sparked questions, celebrations, hilarious reactions and sent @VusiMaxatshwa1 trending all over the platform.

While surprise took hold of most people, @VusiMaxatshwa1 remained calm, cool and collected.

“Guys…It’s very simple. Real recognizes Real,” he shared confirming the follow.

Does Jay-Z Just Want to be South African?

Despite the follow likely being an accident (and since unfollowed), this isn’t the first time the rapper has given his ‘only follow’ to a South African. Many recalled the global star’s last big follow a few years back, which again, did not go to Beyoncé, but to South Africa’s Thule Mgaga.
