AI is at it again, and this time, it’s showing people what an ‘Average Day’ in South Africa looks like. They might just be onto us!

South Africa (05 February 2024)—If you’re on the internet often, you’re probably no stranger to the weird (and sometimes wonderful) creations Artificial Intelligence can cook up. From Cape Town’s Avengers to South Africa as a villain, we’ve seen it all. But another recent batch of visuals depicting an ‘Average Day’ in South Africa has us giggling in high notes for its…’accuracy’.

According to the visual story created by ‘AI TRÄSKET’, an ‘average day’ in SA is filled with playing sports, finding treasure and, of course, having an adorable sidekick alongside you for every part of your journey. (No, it’s not a Springbok). We also apparently get very rich, very quickly. There are no shops around us either in the open planes of wildlife we call home, except for one: a Ferrari dealership. Obviously.

Watch: AI Shows People an ‘Average Day’ in South Africa on TikTok.

The video has sparked many giggles from its 2.1 million views for reasons that need little explanation. But, in true South African humour, many locals played along without hesitation.

Here are some of the comments:

“My Meerkat and I found a diamond yesterday.”—Gary Shell.

“Finally, accurate South African representation!!”—Omfile.

“I’m saving my gold chunk for a rainy day.”—Brandon Wessels.

“Anyone want to exchange meerkats? I think mine is broken?”—Kgopolo Mphuthi on her meerkat not leading her to excessive amounts of gold.

“My elephant is too lazy to carry anything, he spends his day getting drunk on Amarula.”—Isabellé

“Yes this is true. I unfortunately don’t have an elephant cause you need a license but I’ll get one soon,”—@fofo.

“My meerkat doesn’t want to play rugby with me :(“—Nthati.

We’re not sure which South Africans actually identify with this ‘average day’, but if you’re out there, we need to see you and your meerkat urgently.

Adam Levine whipped out a special phrase in Afrikaans for the locals in the audience at the Maroon 5 Concert in Cape Town, and no it’s not the phrase you’re thinking of:

Cape Town, South Africa (02 February 2024)—The Maroon 5 mission to South Africa had many locals buzzing this week as the concert drew closer and closer. From little fans like 6-year-old Jagger (yes, as in, ‘Moves Like Jagger’) to fandoms on the internet, the Calabash concert was shrouded in expectations.

But what many weren’t expecting, was lead singer Adam Levine to whip out a local language to address the audience!

While the guitar hummed in the background, Mr Levine prepared himself for his version of a prepared speech. Any non-native speaker who has ever had to stand up and speak Afrikaans in front of an audience can probably feel the second-hand anxiety from the moment. But the singer mustered up his courage and trekked on.

Explaining that Afrikaans is a “very difficult language”, he proceeded to explain that he asked his wife (the iconic Behati Prinsloo, who is Namibian) for some help on what to say.

While many eagerly awaited some of our spicer Afrikaans phrases that start with ‘jou ma se…’ Adam kept things clean and opted for a sweeter phrase instead—”Julle Lyk Baie Mooi”.

The lead added that ‘jy lyk baie mooi’ is something he says to his wife, which inspired him to share the love with the audience.

@c_yan_duh_ he actually did quite well😂 #calabashsouthafrica #maroon5 #adamlevine #concert #capetown ♬ original sound – c_yan_duh_

Many South Africans appreciated the effort, with some joking that “Charlize is not going to believe this” and others adding that his pronunciation was better than theirs in school.

Some opted to share that he could’ve gone for ‘hulle weet nie wat ons weet nie’ but locals know there’s more than enough of that phrase going around thanks to Dricus du Plesis’ recent historic victory.

A spirited South African cricket fan has gained viral fame at Newlands, Cape Town, for her entertaining double drink-down captured on the “audience cam,” sparking a lighthearted international debate.

Western Cape, South Africa (23 January 2024) – A South African cricket fan has stolen the spotlight at Newlands, Cape Town, for her impressive and entertaining antics during a recent game.

Caught on the “audience cam,” this young lady’s unexpected double drink-down has become the talk of the town, showcasing the infectious spirit and humour of South African cricket fans.

The video captured the moment when the camera focused on her, and without hesitation, she swiftly downed her drink, much to the delight of the onlookers. However, the true magic happened a little while later when the camera revisited her spot. Undeterred by the attention, she playfully seized a drink from the neighbouring gentleman and repeated her feat, leaving the audience in splits.

@ackmla she strikes twice ✓ #cricket #sa20 #micapetownvspaarlroyals #SAMA28 #southafrica #capetown #newlands ♬ Popular – Music from the HBO Original Series – The Weeknd & Madonna

The video has since gone viral, drawing attention to her spirited performance and sparking a humorous debate in the comment section. Some viewers amusingly claimed she might be Australian or Canadian, attempting to share this viral sensation’s glory. However, South Africans were quick to set the record straight.

One commenter hilariously remarked, “I know a Canadian girl when I see one!” while another playfully quipped, “Things don’t get more Australian than this 😂.” The comment section further erupted with laughter as individuals from both Canada and Australia enthusiastically claimed her as their own, prompting a proud response from South Africans defending their compatriots.

“Why does everyone think she’s Aussie 😂 that’s an iconic Saffa girl right there 😌😂,” exclaimed one supporter, emphasising the unmistakable South African flair on display. Another commenter light-heartedly addressed the cultural confusion, stating, “These comments haibo. Now we must explain South Africa and Cricket 😂.”

The highlight of the footage, according to many, was the moment she boldly snatched the man’s beer with unapologetic confidence.

Comments flooded in, with one fan declaring, “This… This is how legends are made!!! She knew the assignment!!”

The overwhelming response from the online community echoed a sentiment of admiration, with phrases like “Champion 💪🏆👍😂😂😂” emphasizing the collective appreciation for her spontaneous and entertaining act.

While some good-natured banter ensued between the Australians and Canadians in the comment section, it was abundantly clear that this round belonged to the spirited South African cricket fan who, with a double drink-down, has become a viral legend.

Sorry Australia and Canada, but this time, South Africa takes the win – not once, but twice!

Cheers to the infectious spirit of cricket fans and the unexpected moments that make the game even more enjoyable for all.

A viral pothole in Johannesburg has got the internet giggling (and sighing in frustration) after graduating from road problem to tiny ecosystem:

Johannesburg, South Africa (19 January 2024) — A Johannesburg pothole has gone viral for all reasons funny and slightly concerning.

We all know that one pothole. The one you have to brace yourself for in the morning before work. The swimming pool just waiting to happen on a rainy day. Or, the one that takes on the characteristics of an aggressive pimple; returning back time after time after time.

One pothole has earned its not-so-proud place on South African Twitter (X), and we couldn’t help but chuckle at the pure satirical creativity of the users who weighed in on its… aesthetic?

As we all know, X is a pretty sassy place where sarcasm runs rife. However, under the guise of humour on this post, an important and obvious message is spotlighted: this is what happens when effort isn’t put in to take care of the little things. Because small problems grow (sometimes quite literally).

Still, getting a message out there through humour is what South Africans do best (especially when it comes to a viral pothole). Something else South Africans do pretty well though, is take up initiative when authorities do not. Case in point? The Joburg resident in his 80s who made headlines for all the time he spent fixing exactly this kind of problem.

The latest viral pothole posted by Gareth van Onselen appears to be slowly transitioning from the Department of Public Works and Infrastructure’s problem to that of the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries. We’re also not sure if a small family of critters has taken up residence here, but we wouldn’t be surprised.

Strap in for a laugh and hopefully, a bit of drive to make a difference:

Cue the iconic comments:

“Who got the contract for this garden?”—@rowpolo

“Dunno..just needs some pot plants and paving to brighten it up?”—@BlueNip

“You should apply to have it shown at the Chelsea Flower Show.”—@Pete_carswell

“Budget cuts at the Botanical Gardens?”—@okapidavid

“when I’m big I want to be a traffic circle.”—@rfbarnard

“I’m no horticulturalist but it looks like it needs some fertiliser?”—@LiebenbergCarl

“Maybe it will have its own coffeeshop soon.”—@Driftwood077

“It’s like a little pocket park.”—@freqflyer

“Reforesting is a vital strategy to fighting climate change.”—@ienzmm

Trevor Noah’s Advert Showing Off South Africa has got some stiff competition for views. While the famous comedian depicted the SA that can experienced with moola, Sammy Hall shows us the SA that can be experienced mahala. Take a look:

Somewhere in South Africa (16 January 2024) — Almost two months ago, Trevor Noah made an advert highlighting all the awesome things South Africa has to offer. Trevor Noah’s advert may have been made with a tourism boost in mind, but it also got many locals eager to explore our own country inspired by the legendary comedian’s top-tier humour.

But, some South Africans were encouraged to take showing our foreign friends around one step further, given that, Trevor Noah’s advert isn’t exactly budget-friendly.

Cue TikTokker Sami Hall, who decided to give us all a hilarious response to the comedian’s take with her Rand-Friendly version of the original (read,’ South Africa for Broke Bitches’).

Where Trevor showcases our brilliant beaches, Sami offers her own recommendations for cooling down in the heat for those who can’t afford beach trips.

For those seeking a budget alternative to the five-star hotels Trevor mentions, Sami’s got her own plan of action (and yes, you’ll need Mozzi repellent).

And when it comes to meeting the ‘lions’ of South Africa, the content creator’s very clever suggestion is sure to give you a giggle.

As Sami’s video reminded us (and the other 100,000 people who watched it), South Africa is still a blast even on budget because of the one thing inflation can never take away from us—our humour.

Watch: Rand-Friendly South Africa!

@samihallsays I mos told you guys I was busy with something fun! 🤣🤣🤣 So, recently a famous comedian showed you all the wonders South Africa has to offer (if you earn in dollars) but today I wanted to show you South Africa for broke bitches 🤣🤣🤣 A special thank you to the main sponsor @STEYN IP ‎who is not only responsible for protecting my brands but who is also always excited with me whenever I get a crazy idea. 😁 What is your favorite rand friendly thing to do in South Africa? – Thank you to each and every sponsor for making this parody add a possibility! – Thank you @FOKKOL MERCHANDISE for the sexy merch – Thank you @LionsRugbyCo and Mufasa!!! This scene was literally the first scene in my head and I am so glad you guys came on board 😁 – Thank you @Victron Energy SA for making me forget about loadshedding for a bit and for joining in this madnes – #dorsland thank you for my sexy vellies and for coming on board – Thanks to our baby, @Mieliepap Plaaswinkel ,also thank you for feeding the crew… 🤪 No one likes to work hungry Please go and show all the sponsors some love 😁 Also, a quick thank you to #goodiesrestaurant for allowing me to film at their put put coarse. 🥰 Thank you to my co-stars @TheArodSA1 (aka the criminal kak kop) and my dad (the hosepipe man) 🤣🤣🤣 Okay bye ™ #samihallsays #okaybye #trevornoah #parody #southafrica #comedy ♬ original sound – SamiHallSays

If you can’t find a Time Machine, you can always cruise back to the past with a little music. We can’t believe these songs turn 10 this year (because 10 years ago feels like it should still be the 90s) but here we are. Now let’s take you back to 2014!

Global (14 January 2024) — Cast your minds back in time. The year is 2014. Skinny jeans rule the world. Instagram is still for posting photos of your highly filtered breakfast, and the Disney film Frozen ruled the world (and every parent’s nightmares).

Ipad kids were only just getting started, and if you weren’t dreaming about attending Tomorrowland, what were you doing?

It seems like another lifetime—one we’re not entirely sure can be referred to as a simpler time (the 2010s were filled with new discoveries). But, it was a priceless part of history, the coming-of-age era for many millennials and a time most of us can look back on fondly with equal doses of cringe and nostalgia.

If you’ve caught yourself longing for the early 2010s lately, there’s one very simple way to time travel back. Zero time machines required! Blasting the beats of the past has always had a profound effect on putting us back in a different space and time, and so we’re throwing it back to 2014 by celebrating 10 iconic mainstream songs turning 10 in 2024:

1. Happy — Pharrell Williams

2. All of Me — John Legend

3. Shake it Off — Taylor Swift

4. Summer — Calvin Harris

5. A Sky Full of Stars — Coldplay

6. Runaway (U & I) — Galantis

7. Rather Be — Clean Bandit

8. Chandelier — SIA

9. Drunk in Love — Beyonce and Jay-Z

10. Fancy — Iggy Azalea ft Charli XCX

We will braai you! A South African cleverly turned the tables on a scammer with witty banter about a braai, sparking viral laughter.

South Africa (08 January 2024) – A South African’s response to a fraudulent message on WhatsApp is bringing laughter to many. The situation perfectly illustrates how humour can be a powerful tool against those looking to deceive and how sometimes all you need is to offer “to braai” a scammer.

Scammers have long been the bane of internet users. Initially popping up in our email inboxes with promises of lottery wins or inheritance windfalls, these fraudsters have now infiltrated our social media platforms like WhatsApp. Their modus operandi remains consistent: exploit the less tech-savvy, obtain personal and financial information, and drain victims of their hard-earned money.

In a recent encounter, a scammer initiated a conversation with what they thought was a potential victim.

“Good morning sir,” the scammer innocently greeted.

Seizing the opportunity for a laugh and to perhaps give the scammer a taste of their own medicine, the “victim” responded with wit and flair.

The scammer introduced himself, stating, “My name is Tumelo. I’m from Pretoria but currently based in California.” Unfazed, the quick-witted respondent identified himself as “Mr. Khullen Ngwenya based in Zimbabwe.”

However, when the scammer pitched his fraudulent scheme, claiming that he helps people invest and make money, asking the “victim” to send him R10,000, which would become R100,000 in 24 hours, the table turned hilariously.

Responding in kind, Mr Ngwenya countered, “Ok, money is not a problem, I’m a satanist and a member of (the) great Illuminati, send me your account details I want to do the transfer now. If you don’t bring my R100 000 in 24 hrs as you promised, this Friday we will braai you with my members and give your blood as sacrifice to our god.”

The “victim”, obviously not a satanist or a member of the Illuminati, was using the concept to scare the scammer, which may have worked as the messages were read but not responded to. And then the “victim” decided to take it one step further.

“Please don’t blue tick me. If you fail to provide your account details, we will still braai you. I have entered into an agreement with you.”

This was when all hilarity ensued. As the scammer attempted to backtrack, claiming it was all a joke and begging for mercy with messages, the humour of the situation only intensified.

“Sorry sir I was joking I dont do investments”

“In the name of jesus fire to you no weapon shall prosper. God I save is strong fire fire”

“Sir pliz talk to me pliz, I was joking I dont do investments 😭😭😭😭 I can give my mother’s number talk to her pliz 😭😭😭😭

“my kid will sufer if I die pliz 😭😭😭😭

While scams are no laughing matter and can have severe consequences for victims, this light-hearted exchange serves as a reminder that humour can sometimes be the best defence and everyone who has seen it online agrees that this is one of the funniest conversations they have seen with a scammer.

AI was used to turn Cape Town areas into action figures, and soon The ‘Aweh Force’ was born. From the ultimate Constantia mom to the special edition collectable, Fourways on Holiday’, this is one for the giggles:

Cape Town, South Africa (19 December 2023) — We’ve seen Artificial Intelligence do some pretty curious things this year, especially when it comes to the many visuals AI’s cooked up. From the ‘Queen of South Africa’ to our own dream house fit for a franchise fantasy, it’s safe to say that AI has given us some food for thought. While not all AI creations are, well, accurate, many have at least given us a good giggle. The latest viral sensation? Cape Town’s ‘Aweh Force’.

Prompted by Charlie Human who is based in Cape Town, AI created a fictional shoot of what people from different parts of the Cape from Muizenberg to Sea Point would look like in action figure form—the AI gift of the giggles we didn’t know we needed.

We’ve got our knight in designer sunglasses (AKA, the final boss of Constantia moms), the Wizard of Obs, and a character straight out of GTA Athlone. Oh, and the Cape Town Expansion Pack addition, the King of Stellenbosch. Not to mention the special edition collectable: Fourways on Holiday.

As far as stereotypes and exaggeration go, many locals laughed in viral agreement that the AI managed to get a lot of key Cape Town elements down pretty accurately. Of course, not everyone from these areas may fit the description, but that’s because there is no one-size-fits-all description when it comes to the melting pot that is the Mother City.

Meet the ‘Aweh Force’:

Giggle warning: wrapping up the sentiment of how resilient and humourous locals are when it comes to adversity is ’12 Days of Christmas, The South African Version’, as sang by a Joburg newsreader!

Johannesburg, South Africa (10 December 2023) — One thing about South Africans, what might be considered stressful to one nation is an opportunity for song (and laughter) in ours. Summing this sentiment up aptly and in festive tune, is ’12 Days of Christmas, The South African Version.’

Beautifully sang by  newsreader Maneo Motsoeneng on radio station 919, the tune is a giggle-worthy version of the popular Christmas carol that wraps up the many things locals dealt with this year—from success stories to scandals and all the potholes in between.

“Where the traditional lyrics mention lords a-leaping, swans a-swimming and geese a-laying, our version includes potholes lurking and hailstorms hailing. Instead of a true love, we have an X (formerly Twitter) crush, and obviously we had to replace four calling birds with hadedas. As for the three French hens and two turtle doves, we have three mayors and two fake doctors,” share the Joburg-based station who are well aware of what their listeners have endured this year.

While much of the content surrounds Joburg-based events, the sentiment of finding the humour in adversity is wholly South African.

“Having a sense of humour is essential for maintaining good mental health in the face of so many daily frustrations and fears. The news by its very nature, is often a source of distress, anxiety and anger…but we can manage how we tackle each and every day,” says the station’s Dr Sarah Britten.

“Life in Joburg has lots of frustrations, but if we can laugh about them, it helps,” she adds.

Watch for a Giggle and Give Yourself and Your Neighbour a Round of Applause

AI’s comically inaccurate depictions of life in South Africa, featuring people riding lions and engaging in absurd activities, spark a wave of laughter and witty commentary from the online community.

South Africa (08 December 2023) – South Africans recently found themselves in stitches after a series of side-splitting images capturing the humorous side of artificial intelligence were posted online.

The images depict AI attempting to illustrate South Africans engaged in quintessentially South African activities but with a comically inaccurate twist.

The uproarious collection showcases individuals riding lions, engaging in unconventional activities with elephants, and even sharing a smoke session with cheetahs. It seems that AI, in its attempt to understand the daily lives of South Africans, has taken a whimsical detour into the realm of the absurd. One can’t help but chuckle at the imaginative scenarios painted by the AI algorithms. The online community, always ready for a good laugh, flooded the comments section with their own humorous anecdotes and affirmations.

One witty South African commented, “As a South African myself, I can tell you that’s spot on. I once rode a cheetah. She’s now divorced.” This tongue-in-cheek response reflects the good-natured humour that permeates South African culture, where locals embrace the absurdity of life with a hearty laugh.

Another comment playfully acknowledged the challenges of navigating certain areas, stating, “As a South African… I also confirm. Uber avoids some areas here… so we just sommer make a plan nê?” The ability to “make a plan” is a quintessential South African trait, highlighting the resilience and resourcefulness of the people in the face of any unexpected situation.

“Chilling around the house with the lights off is more accurate,” quipped another participant, humorously pointing out the AI’s misinterpretation of the day-to-day activities of South Africans. This response captures the essence of the shared jokes and inside humour that binds the community together.

The playful banter continued with a cheeky remark poking fun at stereotypes: “People think that we ride elephants to work here. Don’t be absurd, we don’t have jobs under the ANC! LOL.” This comment cleverly combines humour with a subtle social commentary, showcasing the resilience of South Africans in finding humour even in challenging circumstances.

While AI may have missed the mark in accurately depicting the daily lives of South Africans, the collective response from the online community is a reminder of the nation’s ability to find joy and laughter in the midst of the absurd.
