A seagull stuck in an unfortunate situation at the top of a 20m lamppost was rescued thanks to an everyday hero who obviously isn’t afraid of heights and bravely went above and beyond in every literal sense. Take a look!

spar hero of the week

Gordon’s Bay, South Africa (12 February 2024) — A seagull found itself in a sticky situation in Gordon’s Bay recently after it ended up stuck at the top of a 20-metre lamppost.

According to diving centre Just Africa Scuba who found the bird in the distressing circumstance, the seagull had reportedly gotten tangled up in a fishing line that was hanging from the pole.

This caused the seagull to naturally attempt to free itself but to no avail. After several calls to rescue services were made and amounted to no action, one brave man took matters under his own wings.

JJ Engelbrecht, described as a “passionate conservationist” by his mom—who proudly shared the story alongside Just Africa Scuba—was not going to let the seagull flap around hopelessly. As such, he undertook the kind of task that would give anyone with a fear of heights sleepless nights and began climbing the 20-metre lamppost!

While this kind of bravery is not advisable for those who do not have the correct equipment or training, JJ’s climb was something out of a movie. Bare-footed and unphased, he made his way right to the top as though climbing a jungle gym at school. In no time, he reached the seagull, freed the bird enabling it to fly away on its merry way and potentially earned himself a new career as a daredevil.

Watch: JJ in Action!

The community has rightly approved JJ as a hero without a cape (though he might need one if he decides to continue extreme climbing adventures), and we couldn’t agree more.

If you have kids and enough paper bags from the grocery store to build a small house, this South African Mom’s viral upcycling hack was meant to find you!

South Africa (28 January 2024) — A South African mom (who also happens to be award-winning broadcaster Lebang Kgosana) has made upcycling go viral after she gave grocery store paper bags a second chance at life in the most practical way.

Many South Africans know ‘the drawer’—AKA, the home of all the bags you say you’ll reuse but almost always forget to. Whether they’re material or paper, these bags often build up to the point where it wouldn’t be unreasonable to build a small house from them.

Beyond the discipline that is the art of reusing these bags lies another great idea: upcycling!

This is exactly what Lebang did when wrapping her children’s books for the school year, and with over 6.1 million views on TikTok, it’s safe to say that her idea caught the internet’s attention.

Taking bags that have made many a local smile in times of hunger before, mama Lebang gave the full run down on how to wrap the books neatly, while serving the purpose of reusable paper bags.

@lebangkgosana My online grocery shopping bags being recycled as we cover some school books!! #BackToSchool #fyp ♬ original sound – #LifeWithLebang

While some users had reservations surrounding how ‘aesthetic’ the books looked, others defended it, noting that there is a lesson covering those pages: being resourceful and mindful of materials that are meant to be re-used.

Some even nodded that they’d take the tip for their university notebooks, while teachers also agreed that the idea was one that needed to go further.

Even if you don’t have notebooks that need covering, a mindset that sees one product as potential for another is something makes a shift in our efforts for the Earth.

Meanwhile, if you know a South African sustainable thinker like this creator, you can nominate them for these upcoming sustainability awards!

Trevor Noah’s Advert Showing Off South Africa has got some stiff competition for views. While the famous comedian depicted the SA that can experienced with moola, Sammy Hall shows us the SA that can be experienced mahala. Take a look:

Somewhere in South Africa (16 January 2024) — Almost two months ago, Trevor Noah made an advert highlighting all the awesome things South Africa has to offer. Trevor Noah’s advert may have been made with a tourism boost in mind, but it also got many locals eager to explore our own country inspired by the legendary comedian’s top-tier humour.

But, some South Africans were encouraged to take showing our foreign friends around one step further, given that, Trevor Noah’s advert isn’t exactly budget-friendly.

Cue TikTokker Sami Hall, who decided to give us all a hilarious response to the comedian’s take with her Rand-Friendly version of the original (read,’ South Africa for Broke Bitches’).

Where Trevor showcases our brilliant beaches, Sami offers her own recommendations for cooling down in the heat for those who can’t afford beach trips.

For those seeking a budget alternative to the five-star hotels Trevor mentions, Sami’s got her own plan of action (and yes, you’ll need Mozzi repellent).

And when it comes to meeting the ‘lions’ of South Africa, the content creator’s very clever suggestion is sure to give you a giggle.

As Sami’s video reminded us (and the other 100,000 people who watched it), South Africa is still a blast even on budget because of the one thing inflation can never take away from us—our humour.

Watch: Rand-Friendly South Africa!

@samihallsays I mos told you guys I was busy with something fun! 🤣🤣🤣 So, recently a famous comedian showed you all the wonders South Africa has to offer (if you earn in dollars) but today I wanted to show you South Africa for broke bitches 🤣🤣🤣 A special thank you to the main sponsor @STEYN IP ‎who is not only responsible for protecting my brands but who is also always excited with me whenever I get a crazy idea. 😁 What is your favorite rand friendly thing to do in South Africa? – Thank you to each and every sponsor for making this parody add a possibility! – Thank you @FOKKOL MERCHANDISE for the sexy merch – Thank you @LionsRugbyCo and Mufasa!!! At an achievers assembly, a young student headed to the floor instead of the stage in an epic fall. However, the video of the moment went viral not because of the fall itself, but because of the incredible maturity of her peers!

Randburg, South Africa (08 December 2023) — If you’ve ever been through school, you know that something like falling in front of everyone during assembly (let alone an award ceremony) is the worry of sleepless nights. But, not unlike Jennifer Lawrence at the 2013 Oscars, a young school girl dealt with it like a champion, and more impressively, so did her peers in their maturity.

In a video posted by the student Kayleigh’s mother, the youngster gets up to receive her award. However, due to a dead leg, she headed to the floor instead of the stage.

What captured people on TikTok and sent the video into viral spheres of over a million views was not necessarily the fall, but the response of the students surrounding her.

@laurenivey87 Show her some love guys. Only my child will epically bail at achievers assembly today 🫣😂#fail #fall #epicfail #primaryschool #assembly #showsomelove #achievers #embarressing #fyp @Tyla #fypシ @Beyoncé @947joburg @Kfm 94.5 ♬ original sound – LaurenIvey87

Not so much as a chuckle was evident, as all the students maturely carried on and didn’t make the youngster feel embarrassed at all.

As many of the commenters noted, this never would’ve been the case during their schooling days; which garnered great respect for both the students and Cliffview Primary School as a whole.

“The maturity of these kids need to be studied, my mind would fail me,” commented one user while another added “I watched this like 10 times and I’m still tryna understand how she fell and NO ONE laughed.”

“Only my child will epically bail at [an] achievers assembly,” shared her mom who added that the one who laughed the most was Kayleigh herself, upon coming home and her mom thereafter who commended her child as a rockstar.

TikTok has deemed that there is hope for the future generation, whose emotional maturity is commendable!

In what might be our favourite viral video of the year, a little boy’s happiness has brought the world to tears of joy. And, the Santa Shoebox joy video has garnered millions of views, which means more people now know about the Project!

South Africa (21 November 2023) — In what might be our favourite viral videos of the year, a little boy’s happiness erupts after he receives a most special gift whilst at school in the Western Cape. The Santa Shoebox joy was so infectious, the video garnered over 5 million views!

In a world where so much of what goes viral is without substance, the video is as refreshing as it is moving. It’s also perspective shifting in a way that doesn’t simply showcase what the magic of giving looks like, but what it feels like from the eyes of those who might never have enjoyed a gift of any kind before.

For those who don’t know, the Santa Shoebox Project is one very close to Good Things Guy’s heart. Round-the-clock, Santa’s volunteers at the Project rally as many people as possible to pledge shoeboxes filled with essentials and surprises so underprivileged children, like the star of the video, get to know what receiving a special gift feels like.

Even more wonderful than the raw joy evident in the video are the comments of people from every corner of the world asking how to be part of the Project.

Thanks to its viral acclaim, more people know about the Santa Shoebox movement and more can spread the word. And if you want to be part of spreading the shoebox joy from wherever you are, here’s how to do it:

The Virtual Santa Shoeboxes

Thanks to the Virtual Santa Shoeboxes initiative, more underprivileged children in hard-to-reach regions can enjoy the most festive shoebox around.

The shoebox receiver will enjoy:

  • Toothbrush & toothpaste
  • Soap & facecloth
  • School supplies
  • A toy
  • Sweets
  • A PEP voucher or an outfit of clothing

You can contribute to one or more by either making a donation to the Virtual Shoebox campaign or purchasing one. The volunteers will then pack your goods and before you know it, you’ll be the reason behind a huge smile.

A wardrobe malfunction turns into a triumph of kindness in this Christmas advert, and it’s a cracker of a reminder that we can all do our part to help others shine whether we’re helping out with an upcoming festive concert, or simply seeing the opportunity to lend a hand to someone who needs it:

South Africa (16 November 2023) — The Good Things Guy team are loving this year’s Christmas advert roll-out, and we’re shamelessly slipping more and more into festive mode with each passing day. While a recent ad might have made some feel peckish, it reminded us that festive concert season is also upon us, standing sweetly as one of the most special parts of the festive run.

Woolworths UK’s Christmas advert tells the creative story of little ones adorning a feast of costumes as they gear up for their festive concert.

That is, all except one unfortunate apple, who en route to the show, leaves her costume behind at the bus stop.

As anyone who has ever been a part of a school concert of any kind knows, losing a costume or actually breaking a leg is the stuff of stressful, sleepless nights (mostly for parents and teachers).

However, Little Apple’s friends soon come to the rescue and create a new costume for her, helping her transform into the most exciting star of the show—the Christmas cracker!

The message left behind is a cracker of a reminder to be kind, lend a hand and do your part in helping others shine this festive season in the concert that is our own lives.

We also have no doubt that there are going to be tons of wonderful performances from the little South Africans across the country as they wrap up the school year, and we want to cheer for as many of them as possible.

So, if your little ones have an upcoming end-of-year concert, we’d love to feel part of the audience and invite you to tag Good Things Guy in those festive concert videos to put the cheer in festive cheer.

Westville Senior Primary’s Marimba Band has gone viral for their performance at Nationals, and it’s nothing but joy-inducing!

Pretoria, South Africa (15 November 2023) — A marimba band from Westville Senior Primary based in KwaZulu-Natal has risen to viral fame after a video of them performing at the South African Schools’ Band Association’s competition in Pretoria.

The performance put forward by the band oozed so much energy, that it translated right through the screens it’s being watched on. The trending sound, ‘More passion, more energy, more footwork’ came to our minds while enjoying the clip as we found ourselves moving along with the rhythm as the little dancers flowed in admirable harmony to their music.

And, we weren’t alone in our thorough enjoyment of both music and moves. Over 320,000 people have watched the video at the time of writing this article, with thousands of shares and loads of comments praising the show.

It’s no surprise then that the Westville Senior Primary Marimba Band not only won the Primary Schools Section of the competition but also walked away with the award for the Marimba Band with the Most Musicality.

They also made Westville Senior Marimba Band history by receiving National Colours for the first time.

This has been a huge achievement for the budding performers, a well as the teachers involved.

Meanwhile, in other exciting music news, the University of the Free State’s Choir made big moves on international stages recently after their winning performances at the European Choir Games, which they competed in for the first time.

A simple question, ‘how are you doing? Really, how are you?’ turned out not to have such a simple answer. But, it certainly had a hopeful one that all women in South Africa need to hear, especially ahead of the 16 Days of Activism:

South Africa (14 November 2023) — Every year, at the end of November, an international campaign dubbed ’16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence’ reminds people around the world that the fight for women’s respect, safety, and rights is far from over.

This rings ever louder in countries like ours, where gender-based violence is not a thing of history books but exists as the pandemic that ensued.

The 16 Days of Activism campaign extends a bigger message of no violence against women and children. From 25 November, loud calls for change, stories that break hearts and anger communities and statistics that send chills down our spines with the intention to mobilise against these, generally take centre stage.

For women in South Africa for whom these realities are very close to home, it is a time that’s ever-necessary while being emotionally strenuous, infuriating and even demotivating in the same breath.

But, there is another side to this coin, and it is the bloom of hope.

Taking to social media, Dr Ntombifikile Mtshali, the CEO of NPC Shout-It-Now who is a doctor and social justice activist, shared an important open letter.

The question that inspired it was simple, though the answer was not: “How are you doing? Really, how are you?”.

Taking the path of hope, Dr Mtshali shared an embrace of a message for women that’ll remind you that the fight is not fruitless, your dreams are still yours and although the road is winding, it is not one you need to walk alone.

“The change may be difficult to see, but it exists. Because the work of the women, their impact, our impact, reverberates across time and generations.”—Dr Ntombifikile Mtshali.

In a thoughtful Christmas story, a trio of elderly best friends show us that the answer to some of life’s existential crises is a little creative joy:

Global (12 November 2023) — While many Christmas adverts tend to hone in on concepts that relate to families and children, Amazon’s ‘Joy Ride’ festive feature gave a trio of golden girls their tale of bliss, and it’s tastefully thoughtful.

In the one-minuter, three elderly gal pals sit on a bench, longingly looking out at the children sledging down slopes of snow. The sympathy (and for some, empathy) is very real in those initial seconds as we are forced to face the age-old uncomfortable fact that some of our favourite experiences will not be possible forever.

Or, will they? (Cue an upbeat Christmas drumroll).

As one of our ladies gets a twinkle in her eye, the short story transforms from existential crisis to thoughtful joy. Deciding that where there’s a will there’s a way, our protagonist orders sled-fitting cushions so that she and the girls can go on a joyride just like the old days.

As the three become young girls again and cruise down the slope, their happiness flows from screens to hearts and we’re left with the message that as cliche as it may be, thoughtfulness counts a lot (and can evidently quell existential woes).

If you haven’t met Mbali Nhlapo on TikTok yet, let us put you on! The queen of housekeeping is the icon you didn’t know you needed:

South Africa (01 September 2023) — When I hear “My name is Mbali Nhlapo and I’m the housekeeper”, I know I’m in for some much-needed housecare schooling, writes Good Things Guy’s Ashleigh Nefdt.

Along with hundreds of thousands of other South Africans who love the housekeeping queen’s edu-videos, I see Mbali Nhlapo as a national hero.

From sneaker cleaning tips and tricks to upcycling ideas and getting rid of stubborn suede couch stains we’ve avoided for weeks, Mbali comes armed with answers to virtually all cleaning and care questions with an energy that actually makes you excited to do chores.

Mbali’s content is so loved, she’s garnered over 200 000 followers.

But, it comes as little surprise given the passion she puts into her content and the experience to back it all up. Mbali (40) runs her own cleaning service, Sisters @ Work and believes in the power of housekeepers who are in the industry out of love.

For her, cleaning has its own sparkle of personal achievement, but she also understands that not everyone has the knowledge to unleash their inner housekeeper.

While Mbali might have envisioned herself as a powerhouse businesswoman, TikTok stardom is a whole other, unexpected chapter.

But, as it is with her business, Mbali takes her TikTok chapter on with both hands and helps others in the process.

South Africans Embrace Their Inner Mbali Nhlapo
