Hayley Carmen Jackson is fighting a big battle at only 15 years old: beating Ewing Sarcoma. But she is not alone, thanks to an army of support behind her!

Durban, South Africa (26 February 2024) — 15-year-old Hayley Carmen Jackson was diagnosed with a great battle in October last year. What began as pain in her left hip turned out to be Ewing Sarcoma — a cancer that impacts bone cells and tissue and is one of the more rare kinds of cancer.

For obvious and heart-jabbing reasons, this battle has changed life for the young teenager and Durban Girls High student. But, it has not shaken her willingness to give this fight her all.

Her community describes Hayley’s character as resilient, strong and vibrant. She’s already nailed seven chemotherapy sessions already meaning she’s halfway to completing chemo, and she’s made the decision to continue her schooling as a determined academic.

Inspired by this brave girl’s heart, Hayley’s community has joined her fight against Ewing Sarcoma. Hearts for Hayley, her social media update page, has shared various stages of her journey. Two things are consistent: Hayley’s smile, and support-filled interactions.

But nowhere has support for Hayley been more apparent than in her crowdfunding campaign as started by her grandfather. To date, R106,214 has already been raised out of the R350,000 goal. And the donor comments are overwhelmed with the most special messages.

With huge courage and an army of South African support behind her, the community-reliant goal of being able to pay for the treatment her parents cannot afford does not seem like a distant dream! In fact, she’s almost a third of the way there.

Hayley receives treatment in Cape Town, and all funds will go to her medical costs, accommodation and transportation.

You can find Hayley’s crowdfunding campaign here, or follow along with her updates here.

For the last 9 years, the CHOC Cows have swum the Midmar Mile to raise funds for children with cancer – this year, they celebrate 10 years.

KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa (01 February 2024) – A decade of swimming for a good cause, is what the CHOC Cows are celebrating this year! The herd of do-gooders have been swimming the Midmar Mile for 10 years, this year.

We know what you are probably thinking… “Cows? How can cows raise money?” Well, to be honest, they are not real cows, just humans dressed up as cows doing cool things!

Have you ever been to a sporting event like a cycling race and seen someone dressed as a cow for the race? If the answer is yes, then you have seen a dedicated individual (or group) raising money for CHOC. CHOC provides support and care for children affected by childhood cancer.

The CHOC Childhood Cancer Foundation SA is a non-profit organisation that advocates for the health and well-being of children and teenagers diagnosed with cancer or life-threatening blood disorders. The passionate and dedicated staff and volunteers of CHOC aim to save lives through early detection and comprehensive support programmes for the families affected by cancer, such as; accommodation, transport assistance, psychosocial, emotional and practical support and more. They also provide awareness and education on childhood cancer and life-threatening blood disorders.

CHOC shared a happy update on the Cows’ Midmar history and the exciting plans for this year.

“In the picturesque province of KwaZulu-Natal, a unique herd emerged in August 2013 with a mission to make a difference.

The KZN Herd of The CHOC Cows was founded, and little did they know that their first event in 2014, the aQuelle Midmar Mile, would mark the beginning of a decade-long journey filled with passion, camaraderie, and impactful fundraising.

Dressed in distinctive cow prints, just over 30 swimmers made a splash at their inaugural Midmar Mile. Their presence was not only a visual spectacle but also a symbol of their commitment to raising funds for children with cancer. The bovine-inspired swimmers caught the attention of onlookers, leaving an indelible mark on the event.

As the years unfolded, The CHOC Cows of KZN continued to grow their herd, both in numbers and impact. Each year, the aQuelle Midmar Mile became more than just a swimming event; it transformed into a symbol of hope and support for those battling cancer. The community rallied around the cause, and the cow-printed swimmers became synonymous with the spirit of giving.”

The Cows are now more than 30 swimmers, they are an impactful group doing a great deal to make a difference in fighting childhood cancer. If you are going to be at the Midmar, be sure to keep an eye out for the Cows.

“As the 10th Dam Crossing approaches in just three weeks, the anticipation is palpable. The KZN Herd of The CHOC Cows is not only celebrating a milestone in their swimming journey but also a decade of making a meaningful impact on the lives of those in need. The cow print swimmers, once a small group with a big heart, have become a symbol of hope, resilience, and the power of community.

In a world often filled with challenges, The CHOC Cows of KZN remind us that simple gestures, like swimming a mile in cow print, can make a significant difference. Their story is a testament to the enduring spirit of giving, proving that when a community comes together with a shared purpose, they can create ripples of change that extend far beyond the waters of Midmar Dam.”

There are many shelters filled with senior dogs just waiting for the perfect retirement homes; Durban dogs have found peace at the Silver Paws Senior Sanctuary.

Durban, South Africa (26 January 2024) – The Silver Paws Senior Sanctuary is home to a pack of golden oldies, living out the best of the rest of their lives! The heartwarming charity is a kennel-free retirement sanctuary that takes in senior dogs who need a quiet place to spend the remaining years of their lives.

Salome Meyer-Louwrens and her husband Gerrie founded the sanctuary in 2018 after purchasing a large property and establishing their home.

There are no kennels on the property, instead, there are cosy dog beds scattered around the house and the dogs each have their favourite spots (even a few spots in the human’s bed).

Many of the senior dogs receive medical treatment for heart conditions and arthritis, but regular deworming and flea and tick treatments, along with vaccinations, are standard at the sanctuary too.

Each of the sliver-pawed pooches that arrive at the sanctuary is welcomed with open arms. Many of these seniors would otherwise be euthanised.

Salome offers love and affection to each of her retirees and when they cross the rainbow bridge, she is right there holding their paws. The Silver Paws Senior Sanctuary Facebook page is filled with memorial posts of the dogs that have lived out their lives and left a big space in Salome and Gerrie’s hearts.

The sanctuary is supported by donors who want to give these silver-pawed pooches a comfortable retirement. At the time of writing this, the Kloof Pick n Pay has a trolly where people can place food donations for the home. If you would like to find out how else to get involved, you can find out more via Facebook here.

A new Netflix documentary is shaking up the dinner table and South African twins are stars in the study!

Global (24 January 2024) — A new Netflix documentary is shaking up the dinner table as it seeks to show viewers how much power we have simply through the decisions we make when loading our plates. And, South African twins are stars of the study!

If you haven’t watched ‘You Are What You Eat: A Twin Experiment’, and you care about your body, this is definitely some food for thought.

The docuseries puts a Standford University Study into the spotlight as it seeks to compare two ways of eating (omnivore versus vegan) to chalk down what the impacts of both are. Because every person is so incredibly different in their genetic makeup, it’s often difficult to get accurate results for these kinds of studies as the researchers indicate. So, in a first for this kind of diet comparison, the study cleverly called on the most genetically similar individuals—twins.

Now if you’re thinking this is one long dissertation disguised as a TV show, you’d be mistaken. Not only does the show take us on the journey of the experiment’s stars, it also explores so many different avenues of food. From tracing why we’re predisposed to eating what many of us eat in our daily lives to exposing lesser-known truths in the agricultural industry and guiding us on how both of these impact the Earth—the show leaves few stones of curiosity unturned.

Needless to say, it’s about a lot more than which diet is healthier.

Each twin is given one of the diets to follow for eight weeks. Despite being set in the USA, subjects came from different backgrounds—including the twins from South Africa!

Beyond the information-rich content of the show, Pam and Wendy Michelson bring fun, warm and playful flavours to You Are What You Eat.

The two live, work and laugh together (as well as the obvious on-screen teasing) and proudly represent their home city of Durban. As chefs who have their own catering business—’ Amawele’, they’re also committing to showing South Africa off proudly through a deep love for our food culture.

Of course, being part of the study meant that one of the twins (we won’t reveal who) has to give up meat— a base of many South Africans favourite dishes. However, the creation of vegan biltong had us feeling a lot of respect for these two who wore their unofficial Rainbow Nation badges so proudly.

You can catch ‘You Are What You Eat: A Twin Experiment, and get ready to go down a rabbit hole that might lead you to some of the most important decisions of your health.

What began as former teacher Cristine Panday making sarmies for her students soon became a purpose-led mission that fed over 107,000 school children!

KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa (12 December 2023) — When Cristine Panday was a teacher, she knew pupils couldn’t learn while their stomachs were empty. What began as the former teacher preparing sandwiches in her kitchen for hungry kids soon became a force of kindness and ultimately, Cristine’s purpose.

“I have heard children ask for another sandwich to take home because there is no meal for supper. I have seen children save sandwiches to take home for parents or grandmothers, who have no food. I have met children who arrive at school without having supper the night before or breakfast in the morning. How could I ignore that there are hungry children sitting in those classrooms?” she shares.

After the pandemic hit, Cristine realised that there was a lot she was capable of as someone with a passion for children’s upliftment. This meant starting with the basics so many of our youth go without.

In South Africa, a lack of the basics like nutrition can directly impact their schooling, mental wellbeing and development.

The Department of Social Development revealed in October that eight million SA children are not getting enough nutrition. It is estimated that 38% of SA children are physically and mentally stunted due to malnutrition.

Fuelled by a passion to change these stats for the better, Cristine’s Pink Room Foundation is actively making change happen where it is most needed, in KZN communities and schools.

Today the Pink Room Foundation has delivered around 107,000 sandwiches to seven schools and five communities in Durban. And, the food-focused future they’re striving for is looking even more promising thanks to a new kitchen.

Drawing inspiration from the Pebbles Project Kitchen concept in the Western Cape, the KwaZulu-Natal version was soon in the pipeline.

The Pink Kitchen will have an innovative meal and production model to provide even more meals to schoolchildren far beyond sandwiches. Veggies and meals with meat will soon be prepared quickly before they’re packed and ready to bring hunger relief to schools in the province.

This is thanks to Cristine’s hunger to serve, and her husband Akash’s help.

“I never expected what I started in my own kitchen to become this big. I started because I wanted to feed children. Having been a Montessori teacher, I know that a healthy body leads to a healthy mind, which leads to a happy child,” adds Cristine.

The first meals produced from the Pink Kitchen will be delivered in the first week of the new school year on 22 January 2024 after the Christmas boxes for children’s homes are rolled out.

Three little lives’ just had their futures transformed for the better thanks to life-changing heart surgeries made possible by a guardian angel and a donation of many lifetimes:

Durban, South Africa (08 December 2023) — Three children with congenital heart diseases received life-changing surgeries at Lenmed Ethekwini Hospital and Heart Centre in Durban as the happy ending to a story sparked by a miracle.

Four-year-old Olwethu Ntshangase’s life with an atrial septal defect (a heart hole), five-year-old Wandile Memela who came into the world with poor oxygen flow and limited blood pumping abilities (Tetralogy of Fallot) and 13-month-old Thingolwethu whose condition was not disclosed but also falls under congenital heart disease, will now get a beautiful chance at life.

Thanks to the Angel Network Durban, hardworking medical teams and the hospital’s non-profit, The Children’s Cardiac Foundation of Africa, these little ones went from waiting-list to wonder-list status. However, none of this would’ve been possible without a bolt from the blue moment sparked by kindness and generosity.

According to Rachel Kinloch of the Angel Network, a donation worth literal lifetimes got the ball rolling. One day, the Network was contacted by an anonymous donor who wished to make a R1 million donation/sponsorship. The one condition of the generosity was that the money needed to be used for surgeries that would change or save the lives of children in South Africa.

Rachel, Tanya Altshuler and Rachel Maehler of the Angel Network gladly and quickly took on the task of finding organisations that help children facing these circumstances, with a focus on those who were born with life-threatening health issues.

After connecting with Umduduzi, an organisation that helps children facing life-threatening and limiting illnesses in KwaZulu-Natal, they were pointed to the Children’s Cardiac Foundation of Africa which had a big waiting list from Albert Luthuli Hospital.

For the young lives for whom the surgeries were a success, this triple miracle has changed the outlook of their futures to healthy and fulfilled ones. For their parents, it was just as life-changing.

Rachel shares that the experience of working with all those involved, especially the foundation and the medical staff, was inspiring.

“We are so happy to see how government health care and the foundation are working alongside together to save lives. We hope to be able to find ways in which we can provide more life-saving heart operations.

She adds that organisations like the Children’s Cardiac Foundation have the ability to do so much with the help of more miracle moments.

“We would love to create more awareness about the Children’s Cardiac Foundation of Africa, and the incredible need for more sponsors, so more children can be able to receive the life-saving cardiac surgeries.”

You can find out more about the Children’s Cardiac Foundation of Africa and the Angel Network on their respective websites.

A mother and daughter duo are the unsung fairy godmothers of animals in their community. For seven years, they’ve taken in as many downtrodden friends as possible, and continue to work their magic on healing those struggling.

Durban, South Africa (07 December 2023) — Mother and daughter duo, Laurencia Scott and her mom Elaine are the unsung fairy godmothers of Durban.

When, seven years ago, a chained dog asked for help, hoping someone would understand his unsaid plea, they welcomed the canine into their home — something that would become the beginning of a big mission for their small home.

Over the years, they have been unable to turn away a soul in need. Soon, the space became filled with animal rescues; overflowing with love for creatures in need. It had become a sanctuary for the downtrodden, and a place of purpose for the pair. From nourishing those who had to fight for scraps to healing and rehoming sickly animals, they have worked wonders for so many forgotten lives.

The Cinderella Animal Rescue Durban is true to its name. There are fairy godmothers, lives that have gone from harsh circumstances to a haven, and a spirit of transformation. Now, all they need is a palace (or at least, a bigger space).

As Laurencia shares, despite their boundless love, the limitations of their small space weighed heavily on the duo’s hearts.

Each rescue brought joy but also a realisation—their ability to help was hindered by their tiny quarters. So, they decided to put pride aside and ask for help from their broader community.

“The leap to a larger space seemed like an impossible feat until [we] realised the power of community support,” shares Laurencia.

Throughout the community, their plea for better living conditions for those in their care echoed, “carried on the wings of hope and goodwill,” as the ladies put it.

While they have been inspired by the support, the opportunity to help still stands. Fencing items, wire, posts or tools, are just some ways they can improve their space for the best.

“We humbly ask, please reach out today,” they continue. “Your help will pave the way.”

Anyone who can assist and wants to be part of what could be a fairytale ending is encouraged to contact them at Cinderellaanimalrescuers@outlook.com. You can also keep up with them here.

This has been a huge achievement for the budding performers, a well as the teachers involved.

Meanwhile, in other exciting music news, the University of the Free State’s Choir made big moves on international stages recently after their winning performances at the European Choir Games, which they competed in for the first time.

The Issy Geshen Lamont Home for the Aged, a non-profit based in Durban, has seen a big drop in food donations which help them feed elderly residents – they are rallying the community to help keep bellies full this festive season.

Durban, South Africa (15 November 2023) – The Issy Geshen Lamont Home for the Aged recently reported a decline of 30% in regular food donations, which is becoming increasingly difficult for the Home to provide comprehensive long-term care to sixty-nine vulnerable elders.

World hunger has increased by 150 million since 2019 to 828 million people in 2021 according to the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO). These shocking statistics follow after the Pietermaritzburg Economic Justice and Dignity Group (PMBEJD) shared their latest food basket data indicating that year-on-year food inflation is at 10.6% for a basket of 44 food items that most South African households buy during the month.

“Imagine not being able to provide food for your family. Sadly, hunger and survival are realities for many South Africans. But imagine battling to provide for 69 frail elders who rely on you for a safe home, food and basic provisions. At Issy Geshen, we experience daily how food security can become a major health crisis,” said Guy Levene, Issy Geshen Chairman.

The Issy Geshen Home, located in Lamontville KZN, provides safe accommodation, nutritional meals, transportation, medical and health care services, including 24-hour nursing care and social services to older persons who are frail and can no longer care for themselves. The Home covers 100% of care expenses for elders and relies on the unwavering support of generous donors.

“It is essential for the elders to eat a balanced diet. They are at risk of non-communicable diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, strokes and heart disease. Energy and protein deficiencies lead to changes in body composition and functions, such as impaired muscle function, decreased bone mass, delayed wound healing, reduced cognitive and immune function, and anaemia, which is why the Home works hard to provide daily nutritious meals,” adds Levene.

The aftermath of the pandemic, an economic slowdown, systemic social injustice, rolling blackouts due to load shedding, high unemployment rate, high inflation, and extreme price hikes on food prices have worsened inequality and increased social vulnerability among frail people.

The Issy Geshen Home understand the changes that the current economic climate might have brought about. Yet, amidst these difficulties, they appeal to people and businesses to support them with food and adult nappy donations. No donation is too small. Be a pivotal part of their mission to care for their family of elders.

Edu-Paw’s very own animal hero Sphiwo Colin Gavu stepped in for the Saturday dog training class so that the children and their dogs wouldn’t miss out.

Amanzimtoti, South Africa (03 November 2023) – Animal hero Sphiwo Colin Gavu recently stepped up to help the Edu-Paw team and he is being honoured for going above and beyond! Sphiwo has been at Edu-Paw for the past eight years, volunteering his time to help in every way.

Edu-Paw runs an eight-week Canine Care Programme that guides 12 children and their beloved dogs through obedience training and helps build strong bonds between the children and pets. These classes are usually run by Precious and Snethemba but neither could get to the Amanzimtoti SPCA recently so Sphiwo stepped in.

The Edu-Paw programmes are run through the Amanzimtoti SPCA. They work with children from surrounding communities. The work being done through the organisation helps children learn compassion for animals and leads entire communities to shift and prevent abuse and neglect of animals.

Sphiwo usually runs the Sidewalk Programme outside the gate, dealing with the children who come through for assistance with their dogs on a Saturday morning. However, it became clear to the team that Sphiwo is also a talented teacher, taking over the structured class with ease!

When each child starts in the Canine Care Programme, their dogs are vaccinated, sterilised if needed and dewormed. They are given a collar, lead, bed, blankets, dog food and all the tools needed to raise and care for a dog.

Every week, the team feeds each of the dogs and gives the children and volunteers a juice and snack. With the help of donors, they are able to continue this incredible community service. You can reach out to Edu-Paw via Facebook to lend a helping hand.
