Some heroes wear swimming caps! A group of grade 5 girls from St Cyprian’s School rallied together for a freezing Robben Island Crossing relay, all to raise funds for hatchling turtles. Here’s what they achieved:

Cape Town, South Africa (20 April, 2023) — A team of grade 5 girls from St Cyprian’s School braved icy waters in a Robben Island Crossing relay yesterday. The oceans might have been cold, but their endeavour was beyond heart-warming.

By no means a leisurely swim, the young girls braved it out for a cause smaller than themselves. After being inspired by their marine life studies at school, they realised that their friends in the ocean are being impacted daily.

Their response was to do something meaningful for sea life, and so they turned to the great blue.

With the goal to make the hatchling season a happier one, the girls decided to back the baby turtles and raise funds for the Two Oceans Aquarium to support the hatchlings on their journey to rehabilitation.

People from Cape Town and beyond saw the vision, and soon the goal of R18 000 was surpassed with the three relay teams raising R34 855 to date!

Engulfed in cheer, Corrin Holgate told GoodThingsGuy that the whole grade was supporting the swimmers on their inspired adventure, and travelled with them to the beach to see them through.

Not to mention, their grade 5 teacher, Vicky Hyland might win teacher of the year for diving into the journey with them.

Kathryn Nurse of FUNdamental Swimming, a swimming coach who’s long inspired and believed in the girls shared:

“They swam with seals, were stung by jellyfish and experienced bad chafe. They powered through freezing, dark water and took turns being strong for one another. This is GIRL POWER. This is the future.”

We and the sea couldn’t be more proud of the girls, who will now be able to sponsor more than one hatchling per class.
