Welcome to South Africa… where a Hippo also gets a midnight snack from the local Petrol Station!

St Lucia, South Africa (24 February 2020) – A Hippopotamus either ran out of petrol or was desperately looking for a chomp on Sunday night as the animal made its way into a local petrol station in St Lucia.

But this is not an uncommon sight for locals who live in the area as hippos enjoy a little trot around town every now and then.

“They walk all over in St Lucia and are free to roam where they want. All visitors and people who live here know about the Hippos and keep a safe distance.” – Anneri Jubilius

St Lucia is a settlement in Umkhanyakude District Municipality in the KwaZulu-Natal province of South Africa. The small town is mainly a hub for the Greater St Lucia Wetlands Park which is undoubtedly the largest Hippo Population in South Africa.

The hippo groups occur in the area of iSimangaliso Wetland Park, and St Lucia is situated in the heart of this Hippo Land.

“It is estimated that 800 Hippos roam the area and yes we get to see them regularly. Not only in the Estuary but in Town and in the residential areas on a regular basis.”
