The South African postal service is hot and cold; Funda Ninja shared a lost and found story after a donation went missing in the post.

Howick, South Africa (08 February 2024) – Funda Nenja felt relief this week when a parcel that had been missing since July 2023, had turned up at the Howick Post Office. They shared that a donor in Ireland had sent a parcel filled with donations for dogs in need and their little owners; she had popped the parcel into her local post, not knowing that the system was not so functional in South Africa.

Many South Africans rely on private courier services to get their goods from A to B; it has become the standard way of life. But for people who do not live here, the postal service is the standard.

Thankfully, in this case, albeit rather delayed, the parcel turned up. And all thanks to a helpful human who shared on a community group that there were several organisations with post waiting for collection at the Howick Post Office.

A lost and found story.

Those of us living in South Africa know that our local postal service is shocking, so we prefer to use private courier services. Overseas donors, unfortunately, are not always aware of the limitations of our Post Office. One such person is Eileen Thomas, in Ireland, who posted us a parcel of goodies in July 2023, all in good faith. When Eileen informed us of the donation sent our way, our hearts sank as we had low expectations of ever receiving it.

Last week, on one of our local community Facebook groups, a kind person posted a list of people and organisations who had unclaimed parcels waiting to be collected from the Howick Post Office. Imagine our surprise to see Funda Nenja on the list.

Yesterday we collected the parcel and were delighted to see that it was Eileen’s parcel finally in our hands 7 months after she posted it from Galway, Ireland!

Sjoe. What a journey.
