The South African Astronomical Observatory’s (SAAO) Open Nights is a massive hit in Cape Town, and that seems to be the trend going into 2024, too!

Cape Town, South Africa (11 February 2024) – It is a new year, which means a new chance to experience a night at the South African Astronomical Observatory (SAAO). The observatory shares detailed information on their night tours, which is fascinating and is proving to be a fun night out for Capetonians and tourists alike.

Already, the dates released each month, sell out really fast! The event is free to the public; however, a ticketing system is in place to ensure every seat is allocated to an eager learner. This year, the Open Nights will occur on the 2nd and 4th Saturday of each month at 8 pm.

Each time the new dates are announced, they are quickly booked within hours of opening each show. This is due to the engaging and exciting talks by the scientists and astronomers conducting research at the facility.

According to the website, SAAO was founded in 1820 and is the national centre for optical and infrared astronomy in South Africa. Its primary role is to conduct fundamental research in astronomy and astrophysics by providing a world-class facility to scientists. The SAAO also promotes astronomy and astrophysics in Southern Africa by sharing research findings and discoveries and participating in outreach activities to enthuse citizens about physics and astronomy.

The Cape Town Observatory is the one people can access easily as it is found just outside the city centre. The observatory plays host to many events, and people are encouraged to visit to learn more about the research being done in South Africa.

You can book your tickets here; note the tickets are free; the booking system is merely to ensure every seat is allocated to someone. You can, however, make a R5 donation toward the programme on the booking portal.
