After the global community made it clear that LEGO braille bricks should be accessible to as many people as possible, the dream has finally become a reality.
Global (29 August 2023) — A world where more visually impaired children and people can enjoy building LEGO creations has become closer to reality thanks to the toy company’s recent announcement that LEGO braille bricks are on virtual shelves for the first time ever.
This comes after LEGO made moves in 2020 to distribute braille bricks for free to organisations and schools that focused on children with visual impairments.
The educational kits became such a hit, linked to so much positivity beyond learning skills alone, that people from all over the world (from carers to parents and educators) pushed for the bricks to become widely available for home use.
As Rasmus Løgstrup, LEGO Group Lead Designer on LEGO Braille Bricks shared:
“We’ve been inundated with thousands of requests to make them more widely available, so we just knew we had to make it happen!”
The bricks were created with specific colourways in mind for people with low vision and have braille as well as printed letters, numbers and symbols on them so that people across the visual spectrum can learn braille.
“For blind and partially sighted children, and adults for that matter, it makes all the difference if they can share their journey of learning braille with the people they love the most. For the blind community, braille is not just literacy, it’s our entry to independence and inclusion into this world, and to have LEGO Braille Bricks made available for the wider public is a massive step forward to ensuring more children will want to learn braille in the first place.”—Martine Abel-Williamson, World Blind Union President.
