Lloyisa Gijana wrote a prayer in isiXhosa in support of survivors of gender-based violence and the Stellenbosch University Choir performed it beautifully!
Stellenbosch, South Africa (29 November 2023) – With 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence in full swing, from the 25th of November to the 10th of December, everyone is adding their voices to the conversation. Lloyiso Gijana wrote an isiXhosa prayer which was performed by the Stellenbosch University Choir. The prayer is in support of victims of Gender-Based Violence.
Lloyiso is having quite the phenomenal music year, having joined Martin Garrix in a new song earlier this year, and now adding this powerful prayer to his repertoire. He urges men to stop acts of violence, to listen.
“Lloyiso Gijana wrote this isiXhosa prayer to add his voice in support of victims of Gender-Based Violence.
Men, listen. Stop the acts of violence – women are in danger.
Our women are weeping.”
The Stellenbosch University Choir was founded in 1936 under the baton of William Morris. After him, various conductors established the ensemble as an influential South African choir.
The Choir, an ensemble of approximately 80 – 100 voices, has won international acclaim through performances, concert tours, and participation in prestigious festivals and competitions.
And only a few of the students in the group actually study music! The University choir is one of the most celebrated in South Africa.
This performance left us feeling quite emotional. While the performance is beautiful and awe-inspiring, it is equally powerful and the message is vitally important.
Take a listen to the beautiful prayer below.
