South Africa’s Keith Boyd (Rainbow Runner) signed up for a mammoth ‘jog’ last year in July—the Cape to Cairo trek. With thousands of kilometres behind him, legs that are tired but a heart that’s determined, he is closer to Egypt than ever before, and still sharing words of positivity and insight along the way:

Sudan (05 March 2024) — South Africa’s Rainbow Runner Keith Boyd embarked on a mammoth jog in July last year after he left Cape Town on the long road to Cairo.

With conversations around election season in full swing in our home country, Keith’s reason for being on this continental odyssey becomes even more relevant. He became the Rainbow Runner to quite literally go the extra mile in encouraging active citizenship and voter participation (not for any single political party but rather the ethos of democracy), especially for young people.

And despite the many turns his path has taken (including being held at gun point en-route to the finish line) it’s a message he’s still willing to risk it all for.

But the end is near for the Rainbow Runner who had dusted well over 7000 kilometres in February. With a resilient heart, Keith has made it to Sudan, Egypt’s border country.

During Keith’s travels, he has been his followers’ eyes and ears on what other African countries are dealing with.

“The deepest challenges aren’t physical. They’re what I’ve witnessed in the people and societies they live in,” he shared.

With a willingness to discover as his guide, Keith is bringing an even bigger message to those who know of his trek—perspective. Lessons we can learn from other cultures, and how this run isn’t about one person or one dream of active citizenship, but a nation and a continent.

While the end dates for Keith’s run are not set in stone, his last update tapped in on day 217. He praised the Sudanese people for having “kindness of the highest order” and urged people to send prayers for the war they are facing.

Keith’s initial target was to finish the Rainbow Run in 280 days which could also set a world record. But even without world records, the dedication he’s made to South Africa’s future by encouraging people in the most epic way to remember that we can shape this future is an achievement worth its weight in accolades.

All the best for the final pushes Keith! You can keep up with his journey here.

David Case and the Pirates Running Club are at it again, this time through the Western Cape! David’s initiative, ‘1000 Kays of Caring’ is exactly what it sounds like: 1000 kilometres of care that hopes to help Grabouw’s most disadvantaged people:

Western Cape, South Africa (01 March 2024) — This week, we’ve been so proud of South African runners across the country who, with different initiatives and distances in mind, have all signed up to put their legs to work for community impact. In some parts of the country, a duo are gearing up to make a community food garden possible by virtue of their leg power. In other parts, 10 kilometres a day is slowly but surely hoping to make a difference in underprivileged students’ education. But, there is yet another ‘making those kilometres count’ initiative in our midst—’1000 Kays of Caring’—and this time the focus is on Grabouw’s most disadvantaged people.

A fundraising adventure led by David Case, ‘1000 Kays of Caring’ is a 21-day trek through the Western Cape. Each day, 48 kilometres is the goal, with David and the Pirates Road Running Club sweating their hearts out to make the ‘Kays of Caring’ a success.

This is not David’s first rodeo for the long haul or kindness. In 2019, David and the Pirates tackled ‘500 Kays for Kids’—500 kilometres for Childline! It was an incredible effort that saw other runners join the charge, and one that David decided it was not only something worth replicating, but doubling.

Focusing on Siphila Sonke, a Grabouw charity that focuses on the chronically ill and unemployed living in the most heart-wrenching circumstances, ‘1000 Kays of Care’ is dedicated to their upliftment.

All runners have organised their own transportation and costs, with any funds raised heading solely to Siphila Sonke. This charity relies completely on donations, and the runners’ hopes are high that their adventure will make a difference and raise awareness.

If you can’t lend your legs to the cause, follow and support the initiative on Instagram! While their donation platform isn’t live yet, you can still message the initiative platform directly to find out about adding your care to the kilometres.

Last year, Chad Markgraaf signed up to run 100 marathons in 100 days for his friend fighting cancer. Now, he’s teamed up with Dayne Smith for ‘1000 Beyond Running’—10 km for 100 consecutive days to help underprivileged children’s education essentials!

Johannesburg (27 February 2024) — Another dynamic duo is on a mission to create positive change by making many kilometres count! While Ruth Boshoff and Debbi De Waal are preparing to put their legs to work to help fund a community food garden in the Western Cape (‘Greyton to Gardens’), in other parts of South Africa, Dayne Smith and Chad Markraaf have already set to the task of tekkies with their initiative ‘1000 Beyond Running’.

If the name rings a bell, Chad Markgraaf made headlines last year for running ‘100 marathons in 100 days’ to help a friend fight skin cancer’s financial challenges. It was a brilliant effort and one that has paved the way for Chad to get involved in more positive impact efforts in South Africa.

This year, Chad and Dayne have teamed up to tackle 10 kilometres for 100 days to raise funds to help underprivileged children along their educational journeys. At the end of the commitment, the two hope to have completed 1000 kilometres of effort for TeachBeyond—an education non-profit organisation!

Dayne, the National Director of TeachBeyond tells Good Things Guy that as of yesterday, 57 consecutive days have already been completed. That’s a whopping distance of 570 kilometres done and dusted! If we consider that some of South Africa’s most revered marathons like the Two Oceans Ultra Marathon (56 kilometres) and the Comrades (just over 87 kilometres) are some of the most intense exercises of endurance for legs to handle; the excitement around their chopped up runs of resilience becomes even more exciting.

Says Dayne of ‘1000 Beyond Running’:

“The primary objective of the campaign is to raise R100,000 to support the education of underprivileged children and provide essential educational services. We are thrilled to report that, thanks to the incredible support from individuals and organisations…[we] have already raised approximately R33,000, bringing us one step closer to achieving our goal.

“Our dedication is not only reflected in the distance we have covered but also in the positive impact they have already made in the lives of those we aim to support. The funds raised so far are contributing directly to providing educational opportunities and services for underprivileged children.”

Anyone who is keen to get the pair closer to their closing goal can learn more via info@teachbeyond.co.za!

“Together, we can make education accessible to all and create a lasting impact on the lives of underprivileged children.”—Dayne Smith.

Two incredible women are lacing up their takkies once again for a marathon mission, this time to help fund a community garden that will help people in need on their journey to independence!

Western Cape, South Africa (26 February 2024) — Two incredible women who are no strangers to giving their marathon missions even more meaning are lacing up their takkies once again—this time to fund a community garden!

Ruth Boshoff and Debbi De Waal have May marked on their calendars where they will tackle 42kms over 2 days. There, the journey will wind them through the Sonderend Mountains, which Greyton and Genadendal residents will know well. Aptly, their fundraising mission is called ‘Greyton to Gardens’!

Beyond the breathtaking scenery and the adrenaline of endurance, Ruth and Debbi’s May marathon serves a very important purpose, just like their Senecio run saw last year. Then, the powerhouse duo raised almost R20,000 for people with disabilities.

For their upcoming run the ladies will set their sights on R20,000 once again; this time for a food garden for community development organisation Taste+See—a mentorship that began as a feeding scheme but now prides itself as a ‘hand up’ organisation focused on equipping people in need with the skills for financial independence holistically.

Taste+See—who are based in Helderberg, Somerset West—hope to secure a small piece of land for their own food garden, which will provide not only nourishment and a sense of food security but also a purpose and a sense of responsibility for the community.

You can support Ruth and Debbi’s big run ‘Greyton for Gardens’ (and ultimately a patch of hope for members of the Helderberg community) by emailing here or donating to Taste + See using the details below.

Nontuthuko Mgabhi has already raised over R3 million in her lifetime for children and schools who most need it. Now, she’s setting to task again for a massive challenge of 520kms for 520 pairs of school shoes!

Richards Bay, South Africa (23 February 2024) — Nontuthuko ‘Nontu’ Mgabhi is a champion of two incredible endeavours—ultramarathons and making sure rural children have the essentials!

Putting her own feet to task for others ample times (She is the first female from Africa to run 7 marathons on 7 continents in 7 consecutive days) Nontu has successfully raised over R3 million to provide so many learners facing poverty with the essentials they need to feel dignified and encouraged at school.

Her passion has paved the path for building classrooms, renovating schools, and providing books and food, as well as the always essential and trajectory-shifting—school shoes.

Last year, Nontu hit the ground running at the Ultra ASIA 160km Race in Vietnam where she came second in the women’s division and fourth overall. But, regardless of all her achievements, her biggest win by far is being able to make a difference in the life of a school child who needs it most.

Nontu is back at it again in 2024 and will be focusing on a whopping 520km ultramarathon, The Track Namibia, scheduled for 15-24 May. 520kms for 520 pairs of school shoes, her endeavour will take her on a 10-day journey through the Valley of the Moon, the tropic of Capricorn and the Sesriem and Sossusvlei Dunes.

For the experienced long-distance runner, this will be a new kind of challenge given the extreme distance. But, it’s one well worth it, given the underprivileged children in KwaZulu-Natal who will get to walk in school shoes that say, ‘Someone went all the extra miles for me’.

“I believe in giving back, I am grateful that I am able to give back through my passion: a love of running, travel and nature. It is  wonderful to live a life that is authentic with impact. To prepare for these races, although challenging, is not a chore for me—it is a privilege to get to do this. I have the health and means to do it.”—Nontuthuko Mgabhi.

Those looking to support Nontu on yet another impactful adventure can get in touch with her on nontu.mgabhi@icloud.com!

In a series of races where trailblazers took to the mountains with all kinds of achievements in mind, Friends of Table Mountain were celebrated with perhaps the biggest win of all:

Cape Town, South Africa (27 November 2023) – Last week saw runners and mountain lovers unite for the Ultra-Trail Cape Town (UTCT) stretches. All competitors (both seasoned and rookies) had their own purpose for conquering what, for some, meant almost two days’ worth of racing and hundreds of kilometres done and dusted.

But, there is one group of people who earned what is perhaps the biggest win of all, and they go by ‘Friends of Table Mountain’.

The Friends of Table Mountain earned the Service Award at the UTCT—a huge nod considering that the entire series of races would not be possible without their constant care for the trails everyone gets to enjoy before, during and beyond events like the UTCT.

A force of nature’s fiercest friends, the lobby group are the unsung eyes and ears of the mountain who dedicate themselves to making sure trails are free from alien vegetation, remain in the best possible condition and that footpaths are cleared, cared for and safe.

The NPO also work with the SANParks Honorary Rangers who provide important oversight for all those who roll up their sleeves to keep Table Mountain National Park the beacon of public joy it’s loved across the world as.

The Service Award embodies so much more than those who made the races as beautiful as they were daunting, but the spirit of a community determined to take matters into their own hands.

However, FOTM’s achievement is also a nod to what can be done with a little more help from their friends through national support. In a recent statement by Chairperson Andy Davies, concerns about financial support for Table Mountain National Park were shared.

“FOTM’s requests for the latest income and expenditure reports from SANParks have been ignored. However, through parliamentary channels we have been informed that for the 2022/23 financial year, TMNP made a remarkably good income of R298m – but that it only spent R97m on TMNP (a significant profit margin of 207%). FOTM also takes note that TMNP’s operating budget/expenditure decreased by 11.5% in real terms compared to 2018/19.
The statement furthered:
“FOTM understands TMNP’s profits need to be shared amongst other parks that see a fraction of TMNP’s tourism – but there is now an urgent need to support TMNP regarding the current crime wave. Bearing in mind the surge in crime and its very negative impact on Cape Town tourism, FOTM finds it unacceptable that SANParks head office is not prepared to commit more funding to TMNP.
“Our demand to Minister Barbara Creecy, the SANParks board and executives is very simple: please prioritize the care of TMNP and provide the local management team with the resources they so desperately need.”

The Power of Pink prevailed again after over 1000 people took to Rosebank to join the same team in their support of Breast Cancer awareness. All in all, R50 000 was donated to CANSA!

Rosebank, South Africa (17 November 2023) — On a bold morning at the end of October, over 1000 people turned the streets of Rosebank pink with purpose.

Together, in an explosion of the colour symbolic of Breast Cancer support, tutus and running shoes were at the ready and soon the stretch from Bath Avenue had begun.

The journey was 5 kilometres, but went a long way. The special part about running for a reason is that the competition isn’t the person next to you, but rather the challenge you are trying to soothe and support for someone else. Everyone in the crowd is on the same team, sharing the same goal: to show up, raise as much awareness and fundraise with all your might for your fellow South African sisters who are fighting one of the toughest fights.

These efforts were also a marvel for anyone on the outside looking in to be inspired by as the group energy, unity and celebration of what is worth fighting for lit up the suburb.

Once complete, R50 000 was donated tothe Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA) by the event’s partner; marking a powerful end to a very busy Breast Cancer Awareness Month for the organisation.

A man has dedicated an epic run of 100 km, that’ll cross mountains, to a little cancer fighter’s project which makes sure cuddles, hope and strength continue uplifting children facing health battles in South Africa.

Cape Town, South Africa (09 November 2023) — After being disheartened when a marathon didn’t go as planned, the opportunity to tackle an even bigger race and give it an even greater purpose came about. 100km across mountains takes a lot, but for Fourie Rossouw, it’ll give even more to a project that helps children summit their own mountain-like challenges.

Earlier this year, Zhara’s Little Lamb Project hopped onto GTG’s radar of extra special humans. Since we learned of cancer warrior Zhara Du Toit’s ambitious project that has seen knitted and crocheted lambs fill up spaces in young hearts fighting health battles across the country, love has been tangible. Children have felt less alone. And lamb plush toys have become symbols of how much a small act of kindness can mean.

Now, someone else is lacing up to go the extra mile for the lambs to make sure that they continue snuggling up to the little fighters who need them. This after Fourie Rossouw’s initial 75km race from Franschhoek to Stellenbosch over mountain terrain didn’t go according to plan after getting sick.

“In the backseat of the Uber back to the parking lot at the jump-off, I was licking my wounds like a ‘pavement special’ street burglary,” he shared.

A friend of Zhara’s family, the mountain that she and her family have had to climb puts things into perspective for Fourie.

“While I’m sitting and licking, I’m thinking of my friends whose little girl also has a mountain to climb… Just the thought of her and her parents rips me out of my self-pity. A few times through the course of the afternoon I want to marinate myself in my disappointment, but then I think again about her (and so many others) whose life path is significantly more challenging than a DNF on a nice mountain adventure in Stellenbosch. “

So, when Zhara’s father Johan Du Toit encouraged Fourie to enter one of the last big races of the year (the RMB Ultra-trail) and run it with Zhara as inspiration, Fourie accepted the challenge.

The kilometres ahead will see him cross the tough terrain of Table Mountain as part of the away jump of the ultra trail, set for 25 November. With each kilometre he puts behind him, he edges closer to his fundraising goals for Zhara’s Little Lambs so that more love and soft sidekicks can go around.

“So now I ask you, what’s your mountain and what’s your 100?” Fourie asked others, reminding us all that while we might not be able to conquer a mountain for another, we can certainly make the journey smoother.

Keith Boyd, South Africa’s determined Rainbow Runner who set off from Cape Town to Cairo on foot earlier this year, has reached his 3,700km mark, putting him in line to break a world record! However, Keith’s journey is about so much more than breaking records:

Africa (26 October 2023) — Earlier this year, Keith Boyd (AKA, ‘Rainbow Runner’) began putting one foot in front of the other to inspire more active citizenship in South Africa. Determined to trek from the tip of Africa all the way to Cairo, Keith’s endurance and legs of steel have already brought him to a significant milestone.

The Rainbow Runner’s 11,000-kilometre journey has already reached its 3,700km mark. This means he is well-positioned to reach Cairo in less than his anticipated time!

Initially, Keith aimed to reach Egypt’s gem in 280 days (the current world record is 318 days), but if he keeps pace, he will likely get there in just 260 days.

The Rainbow Runner’s ‘Why’

In South Africa, voter apathy is all too apparent. But, the Rainbow Runner hopes his quest will inspire South Africans (especially the youth) to shift their mindsets from ‘why should I vote’ to ‘how can I not’.

Together with his NPO Rainbow Leaders, the big finish line beyond Cairo is increased voter participation. This is not in affiliation with any political party, but rather the drive for public agency.

As Wendy Matthee of Rainbow Leaders shares:

“Keith’s dedication to this cause speaks volumes. He believes that youth voting is the key to mitigating unemployment, poverty, and inequality in South Africa.

“By encouraging responsible leadership through youth engagement, he hopes to create a brighter future for his nation.”

And, every step he takes also raises funds for the Rainbow Leaders Vote Education Programme; an initiative aimed at empowering South Africa’s youth through civic education to build the foundations of active citizenship.

Beyond incredible purpose, Keith has also experienced other great opportunities en route.

One of them saw him spend time with Antoinette Sithole, the older sister of Hector Pieterson, who presently serves as an inspirational speaker and moral leader within her community.

He has also met with various schools and orphanages to spread his message as he continues to walk the walk (even with a problematic right knee and left ankle).

Of these physical stress factors, the Rainbow Runner has adapted with the help of his team by changing shoes throughout the day so he can beat on and continue to make South Africa enormously proud.

The Comrades Charities List recently got an update for its next 3-year cycle, with two new charities added, including wildlife heroes, SANParks Honorary Rangers!

South Africa (18 October 2023) — The Comrades Marathon might be one of the toughest marathons in the world (unless you consider 90-odd kilometres casual), but it also happens to lend itself to humanity at its softest. This is strikingly apparent not just in the moments of kindness shared between racers and supporters, but also through the Comrades Charities focus, which recently got an update!

For the upcoming race cycles (2024, 2025 and 2026) the Comrades Marathon Association has announced its official charities. These will be the focus of the Amabeadiebeadi Charity Drive which has raised over R71 million since it began 27 years ago.

If you wondered why as many people put themselves through the gruelling feat of chasing pavements at the Comrades level, the answer is usually a sense of purpose.

Sometimes, purpose meets people at individual levels; the drive to prove yourself, to love what you can achieve and to feel a sense of indescribable pride. Other times, it lies in community; the opportunity to create extraordinary change by doing something well out of the ordinary.

The Comrades Charities List helps connect different realms of social impact with those ready to enact a great, gruelling adventure.

Most of the charities are existing charities, while place for two newer charities was also made thanks to the incredible addition of South African Parks Honorary Rangers and Childline KwaZulu-Natal.

SANParks Honorary Rangers are the only charity on the list whose primary focus is conservation efforts, making their mention a big win for South Africa’s wildlife and all those who contribute toward its care.

However, all of the charities make a big difference in their respective realms and deserve as much celebration (and maybe their own caduceus trophies) as the future runners who will fuel their missions further.

And the Official Charities Are:

  • Community Chest of Durban and Pietermaritzburg
  • Childhood Cancer Foundation
  • Childline KZN
  • Hillcrest Aids Centre Trust
  • Rise Against Hunger Africa
  • South African Parks Honorary Rangers
