A lady donated bags filled with filling ingredients, each capable of providing a warm meal for four people; Charity Begins With Me handed the bags out to some of the youths who regularly visit.

Johannesburg, South Africa (06 June 2023) – The chill is setting in and one-pot meals make it more manageable to put food on the table that is warming and works with loadshedding. For many families, even filling one pot can be tough! Charity Begins With Me received a big donation of “Meals in a Bag” and started handing them out to people in need.

The need is so great that people are trying to do more, with fewer resources. One way this is being accomplished is by making Jars of Hope or a Meal-in-a-Bag. These bags or jars have the power to feed four people and everything they will need, besides water and a pot, is included in the package.

The Jar of Hope or Mean-in-a-Bag concept was started in 2020 when people wanted to help as many as possible. This concept was to help people through the toughest times of the lockdown. Now its still being used because times are still tough for many.

A person can purchase all the needed items for just under R120 and feed multiple families in one go. The meal bag is made up of six simple non-perishable pantry ingredients that make up a meal when water is added. You can add a mixture of rice, pasta, soup mix or split peas, lentils, stock cubes and soup packets. You just need to measure out half a cup of each ingredient and place in a stock cube and soup packet.

Charity Begins With Me received a huge amount of meal bags from an “Aunty Carly”, who just wanted to make sure families supported by the charity have a few warm meals.

Stephen Ferriera started ‘Charity Begins With Me‘ shortly after he was first diagnosed with cancer in 2016. He realised he could do so much more with the life he had left and quickly set up the charity as a way to give back. He ran the charity throughout his chemotherapy treatments, remission and, sadly, his relapse. Whatever battles he faces in his own life, it is those of others that give him the strength to push through.

Working with the local community has become a huge part of Stephen’s life and making sure everyone has equal opportunity, even more so. Times are tough and he is seeing it first-hand, on the ground.

This concept can be shared with any charity that works with people in need. So if you would like to take up the cause, you can simply reach out to your nearest charity and donate them. Just be sure to label what has been placed inside the bag so should there be any dietary restrictions, people can be aware.
