An afternoon to just be children, to leave worries behind and indulge in the sugary delights of gingerbread cookies was what was in store for a group of street children.
Marlboro Gardens, South Africa (20 February 2024) – A soup kitchen based in Marlboro Gardens received a donation of 90 sets of DIY gingerbread kits which they used to bring joy to street children. The donation, facilitated by The Angel Network, came from Kitchenique, a retailer in northern Johannesburg.
The Angel Network works as a management organisation partnering with smaller organisations in need of funding and support. They rally their networks for help and then provide the aid needed to support smaller organisations. The organisation also supports individuals when they need it most.
The organisation has spent the last few years feeding millions of South Africans and foreign nationals by supplying food parcels, stocking soup kitchen pantries and supplying funding to smaller organisations working on the ground in the poorest communities in South Africa.
Their continued support through feeding programmes has meant many children were able to eat each day, that men and women had the strength to face each unknown and that those who were sick had the strength to pull through and recover.
The Angel Network not only helps sustain feeding schemes, but they have also continued their efforts to help wherever needed. They educate, uplift and upskill people too!
Through 100 soup kitchens, the Angel Network is able to feed 300,000 people every month. The work they do is invaluable and goes a long way toward combatting hunger in South Africa.
This gingerbread donation gave a group of children who live on the streets, an afternoon to just be children. To indulge in fun and to enjoy a sweet treat.
Speaking to Glynne Wolman, she shared that the children felt seen and thought of.
The soup kitchen, Vuko Skhokho, is run daily to aid people in Alexandra. They went into the streets to encourage the children to join them. The soup kitchen is run by Hella Ledwaba and Hansraj Mitha.
The team run the kitchen and also started a food garden this year, in the hope of adding fresh foods from the garden to meals served in the community.
