So many office items ended up as waste or in landfills, during and after the pandemic. But what would these items look like if instead, they had a second chance at life? The upcoming UPCYCLE exhibition is gearing up to give us a look:

Cape Town, South Africa (05 March 2024) — The spaces we work in have changed greatly in the past four years. But, so has our relationship with the biggest space of all—the planet we call home. Merging these two ideas and inviting us all to be freely inspired by them, is the UPCYCLE Exhibition, set to pop up in Cape Town next month.

The exhibition’s organisers believe that the working world has massive potential to join in on the circularity movement—ie: the upcycling movement which gives waste a chance to be reworked into treasure.

Reconfiguration of the workspace in the post-Covid world has led to a mounting tide of discarded office equipment and furniture that either lazes around in storage, ends up on an over-supplied second-hand market, or worse—in landfill.

But, with clever designers and artists playing a critical role in imagining new possibilities for the things that fill up our spaces, hopes are hot that creative change can make an important dent in influencing the corporate world to get on board with the conscious world.

The UPCYCLE exhibition then, is on a mission to tackle the bigger issues of sustainability and regenerative design through the vehicle of unbounded creativity. Not limited by function and challenged to create a thought-provoking spectacle that will ignite powerful conversation, a select group of designers and artists have been tasked with breathing bold new life into discarded office equipment and furniture pieces.

Among the exhibition’s participants are Congolese artist Patrick Bongoy, sisters Viveka and Rucita Vassen of Ananta Design Studio, Nisha and Justus van der Hoven of Hoven Design, Laurie Wiid of Wiid Design, Amaury Watine, who is the Creativity and Innovation Director Tétris EMEA, Adrian Davidson.

The exhibition will be open to the public at Makers Landing at V&A Waterfront on 19 and 20 April 2024. On Friday 19 April, design students will be welcomed for a special student-focused day, and on Saturday 20 April there will be a free curated walkabout with the artists and designers at 11h00.

Get ready to explore the future of the workspace!

  • Date: 19-20 April 2024
  • Venue: Makers Landing, V&A Waterfront, Cape Town
  • Opening hours: 10h00-21h00, Friday-Saturday
  • Cost:  Entrance to the exhibition and Makers Landing is free
  • Parking: Secure paid parking is available at Makers Landing

A sold-out Baxter theatre signalled a year of exciting events for Opera UCT—including the opportunity to stage a world premiere, celebrating a student who was selected for an international scholarship, and brighter bursary opportunities!

Cape Town, South Africa (29 February 2024) – Opera UCT’s 2024 season launch presented a varied programme that signalled a year ahead full of good news, including world firsts, international collaborations, and student achievements.

To a packed Baxter theatre, South Africa’s oldest opera performing and training institution beautifully defended its reputation as a source for some of the most respected and successful operatic performers in the world today, and set the stage for what is to come!

Opera UCT’s director, pianist and conductor, Professor Jeremy Silver, led a line-up of performances that clearly demonstrated the breadth and depth of talent the school has on tap.

Professor Silver remarked:

“Our activities also provide Cape Town’s arts scene with world-class operatic performances of which we can all be proud, and I am delighted that Opera UCT’s international status has ensured that this year, we have been chosen as the production partner for some important and seminal works, which we look forward to sharing with audiences of all ages.”

A Symphony of Good News!

Performances To Make South Africa Proud

Opera UCT has been selected to stage the world premiere of an important and hitherto lost opera, Donizetti’s Dalinda, a production that will be led by Italian director William Costabile Cisco and costume design by Letiticia Parvoleta Ivanova set to take place in early September.

Silver says: “This is a great honour for Opera UCT and South Africa and is also an exceptional opportunity for our young singers, as the eyes of the arts world will be upon us when we stage this production in September, which is the cornerstone of our 2024 season.”

On the cards for later in the year as part of Opera UCT’s packed schedule, Silver teased the audience with hints of a fully staged production under the inspiring creative direction of a conductor and director from the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, as to a new Distinguished Alumni Recital Series that will take place during the season ahead.

The 2024 diary also includes the third annual Aviva Pelham Operetta Competition and the FMR Bursary Award Classical Instrumental and Vocal Finals, a competition that celebrates the very best of classical, jazz, and African music thanks to the Rolf-Stephan Nussbaum Foundation.

Exciting News for Students

In addition to the core academic programme that has ensured graduates are welcomed the world over, Opera UCT will host a series of masterclasses, competitions, and international residencies, which contribute to the school and production house’s international standing and success.

The K T Wong Foundation has also established a new bursary programme for 2024, which assists aspiring graduate artists as they establish their professional careers.  The first recipient of this generous bursary is Opera UCT tenor, Luvo Maranti, who was also a finalist in Plácido Domingo’s Operalia competition held in Cape Town in 2023.

Molly Dzangare’s Achievement

Also, and yet more exciting news, is the announcement that UCT student soprano Molly Dzangare, has been awarded an Eva Kleinitz Opera Europa Scholarship, having been selected from more than 500 global applicants.

Encore!

Three book launches and a further new addition to the line-up are also planned for 2024, and in April, following a packed March programme that includes several free concerts, Opera UCT will stage a large-scale performance complete with the UCT Symphony Orchestra of a concert entitled, ‘The Sound of Freedom’.

Opera UCT’s staging of productions is not only an opportunity for audiences to lose themselves in the musical mastery of storytelling but also a mechanism to generate funds. These monies go towards ensuring students get valuable performance experience and help to bring international masters in opera and stage to South Africa to share their expertise with the school.

Donations and support can be channelled through the Opera Endowment Fund!

Elders part of NOAH recently got treated to a fabulous day of creativity as part of the International Public Art Festival’s return to Cape Town!

Cape Town, South Africa (26 February 2024)— Elders part of NOAH (Neighbourhood Old Age Homes), a non-profit organisation that gives senior citizens a new lease on purpose with a unique sense of community and skills-sharing, recently got to have an art day as part of the International Public Arts Festival‘s run in Cape Town.

As the biggest street art festival on the continent where new murals by arts, both local and international, become part of the City of Cape Town’s urban fabric, it’s always an exciting time when IPAF comes to town. But wedged between the breathtaking murals and their special messages of impact are public art opportunities and moments of magic—just like the one the NOAH elders recently enjoyed.

Setting aside a day at the Company Gardens, elders got to enjoy their time being creative and enthralled with skills many might not have touched on for years. The Senior Workshop saw 12 NOAH elders get to enjoy the time together, brushed in paint and joy—something that made the whole energy of the International Public Art Festival that much more locally enriching.

There are hundreds of NOAH members who rely on the non-profit who have taken a different approach to life in the sunset years. Operating in six Cape Town communities, residents often come from tough situations such as neglect and unaffordable living circumstances as social pensioners. Through the communal houses affectionately referred to as Digs, the elders are trained with ABCD skills (Asset Based Community Development) where they can use their skills and talents, help co-manage social enterprises and partake in programmes like the Happiness Programme (a garden project, knitting circles, candle and soap making and events).

Here’s to more programmes that benefit the elderly, and more effort on reshaping how we see retirement!

South Africa is readying its creative forces to put on a thought-provoking showcase that’ll spotlight the concept of home and reconnection at the renowned International Art Exhibition—La Biennale di Venezia!

Global (23 February 2024) — The 60th International Art Exhibition, La Biennale di Venezia, is around the corner and South Africa is readying its creative forces to put on a thought-provoking showcase centred around a theme both pensive and close to home.

Under the overarching International Art Exhibition’s theme ‘Foreigners Everywhere/ ‘Strainer Ovunque’, the South African Pavilion will be presenting a showcase titled ‘Quiet Ground’. Led by think and do tank non-profit, the Institute for Creative Repair and curated by senior lecturer and curator of African and African Diaspora, Dr Portia Malatjie, the message here is one of how hope can grow from hardships against the backdrop of feeling foreign in your own home.

‘Quiet Ground’ will also spotlight a fresh commission and sound installation ‘Dinokana’ by art duo MADEYOULOOK (Molemo Moiloa and Nate Mokgotho).

With these brilliant creative minds behind the steering wheel, South Africa’s showcase will take the International Art Exhibition on a journey as to how the possibilities of individual and collective repair can grow from the spaces of displacement, as well as how those who are dispossessed reconnect with the land through experiences like land rehabilitation.

The Institute of Creative Repair’s mission is to heal people, communities and institutions through art, heritage and culture. As such, Quiet Ground will speak to re-rooting South Africa despite dispossession and finding solace in our homeland despite historical and present disconnection.

Through three art pillars (Art in South Africa, The Land as Classroom, and notions of Repair through Art), they showcase a message that may be rooted in hardship but can grow into hope. Although it will be presented to the world, it is largely a message for South Africa.

The La Biennale di Venecia will kickstart on 20 April and run all the way until 24 November!

South African glass artist Malebogo Molokane’s is layered with emotion in a very literal way. But, her creations are also fused with a beautiful message of resilience:

Johannesburg, South Africa (21 February 2024) — South Africa’s glass artist Malebogo Molokane is embarking on her first official tour across her home country where her unique artistic edge will blow the minds of anyone who knows how to look beyond the surface.

The glass artist and Tshwane University of Technology alumni and part-time lecturer who was crowned the distinguished recipient of the 2022 Absa L’Atelier Gerard Sekoto Award got the chance to share her creations with the art capital, Paris, after her big win. There at the Cité Internationale des Arts, she challenged herself as the only glass artist among her peers. Unwavering and determined, the doubts she faced in her delicate craft culminated in something much bigger—her first solo exhibition.

Malebogo is now presenting her exhibition thanks to the French Institute of South Africa and the South African National Association for the Visual Arts (SANAVA), where her body of work has inspired visitors through both the message of the art and the craft behind it.

‘A Re Tshamekeng’ (“Let’s Play” in Setswane) explores the intricacies of emotional gestures and facial expressions through layered glass artworks. For the glass artist, the fragility of her medium is a reflection of the delicate balance of her journey and the subtle power of human expressions.

Glass Artist

Moments of tension, misery, excitement and confusion—life is a game that ‘A Re Tshamekeng’ brings to the forefront in a most unique way.

But life is also nothing if not full of fun at the best of times, which is why her work also focuses on fun board and indigenous games using a variety of glass techniques, from blowing to beading and sand casting. The results are mind-blowing layered glass creations that blend journeys, fun, expressions and the human experience.

Says the artist:

“Glass art is a process and a bundle of emotions from studio to display. It is also a fragile process, mirroring the delicate nature of human emotions. Each time I engage with glass, it becomes a different form of self-expression. I can experiment with it in various ways, even when it cuts through me—yes there’s pain but also fulfilment. The comparison between the fragility of glass and life is essentially the same, with moments of added frustration both in daily challenges and the delicate process of working with glass.”

The message, then, is that of resilience—just like her journey in creating the pieces. There will be pain, laughter, triumphs and challenges, but when you keep going and take a moment to reflect on all you’ve actually created, you’ll realise life is a game well worth giving your best shot.

Under-resourced Cape Town artists got a creative hand-up recently thanks to a big masterclass led by the City to elevate artistic opportunities!

Cape Town, South Africa (16 February 2024) — Cape Town and creativity go hand-in-hand. But making sure more creatives get their chance to make their mark on their home means that more opportunities have to become accessible, which is exactly what a recent masterclass did for 20 emerging Cape Town artists!

Many resources go into creating visual art—from materials and canvases right down to knowledge. For under-resourced and underprivileged artists who desperately want to start or elevate their careers, a lack of access is an obvious challenge.

So, in an effort to better equip under-resourced Cape Town artists who can play such an important role in the vibrance of the City, the City of Cape Town organised a masterclass as part of its Emerging Artist Programme.

The Emerging Artists programme focuses on a spectrum of support for Cape Town artists, including exhibition opportunities. Adding the masterclasses into the mix has added another element to the creatives’ journey—more skill-based knowledge to fuel the creative and craft processes.

Where the first Emerging Artists Masterclass focused on canvas prep, the recent session helped give artists a hand-up by being taught about colour theory, brush techniques and paint mixing. The third will happen in March, when the spotlight will shine on installation.

“Our emerging artists bring diversity to the industry. They represent a multitude of cultures, backgrounds and artistic approaches. This is reflected in the variety of artworks and broadens our artistic landscape,” said Mayco Member for Community Services and Health, Patricia van der Ross.

Since art gives the City so much to be proud of, it’s only fitting that the City is giving its budding creatives more opportunities to take pride in themselves!

The biggest street art festival in SA (and the continent), IPAF, is just around the corner, set to breathe new magic into the City of Cape Town for another year!

Cape Town, South Africa (08 February 2024)—Every year for the past seven, the International Public Arts Festival (IPAF) has brought big art, community and creativity to Cape Town. City spots get upgraded with gorgeous art. Larger-than-life murals turn streets into galleries. And artists get to connect through a special theme that injects new energy into the whole city.

Last year, Africa’s largest street festival highlighted Cape Town as an artistic hot spot. The poignant theme ‘Humanity’ brought new ideas and experiences to the table, creating room to showcase thought-provoking works that ranged from what social disconnection looks like to how we can reconnect again.

It’s almost time for fresh splashes of paint and renewed excitement as IPAF gears up to come back to Cape Town from 14-18 February.

Some of the artists who will be dressing up the City have already been announced, including South African-Portugese visual artist Vanesa Teodoro, Joburg’s mischievous Mars Graffiti, Illustrator and street artist Elléna Lourens, and international names.

The theme for IPAF 2024 is themed CoAct | CoLLab. According to IPAF:

“The possibilities feel endless with this year’s theme…inspiring connection through communal action and creative alliance. The heart of the festival will be an immersive public art experience on the lawns of the Company’s Garden; with public art projects emanating all across Cape Town CBD.”

So, this is your annual reminder save the dates and get ready to fall in love with art that’s free for everyone to be inspired by.

Strictly Come Dancing darling Johannes Radebe captivated audiences with his talent. Then, he captivated hearts with his story. From Zamelda township to the world, South Africa’s star is rising again and is set to have a movie made on his life:

Global (08 February 2024) — From Zamelda township in the Free State to the world, the story of the talented dancer and choreographer Johannes Radebe is set to be told on the silver screen!

Johannes first hopped onto entertainment radars after he worked his way to become a Strictly Come Dancing South Africa darling where he wowed local audiences and made the finals twice. Thereafter, he took the opportunity to go to the United Kingdom where he joined the OG Strictly Come Dancing as a professional dancer and got to shine in historic moments (like being in the show’s first male couple) and routines that oozed South African energy.

But Johannes’ story has captivated audiences almost as much as his dancing finesse. Under the glitz and glamour he so effortlessly presents is the telling of a boy who had to make it out of Zamelda, born into the curtails of oppression.

Despite the challenges of an upbringing touched with poverty and the constant fear of being gay in a conservative community, Johannes pushed on toward his dreams, carried forward by his mom and those who believed in him.

“It takes a township to raise a fabulous child.”—Johannes Radebe.

In fact, the dreamer’s story is so captivating, it became a Sunday Times Bestseller last year. “Jojo: Finally Home – My Inspirational Memoir” is now set to be told in another way—as a film which Johannes will also be part of producing!

Per Deadline, the film is set to be produced by Helena Spring Films (Helena Spring has produced Oscar nomination-worthy productions before), will encompass musical notes and of course, dance routines choreographed by Johannes.

We can’t wait for this incredible story to reach more hearts around the world and hopefully inspire the next young dancer just looking for a sign to follow their feet!

Artist Alfred Thoba’s 50-year-long career is set to be honoured in a legacy exhibition: ‘True Love’—a must for South African art and history lovers:

Johannesburg, South Africa (02 February 2024) — The life and work of South African Modernist Alfred Thoba (1951-2022) are both to be honoured in a new commemorative exhibition titled ‘True Love’.

A collaboration between Strauss & Co. and Kalashnikov Gallery, True Love will reflect on Thoba’s 50-year career in art as a unique force in the South Art scene, with a selection of his artworks to be exhibited along with archive materials in a special reconstruction of his Hillbrow home studio.

The story of Alfred Thoba is an important one in that of South Africa’s art and history, and one that has a deep relationship with the socio-politics of our country.

Hailing from Sophiatown, Thoba’s largely self-taught creations drew attention for the way they explored life from the lens of the disempowered, inspired by his personal life and the media he consumed through newspaper and magazine articles. But, it also brought forward topics of love and marriage; fledged into art in ways that helped influence the South African modernist art scene.

True Love will give art-lovers and historians a first-hand look at the works he exhibited from the 1980s right to his last completed painting. This way, the story of Thoba, his style, influences and contribution to South African art can be appreciated as a rich, evolving story.

The focus beyond honouring the late artist is also on art education so that school children can be inspired by the greats who came before.

True Love runs from 5 February to 1 March 2024 and can be visited at Strauss & Co Johannesburg.

A big opportunity for local creatives, from performing artists to cultural entrepreneurs, is on the cards with the Création Africa initiative!

South Africa (30 January 2024) — The final call for Création Africa applications has been issued, and any emerging creatives and cultural entrepreneurs or businesses in South Africa are invited to put their visions forward.

A R24 million initiative by the French Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs coordinated by the Embassy of France and the French Institute of South Africa, Création Africa showcases itself as big opportunity for creative growth. Those in the performing arts, film and television, museums, gaming, animation, XR and VR, as well as other movers and shakers, are encouraged to apply.

Given that some of the biggest issues for creatives are getting your foot in the door to funding and network expansions, the initiative hopes to open those doors and in turn, help South Africa’s untapped potential in the creative sector flourish.

“Création Africa is about cultural and creative endeavours; It’s a catalyst for cultural entrepreneurs who will be benefitting from an incubation program, funding and connections with investors,” shares Mr David Martin, the Ambassador of France to South Africa.

He adds that the initiative aims to provide tailored training and mentoring to help seed funding through an expansive creative network. Grants will be allocated based on the financial needs of the projects once the incubation programme is complete, and participating projects will be exposed to global networking opportunities.

Applications have already poured in since the Open Call, which has led to the application deadline being extended to 31 January.

You can find the application and all the details here.
