Everyone is discussing how to give back to families in need after the idea of paying for someone’s lay-by at Pep went viral on social media.
South Africa (25 January 2021) – Many parents in South Africa have had to put school uniforms on lay-by. This has been done because money is incredibly tight at the moment. A social media post encouraging people to visit their local Pep stores and pay for someone’s lay-by has gone viral, so we have the details on how you can take part.
Lay-by allows a person to purchase items they need and pay it off over a period. This method is a safer way to pay something off than to put it on credit. These days not many stores allow lay-by but Pep Stores still offer the service.
We are not sure where the original post came from as it has been copied several times, but the idea is the key point.
“If you have a few bob to spare, pop into your local PEP store and ask the cashiers to show you any lay-byes of school uniforms they have waiting for payment.
People who make these lay-byes are usually so desperate and would be very grateful if they found their purchaser paid for in full.”
So if you want to help a mother clothe her child, that is the concept. You just pop into your local Pep and pay towards someone’s lay-by.
Pep also have an initiative to help people pay their lay-by off so if you are not comfortable leaving your home, you can make a donation online via their Lay-By Buddy initiative.
- Any payment made gets deposited into the PEP lay-by fund for the purpose of settling lay-by customers’ purchases.
- Each month randomly selected beneficiaries will receive a voucher via SMS that they can then redeem against the outstanding balance of their PEP lay-by.
- Beneficiaries are selected randomly by the system each week and beneficiaries cannot be specified or selected.
