With National Cupcake Day on the menu tomorrow, we’re thrilled to see so many baked treats rolling in to make such an important difference! From Springbok-inspired goodies to floral’s sweetest, the creativity and kindness of community is loud and proud!

South Africa (29 September 2023) — As National Cupcake Day inches closer by the hour, cupcake angels from all over South Africa have already put their best bakes forward in anticipation of the big day. No mere ode to sweet treats, the cherry on top of the cupcake challenge led by Cupcakes of HOPE, will be the change created for kids with cancer in South Africa.

Tomorrow, cupcakes will unite in an icing-filled, impact-brimming way through parties of Hope (individual fundraisers featuring, you guessed it, cupcakes) or through National Cupcake Day’s participating malls where bakes will be available for donations, with proceeds set to help kids with cancer through Cupcakes of HOPE.

Last year, the organisation raised R2.1 million which allowed them to financially assist hundreds of patients.

This year, the cupcakes have begun rolling in with all kinds of creative goodies—from Springboks-inspired bakes to floral charms, rainbow assortments and cookie monsters:

You can support the cupcake angels and kids with cancer in South Africa by heading to any participating mall and supporting the sweetest cause:

Nomsa Malgas, a former waitress who lost her job at the beginning of COVID, transformed adversity into success by crafting garments from her own curtains and bed sheets, ultimately rising to prominence as one of South Africa’s top emerging designers.

Western Cape, South Africa (21 September 2023) – In the heart of South Africa’s bustling fashion scene, a rising star is illuminating the industry with her talent and tenacity. Nomsa Malgas, a name quickly becoming synonymous with creativity and innovation, has transcended the boundaries of her humble beginnings to establish herself as one of South Africa’s most up-and-coming designers.

Her journey is a testament to the indomitable spirit of a woman who refused to let adversity define her destiny.

Nomsa’s story begins with the backdrop of a world in turmoil. She was a waitress at the Waterfront, struggling to make ends meet for herself and her eight-month-old baby when the COVID-19 lockdown swept away her job. Left with no source of income and a child to care for, she embarked on a remarkable journey of reinvention. Determined to find a way to provide for her child, Nomsa turned her attention to crafting designer masks. Each morning, she would set up her makeshift stall outside Constantia Village Pick ‘n Pay, selling her unique creations. The money she earned from her sales was a lifeline, allowing her to buy essential baby food. It was a daily struggle, but Nomsa’s resilience shone through.

One fateful morning, Nomsa wore a top she had created herself, a testament to her growing talent as a designer. A regular customer, impressed by her creativity and style, suggested that she should showcase her work at Kamers, South Africa’s original artisan ‘up’-market. With newfound hope, Nomsa eagerly sent her details to the renowned market.

Kamers, a platform that champions local talent and craftsmanship, was the perfect stage for Nomsa’s journey to unfold. Founded two decades ago with just 34 makers and 800 shoppers, Kamers has grown into the largest artisan pop-up market in Africa. Every product showcased at Kamers reflects South African pride, intricate design, and heartfelt gratitude for supporting local talent.

The day Nomsa met Wanda du Toit from Kamers was a turning point in her life.

Despite being 90 minutes late due to a lost Uber, Nomsa arrived with two dresses she had ingeniously crafted from her bedroom curtains and a bedsheet. Nervous and uncertain, she met Wanda, who greeted her with a warm and welcoming hug. Overwhelmed with emotion, they both shed tears of joy.

Nomsa’s journey with Kamers has been nothing short of extraordinary. Over the course of five shows, she has evolved from a newcomer into one of the market’s top fashion makers. Her remarkable talent and dedication culminated in her recently receiving the prestigious Kamers Best Newcomer Award.

The Kamers team recognised her potential and arranged an FNB Maker Plan production loan for her, enabling her to expand her business and employ five people.

The FNB Maker Plan loan, a unique offering designed in partnership between Kamers and FNB, serves as a lifeline for smaller makers who need ‘bridging finance’ to produce their creations for specific shows.

Nomsa’s success story is a testament to the power of collaboration and support within the local creative community. Her journey from using curtains and bedsheets to create “preview garments” to becoming a celebrated fashion designer is a beacon of hope and inspiration. Her resilience, coupled with the unwavering support of platforms like Kamers and innovative financial solutions like the FNB Maker Plan, showcases the incredible potential of South African talent.

Her story reminds us that the pursuit of passion and dreams can lead to remarkable achievements, proving that even in the face of adversity, there are always “good things” waiting to happen.

PNA and Breadline Africa unite for Funky Socks Day 2023, aiming to revolutionise education in South Africa’s vulnerable communities.

Johannesburg, South Africa (05 September 2023) – South Africa’s renowned stationery and art materials retailer, PNA, is thrilled to announce the launch of the 2023 Funky Socks Day campaign.

What’s even more exciting is that they’ve teamed up with the non-profit organisation, Breadline Africa, to create a powerful initiative aimed at fostering early child development and enhancing schools in vulnerable communities across the nation.

Funky Socks Day is all about making a difference and inspiring friends and family to join in on the fun! For just R10, you can purchase a Funky Socks Day sticker at any PNA store nationwide, and in doing so, you’ll contribute to fundraising efforts for education. Then, mark your calendars for Friday, September 8, 2023, and don your most colourful and eccentric socks to show your commitment to building a brighter future for children in need.

Chantelle Fritz, PNA’s marketing manager, shares, “Our primary mission is to establish safe Early Childhood Development Centers throughout South Africa, ensuring that every child has the opportunity to start their life purposefully and positively. We aim to upgrade existing schools and construct new ones to provide quality education for children aged one to six years old. Funky Socks Day holds a special place in our hearts as it aligns with Mandela Day, celebrated on July 18th, symbolizing real and practical change.”

So, what exactly do those Funky Socks Day stickers accomplish?

PNA and Breadline Africa have intensified their efforts this year by taking on the task of constructing additional infrastructure to complete the Lusemanzi Educare Centre, which was established in 1997 in Orange Farm, Gauteng. Currently, the centre operates with insufficient classroom space and only two toilets for its 200 eager learners. Lusemanzi urgently needs functional buildings and extra amenities.

The estimated cost of constructing this additional infrastructure, including ablutions, amounts to R1.5 million.

“This means we must sell just 150,000 stickers to ensure the little ones have a safe, warm facility to learn and grow in,” says Fritz.

Imagine all those funky socks on display at schools, universities, and workplaces on September 8th!

Breadline Africa has been partnering with PNA for the Funky Socks Day initiative for the past two years, according to Marion Wagner, Director of Breadline Africa.

“By purchasing Funky Socks Day stickers, South Africans have made valuable contributions to the campaign, funding the construction and refurbishment of Early Childhood Development centres in vulnerable communities.”

Over the years, the PNA-Breadline Africa collaboration has successfully raised funds to rebuild five schools across South Africa. Lusemanzi Educare, registered in 1997, has faced its share of challenges, including an arson attack and severe storm damage. However, despite these obstacles, Principal Lorato Duma continues to run a successful centre and is continually improving the learning environment for her students.

Funky Socks Day symbolises hope and progress for recipient schools. The campaign culminates in the handover of improved classrooms and amenities, providing a better learning environment for children.

Wagner notes, “To date, we have provided more than 1,000 converted shipping containers and prefabricated facilities to resource-poor communities across the country, and our impact extends to more than 250,000 children.”

“We believe every child has the capacity to do something amazing with their life. When a child’s imagination is unlocked, possibilities are opened up to enable them to choose a path for their own future,” she says. “None of this would be possible without the support of our donors, one of whom is South African company, PNA, which has generously committed funding and time to work with us to improve the lives of South Africa’s children.”

But the excitement doesn’t stop there! There’s an exciting competition where three lucky schools have the chance to each win R5000.00. To enter, all you need to do is purchase Funky Socks Day stickers from your nearest PNA store and showcase your school’s fantastic spirit by rocking those funky socks. Capture a photo or video of your school demonstrating their enthusiasm for Funky Socks Day and share it on Facebook or Instagram with the hashtag #RockYourFunkySocks and tag PNA-Colour Your World. Don’t miss this opportunity to support your school and showcase your creativity!

In addition to PNA’s efforts, Sock Doctor has pledged a significant contribution to Funky Socks Day by partnering with PNA and supporting Breadline Africa. For every active PNA store with a Sock Doctor stand on Funky Socks Day, the company will donate 250 pairs of school socks to a school of choice.

Fritz adds, “In the spirit of giving ’til our socks drop off, participants get to embrace our Funky Socks Day by wearing a pair of vibrant socks to work and school on September 8, 2023. Buy your stickers, challenge your schoolmates to do the same, and join PNA and Breadline Africa in rocking your Funky Socks while making a lasting impact on the lives of South African children. Together, we can build a brighter future through education.”

Get ready to rock your Funky Socks and be a part of this inspiring initiative that’s making real change happen in South Africa!

Break time quickly turned into a mattress-led rescue mission for Hoërskool Hermanus students after a paraglider pilot got trapped in a tree. Thanks to their efforts, his landing had a much happier ending!

Hermanus, South Africa (15 May, 2023)—Operation ‘safe fall’ swiftly became the talk of break time for Hermanus students and residents.

What started as a regular school day last week took a turn for the heroic after teachers noticed that a paraglider had an unfortunate tree landing in treetops across from Hoërskool Hermanus.

According to the South African Hang-gliding and Paragliding Association (SAHPA) the paraglider is a 34-year-old pilot who was flying under radio instruction at the time.

Hoërskool Hermanus teachers immediately set to help by calling emergency services. However, the tree had caught the paraglider at a height no ladder in town could reach.

Mrs De Villiers, Mr Kuhn, Mr Mangiagalli and Ms Nel decided to rally the student’s minds for the next best option; encouraging them to think outside of the box to help the paraglider where possible.

Break time was in full swing and the assignment had been shared: Find the best ‘safe fall’ option possible!

The student heroes ran with the idea in the most literal sense, racing to collect enough high jump mattresses to cushion the paraglider’s landing.

“Within moments the tree was lined all round with the [high jump matrasses] that the learners came running with. Ms Schulenberg was on hand, being a qualified First Aider and assisted where possible.”—Hoërskool Hermanus.

Watch: Operation Safe Fall in Full Swing

After the break ended, one of the trees branches that held the paraglider gave way to his journey back to land. Luckily, his unforeseen fall was mattress-proofed thanks to the teachers and students, making for only mid injuries.

The pilot was shortly assessed by paramedics and went to the hospital for a much-smoother recovery thanks to the student’s speedy response.

“The actions of our pupils and quick thinking of our teachers spoke volumes amidst emergency, and we are extremely proud of the way they handled the situation.” —Hoërskool Hermanus.

The prestigious “Frontiers Planet Prize 2023” winners have just been announced and a South African scientist took the top spot!

Global (02 May 2023) – The International Champions of the Frontiers Planet Prize 2023 have been announced during the Awards Ceremony at the Frontiers Forum Live and a South African scientist took the top spot.

The International Champions of the Frontiers Planet Prize, a new global sustainability competition chaired by Johan Rockström, Director of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, have been announced. The Prize recognises and rewards scientists whose research contributes to the future of the planet within the framework of the nine planetary boundaries.

The prize winners include:

  • From South Africa, Prof Mark New, University of Cape Town, Research article: “Nature-based solutions in mountain catchments reduce impact of anthropogenic climate change on drought streamflow.” Published in Communications Earth and Environment, 2022.
  • From the United Kingdom, Prof Carlos Peres, University of East Anglia, Research article: “Sustainable-use protected areas catalyse enhanced livelihoods in rural Amazonia.” Published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, 2021.
  • From China, Prof Baojing Gu, Zhejiang University, Research article: “Abating ammonia is more cost-effective than nitrogen oxides for mitigating particulate matter 2.5 air pollution.” Published in Science.org, 2021.
  • From the Netherlands, Dr Paul Behrens, Leiden University, Research article: “Dietary change in high-income nations alone can lead to substantial double climate dividend.” Published in Nature Food, 2022.

The jury determined that Professor New (South Africa) and Professor Peres (United Kingdom) were awarded CHF 1 million (R20,470,360) each. A tie between Professor Gu (China) and Professor Behrens (The Netherlands) meant they were awarded CHF 500,000 (R10,282,290) each.

All the funds allocated to each of them are intended to be used to support their research.

The Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAf) is the National Representative Body (NRB) for the Frontiers Planet Prize and nominated Prof Mark New for the Prize.

The competition was officially launched on 22 April 2022 —Earth Day— by the Frontiers Research Foundation, a non-profit organisation based in Lausanne, Switzerland, whose mission is to accelerate scientific solutions to live healthy lives on a healthy planet.

The competition engaged 233 universities across six continents, 13 national academies of science, and an independently run jury of 100 sustainability experts chaired by Professor Johan Rockström.

On this year’s Earth Day, 22 April, the second edition of the competition was launched, aiming to increase the participation of scientists, research institutions and national academies across the globe, with the goal to continue mobilising the scientific community for solutions to keep us within the boundaries of our planet’s ecosystem.

Disabled activists and icons shine on the covers of British Vogue as the conversation around inclusivity and representation in media takes progressive steps!

Global (27 April, 2023) – Despite being ‘ahead of the curve’ when it comes to all things style and trend, the fashion industry has long been stuck in the past when it comes to its muses. Thanks to people in the industry speaking out, things are changing for the better, with more inclusivity than ever gracing cover pages.

British Vogue recently unveiled covers dedicated to Disabled activists and game-changers. The May Issue is helping to turn the page on what’s deemed iconic, showcasing people who’ve navigated an abled world and empowered others through their own grace and grit.

According to British Vogue editor, Ghana-born Edward Enninful, the issue was “one of the proudest moments of [his] career”.

The series of portraits focuses on a range of incredible people.

There’s Justina Miles who you might recall as the star sign language interpreter from Rihanna’s Superbowl show. Aaron Rose Philip, a physically Disabled model who inspired other models to break the industry’s glass ceiling.

Actress Selma Blair who has multiple sclerosis, Ellie Goldstein, a British model with Down syndrome whose dreams changed the conversation for so many, and consulting editor Sinead Burke who was paramount to making the issue happen.

“What we created on set felt so important, but we knew it was a start, not a destination.”—Sinead Burke.

The ‘Reframing Fashion: Dynamic, Daring & Disabled” issue is something of a love letter to all the people who never saw themselves in beauty standards, and what many hope will be a new chapter for the industry.

And, it’s also been praised for going against the grain of gimmicks, using difference as the main story as opposed a token for brands to appear inclusive. Enninful even went as far as to reject advertising from major fashion houses who don’t align with his vision for inclusivity.

The series will feature 19 Disabled trailblazers across fields—from artists and comedians to racecar drivers like Nicolas Hamilton who has Cerebral Palsy.

As Burke shared, this Issue is the start of what will hopefully open a door that’s been locked for too long, for too many.

Keira King didn’t want to be a keyboard warrior. Instead of simply making a change, she’s paddling toward one! The 16-year-old will tackle 40 km from Ballito to Ushaka Beach with a penguin-loving cause at the finish line.

KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa (26 April, 2023) —Growing up in Durban, Keira King cultivated a deep for her aquatic neighbours, great, small and tuxedo-wearing.

Going beyond the surface of her passion for our oceans, this 16-year-old has set her mind to a mighty paddling endeavour that’ll see her tackle 40kms from Ballito to Durban.

Speaking to Good Things Guy, Keira shared that she is “tired of being a keyboard activist”, opting to make tangible change instead.

“I have discovered that life below the waves is not as abundant as it once was, and a huge culprit is plastic pollution. So I have decided to do something about it—and hopefully encourage others to join me in the process!” —Keira King.

Her goal is to raise funds for African Penguins and their guardian organisation, the Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds (SANCCOB). Here, her efforts can make a necessary difference for the birds of the sea, and their little ones.

At present, SANCCOB is on a quest to upgrade its Chick Rearing Unit in Cape Town, where hatchlings are artificially incubated and released back into the wild after hatching. As the only organisation in the world to do this, SANCCOB and supporters like Keira are helping bolster the African Penguin population.

A True Friend of the Sea

This isn’t the first time Keira’s gone the mile for the ocean’s children. Last year, she swam from Robben Island to mainland Cape Town in icy waters to raise funds for Turtle rehabilitation. Her first ‘she must be crazy…in the kindest way’ mission saw her raise R25 000 for the Two Oceans Aquarium.

Following in her swim strokes, a group of grade 5 girls from Cape Town recently did their part too.

“At the time of my swim 100 hatchlings had beached and were being looked after by the rehab centre. I got to meet bob the turtle and feed him and so excited to see that after 9 years he was released back into the ocean in my home town of Durban.”— Keira King.

Currently, Keira’s looking for sponsors to help her out with the racing board to complete her ‘crazy paddle’.

You can support Keira (and the penguins) via her GivenGain campaign here!

A brave taxi driver was asked for help after he passed by a robbery scene. Instead of offering reassuring words, he did them one better and chased down the suspects!

Strand, South Africa (25 April, 2023) —Who needs The Flash when you have a brave taxi driver that’s just as fast?

A recent robbery in Strand reportedly saw people robbed of their phones and wallets while heading home after a long day’s work. Two off-duty security guards along with other passengers were understandably shaken when things took a turn for the better.

Those who had managed to escape the ordeal saw a taxi driver approaching, whom they decided to ask for help.

Instead of simply offering reassuring words or a ride, the taxi driver understood the assignment and accelerated into action.

According to SAPS’ Lieutenant Colonel Malcolm Pojie, the taxi driver chased down two of the suspects, and handed them over to the local police to face the music.

Although he was only able to nab two of the three suspects believed to be involved, the third suspect came forward to the police.

All the suspects appeared in court on Friday, largely thanks to the brave taxi driver who is now being hailed a hero in Strand.

Meanwhile, another heroic taxi driver was revealed recently, but not for fighting crime. A backseat passenger’s story of ‘the best taxi driver’ went viral recently for all the right reasons, after she witnessed him going out of his way to help a disabled passenger in need of assistance!

A story about a taxi driver has gone viral for all the right reasons after the best taxi driver helped a disabled passenger and made her day that much easier.

Gauteng, South Africa (24 April, 2023) — After a South African went viral for paying every passenger’s fare, another feel-good taxi story came about, this time from the seat of the taxi driver.

Taking to social media, Lebo Mosweu shared the ‘knight in a shining taxi’ moment that made her trip to work that morning unexpectedly wonderful. And, the kind act didn’t even happen to her.

She shared that taxi driver had gone out of his way to make sure a disabled passenger could get to where she needed to be, and even went as far as to help her once they’d arrived.

In the backseat passenger’s words:

“This is the taxi I took this morning to work. What amazed me about my trip today is the driver. He had a young lady passenger who was on a wheelchair. She was sitting in the front seat.

When she reached the point where she needed to get off, the driver asked her where she was going? She then pointed the area out to him. He then turned the taxi around, away from the route he normally takes.

When he reached her destination, he then got out, picked her up and put her on her wheelchair. I could see how happy she was about the whole experience. May the good Lord bless this driver.” — Lebo Mosweu.

Soon, other people began sharing their taxi hero moments, with another passenger in the Western Cape, Jo-jo Johanna-Marie Wulff, sharing that a driver she knows as Amo always goes out of his way to make her trips easier experiences:

“As I’m struggling with my legs, he goes out of his way to me make me as comfortable as possible. He always comes up with a plan to accommodate me in any way.”

Thousands of people saluted ‘The Best Taxi Driver’. Another day on the job to some, is another day to make change for others, one passenger at a time.

The days are flying by until the first Netball World Cup in Africa ever, and Cape Town shared its excitement through art.

Cape Town, South Africa (21 April, 2023)—With less than 100 days to go until the first Netball World Cup is enjoyed on African courts, the City of Cape Town (set to host) can’t contain its excitement.

In celebration of the 100-day mark this week, the City unveiled another epic artwork dedicated to netball heritage in South Africa; earmarking that it’s high time for a South African—and African—hosting moment.

Netball World Cup

It was a busy day in the City’s CBD on Lower Long Street, with roads blocked off on Wednesday while the artwork was underway. Now, the busy street between Walter Sisulu Avenue and Wharf Street has an inspired makeover, adding to the list of artworks dedicated to the Netball World Cup all over Cape Town.

Several murals have been scattered throughout the city, including the vibrant Mitchell’s Plain mural by artist Wayne Bks.

Other murals celebrating the art of netball can be seen in Langa, Khayelitsha, Strand and Belville South.

As for the City, slickers will be able to enjoy the Protea-proud road artwork for months to come.

Not to mention, a fan park is also on the horizon.

“Cape Town is officially ready to welcome the world to our beautiful city this July. A lot of hard work has been going on behind the scenes for over 36 months to ensure Cape Town is able to deliver a memorable Netball World Cup experience for players and spectators. Outside the CTICC, the City has earmarked a space which will be used as a fan park during the tournament.

“Just like we had thousands on the Grand Parade for the 2010 World Cup, we want this space to be a place where thousands of Netball fans can gather to enjoy games and everything netball. We call on the world to come experience a uniquely African Netball World Cup in one of the world’s top destinations and for locals to bring the gees to back the Proteas.”—Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis.

Additionally, the street netball programme will see junior players from Grassy Park, Elsies River, Mitchells Plain, Khayelitsha, Langa, Mfuleni, Ocean View and Nomzamo take part, have fun and be guided toward future opportunities.

The street netball games begin today, 21 April.

As for the Netball World Cup, we’ve got our calendars marked with protea doodles for 28 July.
