Danie van Heerden is flying the South African flag on a new fighting stage; he is representing South Africa in Power Slap.

South Africa (05 March 2024) — A fairly new sport is growing in popularity on the global stage. It’s called ‘Power Slap’, and it is pretty much exactly what it states: a competition dedicated to the power of slapping a person. It may not be every person’s cup of tea, and that is okay! We are highlighting the sport as it recently saw the introduction of South African heavyweight Danie van Heerden, who is making a name for himself – fast!

Meet Danie “Pitbull” van Heerden, from Pretoria, who has been competing on the international stage. Flying the South African flag in the hopes of becoming a World Champion. He spent his early career, focussing on boxing and wrestling and has now rejoined the fighting ring as a Power Slap competitor.

Founded by Dana White, the President of UFC, Power Slap has taken the world by storm. Danie shared that he became hooked on the sport after the first match was hosted in South Africa in 2022. Having faced some dark times, tragically losing his father and overcoming suicidal thoughts, Danie has found a passion for Power Slap and is on his way to the top!

“This is sports on a world-class platform and you’re never too old or heavy for anything. I want to prove to myself that whatever I put my mind to, I can and will come out on top.” – Danie van Heerden

Danie popped onto our radar after a TikTok went viral sharing the news about his “Klapping” power. It highlights his booming career so far and what people can look forward to for the year of 2024.

@coolstorybru_ Danie van Heerden is a South African man competing in Power Slap 😂🤣🇿🇦 All the individuals in this video are professionals and are safe! #southafrica #tiktoksouthafrica #tiktoksouthafrica🇿🇦 ♬ original sound – Cool Story Bru! 🇿🇦

How does the sport work?

A coin toss decides which competitor goes first. They are known as the “first striker.” They have 60 seconds to deliver a slap to the opponent’s face. A qualifying slap must be open-handed and land below the eye and above the chin.

There are a few technical points, such as the whole hand must connect with the face at the same time, one cannot lead with the palm first.

The opponents may not flinch, raise shoulders or tuck their chins. They have 60 seconds to recover and return to their standing position otherwise the slap is considered a knockout.

Fights that don’t end in a knockout, go for three rounds and the winner is decided by the judges. They use a 10-point system, with judging based on the effectiveness of the slap, and the slap receivers’ reaction and recovery time.

The sport has faced some serious criticism, and we hear it! It is conducted by trained professionals, and events are carefully managed to ensure the safety of competitors. It is best to leave this sport to the professionals.

We wish Danie all the best in his journey to hopefully become a World Champion! You can follow his progress via Facebook or Instagram.

Danie may be the next South African bringing home a championship belt – so stay tuned!

The men’s over-40 cricket team just won the International Masters Cricket World Cup, beating New Zealand on home turf!

Cape Town, South Africa (04 March 2024) – The inaugural over-40s International Masters Cricket (IMC) World Cup was hosted in South Africa recently and our incredible home team won, beating New Zealand by 6 wickets!

The IMC hosts tournaments for over 40s, 50s, 60s and 70s teams. The IMC was officially established at an AGM on 6 August 2023, which included members from all 14 member nations. The AGM brought the over-60s and over-70s into the fold, meaning that IMC now covers all four age groups.

Countries involved include major cricket nations like the UK (Wales competes as a stand-alone team), India, Australia, New Zealand, the West Indies and Sri Lanka; other countries also involved include neighbouring Zimbabwe and Namibia, the United Arab Emirates, the United States and Canada, and Pakistan.

Over the weekend, Cape Town played host to the Over-40s World Cup and South Africa won the whole thing!

“South Africa have won the IMC Over-40s World Cup, beating New Zealand by 6 wickets in the Grand Final today.

South Africa bowled fantastically to restrict the powerful NZ batting lineup to just 155 (tournament top run-scorer Hardeep Singh hit 55) and then worked their way methodically to the target with about 9 overs to spare. Werner Moolman top-scored with 45 not out.” – International Masters Cricket

“It was a well-deserved win for the hosts, who only suffered one loss during the tournament, to New Zealand in round robin play.

Congratulations to South Africa, and to all the teams that made this a fantastic inaugural Over-40s World Cup!” – International Masters Cricket

Take a look at the moment the team lifted the World Cup below:

Here’s a guide to discerning truth from fiction amidst the flood of AI-fuelled “breaking news,” empowering you with five key strategies to unveil the veil of deceit.

Johannesburg, South Africa (03 March 2024) – AI-generated content is taking over the internet, blurring the lines between reality and fabrication, and it seems even our most cherished news stories may not be what they seem. Brace yourselves, Good Things Guy family, for the snow in Durban, the sharks in Port Elizabeth, and those jaw-dropping beach sculptures are not as real as some of you once believed.

I can hardly fathom having to relay this message, but it’s a truth we can no longer ignore. Even though some of you may see through AI-generated content, the heartbreaking reality is that countless individuals are falling victim to the allure of fake photos masquerading as sensational “breaking news.”

There are various reasons that motivate the use of AI-generated photos from clickbait tactics to driving more social media engagement (this is usually a big influence), to spreading real misinformation and sometimes it’s all just in the name of fun.

It’s a bitter pill to swallow, but it’s high time we confronted this AI-fuelled digital deception head-on because it can be incredibly problematic should the user not know that the images are, in fact, not breaking news. You see, these ideas then become a person’s belief – where a joke has now evolved to a fact in someone’s mind.

And yes, we know that distinguishing fact from fiction can be daunting but we’ve put together five telltale signs to help you discern AI-fuelled fabrications:

  • Unrealistic Detail: AI-generated images often exhibit an uncanny level of detail that surpasses reality. Look closely for inconsistencies or hyper-realistic elements that seem too perfect to be true.
  • Lack of Context: Authentic breaking news photographs typically come with accompanying context or corroborating reports. If an image surfaces without supporting information or credible sources, proceed with scepticism.
  • Identical Images: AI algorithms have limitations, leading to the replication of certain features across multiple images. If you stumble upon identical or nearly identical photographs depicting different events, it’s a red flag signalling potential manipulation.
  • Unlikely Scenarios: Trust your instincts when assessing the plausibility of the depicted scenario. Outlandish events or occurrences that defy logic should prompt further investigation into the image’s authenticity.
  • Reverse Image Search: Leverage online tools such as reverse image search engines to trace the origins of the photograph. If the image has been widely circulated or appears across various unrelated contexts, exercise caution before accepting its legitimacy.

It comes down to knowing – when we know better, we do better. And then we can help others too.

How do we do that? Well, if you see an AI-generated piece of “Breaking News”, call it out in the comments so others won’t be fooled. Even if the photos are “just for fun”, help others navigate the AI-generated noise.

And then we can all laugh at the photos together.

Snow on the beaches of Durban. Have you ever? LOL.

Since being rescued from Boksburg, the two tigers have started settling in at their new home and the game plan is weight loss!

Free State, South Africa (29 February 2024) – Two tigers were rescued from a private residence in Boksburg earlier this month by the NSPCA. They have since been moved to the Isindile Big Cat and Predator Sanctuary in Fouriesburg, Free State.

The sanctuary is NSPCA accredited, and will be home to the pair for the rest of their lives. Speaking to Ansa Gerber, the founding Director, she shared that the pair are currently in a small holding enclosure so they can adjust to a natural environment and after a few months, and with the sign-off of NSPCA veterinarian Dr Peter Caldwell, they will move into their perminant space.

“We relocated them to our sanctuary on 20 February. They were released into a smaller holding enclosure where they will learn to adjust to life in a natural environment and where it is easier for us to observe them. In 3-4 months from now, depending on the veterinarian Dr Peter Caldwell’s recommendation, they will then be moved to a one hectare enclosure where they will then stay permanently. All our enclosures are designed to cater for the needs of our animals and to allow them unending views of the valley and mountains in the distance, creating the illusion of even more space.”

Both tigers are overweight so they are currently on a diet to help them get back to the powerful predators they should be. The diet plan will be about a year long, to help them gradually lose the weight.

“As they are extremely overweight they are on a tailored diet to help them lose weight very gradually over a period of a year or more. The special diet as well as space to play, explore and exercise will also assist in slimming them down. They have settled down well and enjoy exploring especially after sunset.”

Not only were these two rescued, the sanctuary also helpedwith the rescue of a young Bengal tiger from Pakistan.

“This young tiger was rescued from the exotic pet trade in Pakistan and in dire condition with multiple bone fractures when he was found by the Islamabad Wildlife Management Board (IWMB) at a local veterinarian office. Under the care of IWMB and Second Chance Wildlife (SCW) in Pakistan after consultation with South African specialist veterinarian, Dr Peter Caldwell, he was nursed back to health.

In a joint operation with The Aspinall Foundation, IWMB and SCW this young tiger were flown to South Africa and released at our sanctuary on 14 February 2024. He is a lively young tiger enjoying his new life in the Eastern Free State.”

Schoolchildren in Ireland collected 20,000 pairs of preloved shoes to donate to children in Cape Town – the handover took place and the children were so excited!

Cape Town, South Africa (28 February 2024) – 20,000 preloved sports shoes from Irish schoolchildren have landed in Cape Town for distribution to children in informal settlements, marking a milestone for the 2023 In My Shoes Campaign. This initiative is the collective effort of thousands of families and schools across Ireland, proving how small acts of kindness can have a profound impact.

In My Shoes, conceived by Irishman Ciarán McHugh and London-based businessman Kevin Grant, originally from Bloemfontein, aims to tackle the issue of South African township children going barefoot. This initiative has grown from a simple concept into a widespread campaign, sending thousands of pre-loved shoes to those in need.

The campaign has resonated deeply within the Irish community, garnering support from children, parents, and educators alike. Schools have embraced the initiative, fostering a culture of generosity and appreciation among students.

Nearly 3,000 pairs of shoes were delivered to Ukhanyo Primary School in Masiphumelele this week. The handover was facilitated by Masi Sports Founder and legendary South African cricketer Vince Van der Bijl.

Reflecting on the Masi handover Ciaran McHugh says, “Visiting Masi Sports was one of those rollercoaster days that take a while to digest but will stick with you for years to come.

What a humbling experience to see the fantastic work done by NGO programmes of both MasiSports & @UbuntuFootball

It was a privilege to see the impact on the ground of the small portion of the 20,000 pairs of shoes donated by thousands of Irish families during the 2023 In My Shoes campaign.”

In My Shoes partners with leading South African NGOs, such as Connect Academy, CATCH Trust, and Masi Sports, to efficiently distribute shoes to children in need. The team is scheduled to meet with these partners over the next week to personally deliver the preloved footwear, ensuring they reach those who need it most.

Patrick Rowson has officially made the best margarita, and it’s based on the homegrown favourite Chakalaka.

Dubai, United Arab Emirates (23 February 2024) – The 22nd of February is Margarita Day and at a hotel in Dubai, a competition was hosted to find the best margarita and its maker. Competition was fierce, but a proudly South African bartender took the top prize with his Chakalaka-inspired drink.

Meet Patrick “Pat” Rowson, the creator of the world’s best margarita – the “Chakalakita”.

Originally from Northern Johannesburg, Pat has travelled the world and settled at the international restaurant and bar called COYA in Dubai. Here he has worked in prime locations in the UAE and Greece, serving delicious drinks to international travellers. He is today, the senior bartender and has a passion for making good drinks.

His inspiration for the Chakalakita was based on the homegrown favourite Chakalaka.

A post shared by Pat Rowson 🃏 (@patrowson_)

On his win, the competition judges shared that they were thrilled with his margarita submission.

“We are thrilled to announce our UAE Winner of the 2024 Cointreau Margarita Challenge – congratulations to Patrick Rowson from COYA Dubai!

His winning cocktail the ‘Chakalakita’ – a twist on the classic Margarita, made with ingredients inspired by ‘Chakalaka’, a dish originating in Johannesburg, South Africa where Patrick is from, wowed the judges through an incredibly balanced profile on the palette & Patrick’s sensorial presentation.” – Cointreau

Speaking to Patrick about Chakalakita

We got to chat with Pat about his win and he called it an honour. He is excited for what comes next, where he will go on to represent South Africa and the UAE at the global finals. Pat will take the Chakalakita to the global stage.

“It really feels like hard work has paid off and such an honour to have won this competition. Especially being competing against other great mixologists in Dubai. I feel extremely happy and humbled.”

He spent around a month working to perfect the drink.

“I worked on the drink for about a month, trying to balance the ingredients and achieve the right flavor profile I wanted. As well as playing around with different glassware, ice and garnishes to find the right fit for the profile of the cocktail”

As for advice for hopeful mixologists?

“The best advice I could give would be to never stop learning and soak up as much knowledge as you can from others around you. Keep an open mind and experiment with new ideas regularly!”

With his new-found fame in the drinks world, Pat hopes to head home for a few guest spots at some of SA most trendy bars – he says “Keep your eyes peeled”!

Congrats on the win Pat! You have made South Africa truly proud.

Join Reesa Teesa’s riveting journey through love, lies, and self-discovery in the viral sensation, ‘Who TF Did I Marry?’

Global (21 February 2024) – In a whirlwind of drama and revelation, a TikTok saga has taken the internet by storm, captivating audiences with its raw honesty and jaw-dropping twists. Dubbed “Who TF Did I Marry?”, this viral series unfolds the gripping tale of Reesa Teesa’s tumultuous journey through love, deceit, and ultimately self-discovery.

Reesa, a resilient soul from the Atlanta area, bravely chronicles her harrowing experience of being entangled with a “pathological liar,” whom she endearingly dubs “Legion” after the biblical tale of demons. With candour and courage, she peels back the layers of her past relationship, laying bare the shocking fabrications and heartaches woven into her once-promising romance.

“I’m going to tell the story of how I met, dated, married, and divorced a real pathological liar,” she said in the introductory video, sharing that she was going to be truthful, even if it makes her look bad.

But it didn’t (make her look bad) and it certainly didn’t disappoint. I have not stopped watching the videos and reading the comments for two days now, and I believe that this may be the best use of TikTok that I have ever seen. Reesa’s storytelling is completely captivating. In total, the “series” spans more than 10 hours – which includes an hour-long live chat. I have watched them all and it is WILD. I took Reesa everywhere with me – the office, the car and even the shower. I could not stop listening.

The saga begins innocently enough, as Reesa recounts her initial meeting with “Legion” through the digital maze of online dating in March 2020, just as the world plunged into the depths of a global pandemic. Their connection blossomed against the backdrop of uncertainty, with moments of genuine affection punctuated by grandiose tales spun by her enigmatic partner.

At the heart of “Who TF Did I Marry?” lies a narrative rife with betrayal and shattered illusions. “Legion” regaled Reesa with tales of wealth and success, weaving a labyrinth of lies that ensnared her in a web of deceit. From claims of being a former arena football player to purported roles at tech giant Apple and a condiment company, his fabrications knew no bounds. Yet, beneath the veneer of charm and charisma lay a dark truth that would unravel with devastating consequences. As Reesa delved deeper into the maze of her partner’s past, she unearthed a tangled web of falsehoods and deception. False identities, fabricated bank statements, and a trail of broken promises shattered the illusion of love, leaving her grappling with the harsh reality of betrayal.

But amid the wreckage of her shattered dreams, Reesa has found solace in the power of her own resilience. With unwavering resolve, she has emerged from the ashes of her failed marriage, her spirit unbroken and her voice unyielding. In sharing her story with the world, she imparts a powerful message of empowerment and awareness, urging others to heed the warning signs of deception and manipulation.

The series has racked up millions of views and also, in turn, gained millions of followers for Reesa. It’s “Tinder Swindler” for 2024 brought to you by a real human who we can all resonate with.

Through her journey of self-discovery, she shines a light on the enduring strength of the human spirit, reminding us all that even in our darkest moments, hope remains.

A swim cap, goggles, a South African flag bikini, and sheer determination are all that Amber Fillary is armed with to tackle her back-to-back Guinness World Record Attempts finally.

South Africa (20 February 2024) – One year after her thwarted attempt due to a knee infection causing her to blackout under the ice, Amber Fillary, current Guinness World Record Holder for the longest swim under ice in a single breath, wearing only a bikini and goggles, is gearing up for another shot at glory in Norway.

Set to take place on March 2nd and 3rd, 2024, Amber aims to break the current men’s record for the longest distance under ice in a single breath and establish a new record swimming under the ice with a Monofin.

“I was devastated after last year’s attempt,” Amber reflects on her previous endeavour. “It’s quite soul-destroying putting in all of the work and sacrifices for them to not amount to anything, but that is one of the challenges with this, and I suppose any sport, especially one where you are trying to set a Guinness World Record.”

Despite setbacks, Amber’s determination remains unwavering. With her sights set on these formidable challenges, she is leaving no stone unturned in her preparation, including acclimatizing to the colder European weather in Berlin before heading to Norway.

Excitement and nerves intertwine as Amber anticipates the intense feats that lie ahead.

“It will be intense getting into the icy water twice to do two breath holds in one day,” she acknowledges, “but I’m not getting any younger and want to give this my all!”

This year, Amber heads back with her heart set on supporting the South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG).

Amber’s endeavours will not only break records but also serve as a platform to raise vital funds and awareness for mental health through SADAG’s initiatives.

Amber’s record attempts are not just about personal achievement; they carry a deeper purpose. As a recovering addict and eating disorder survivor, she aims to raise awareness for mental health issues, particularly poignant after the global pandemic. Her message resonates: don’t let depression and addiction hinder your dreams.
For those interested in supporting Amber on her journey, sponsorship opportunities are available, and she has also set up a crowdfunding page to assist with funding.

As Amber embarks on this extraordinary adventure, the support of her sponsors, Carrick Wealth, SADAG, and her global community underscores the power of collaboration in pursuing athletic excellence while championing important causes.
