Charities are the backbone of South Africa, and they always welcome support, but there are a few things they wish donors would know; let’s take a look.

South Africa (21 February 2024) – Donating to a charity is a generous and meaningful decision that can make a positive difference in society. However, before you donate, it’s important to do some research and planning to ensure that your donation is effective and impactful.

In order to make sure that your support creates maximum impact, consider these factors:

Research is vital

To ensure your donation makes a real impact and is securely allocated, it’s crucial to review the charity’s history of effectiveness. Additionally, enhance your due diligence by searching for the organization’s name alongside terms like “complaint,” “review,” or “rating” to gather insights from others’ experiences.

CEO of local non-profit Relate Bracelets, Dalit Shekel says, ‘Prior to making a donation, it’s essential to familiarize yourself with several key aspects of the charity, including its legitimacy, reputation, mission, impact, social media presence, and the tax implications of your donation. A thorough understanding of these factors not only maximizes the impact of your contribution but also safeguards against potential scams.’

Discover how the charity allocates its funds and evaluates its success. Request access to financial statements, budgets, audits, or impact reports to understand the distribution of your donation between the cause itself and administrative or fundraising expenses. Additionally, seek signs of accountability, transparency, and exemplary governance, including the presence of independent board members, external assessments, or adherence to ethical codes of conduct,” she further emphasizes.

Choose a charity that matches your interests and passions

There are many causes and sectors that need support in South Africa, such as social welfare, education, health, nutrition, sanitation, environment, human rights, animal welfare, the arts, and more.

Shekel says, ‘Individuals significantly amplify their impact by devoting time and resources to organizations and causes that ignite their passion. Utilize online platforms such as Relate.org.za to explore a diverse array of opportunities for donation or volunteering with various charities nationwide.’

Looking for a charity to support? We have several charity lists which you can browse here.

Contact the charity directly

Engaging directly with charities allows donors to understand their specific needs and how they can best contribute with their available resources.

Shekel says. ‘This direct communication prevents the redundancy of donations, ensuring that charities can address a broader spectrum of needs more effectively.

Tax benefits

Consider the tax benefits of giving to charity. Charities want you to do this because it keeps the turnstile spinning – meaning they get to retain donors

If you donate to a Public Benefit Organisation (PBO) that is approved by the South African Revenue Service (SARS) under section 18A of the Income Tax Act, you can claim a deduction of up to 10% of your taxable income for that year. However, not all donations qualify for tax deductions, so make sure you get a receipt from the charity and consult a tax professional if you have any questions.

‘You will need a valid receipt from the PBO to claim this deduction. You can also donate assets, such as shares or property, to a PBO and avoid paying capital gains tax on the donation,’ says Shekel.

Consider giving regularly and long-term

One-time donations are always appreciated, but they can also create uncertainty and instability for charities that rely on them.

If you want to make a lasting difference, consider setting up a monthly or annual donation that provides a steady and predictable income for the charity. This way, you can help them plan, budget effectively, and sustain their impact over time.

Be kind to charities

Charities face a multitude of challenges, including limited resources and increasing demand for support among other challenges.

‘Running a charity presents considerable challenges, further compounded by the current economic climate that constrains resource impact and intensifies social issues. It’s important to recognize and value the efforts and hurdles charities navigate. Approaching them with kindness and compassion, aiming to meet them halfway, can make a significant difference,’ adds Shekel.

Donating to a charity can be a rewarding and meaningful way to make a difference in the lives of others and in your own. By following these tips, you can ensure that your donation is well-informed, wisely spent, and much appreciated.
