NSPCA inspector’s courageous investigation leads to the conviction of a dog’s axed killer.
Western Cape, South Africa (06 March 2024) – The National Council of SPCAs (NSPCA) has reason to celebrate as justice has been served in a recent case of egregious animal cruelty.
Norman Tiseco Mothudi, the perpetrator behind a horrifying act of violence against a defenceless dog, has been convicted for his unforgivable actions.
The distressing incident came to light on 01 August 2023 when the NSPCA received a distressing complaint accompanied by a video capturing the heart-wrenching scene of a man mercilessly striking a dog to death with an axe. What made this already horrific act even more appalling was the fact that it unfolded in the presence of a minor child, who was forced to witness the gruesome ordeal while holding the dog on a long rope.
In response to the distressing report, NSPCA Inspector Mpho Mokoena exemplified the true essence of compassion and duty. With unwavering determination, Inspector Mokoena journeyed to Olifantshoek, Northern Cape, where the heinous crime had taken place. There, in the middle of the chilling evidence, Inspector Mokoena conducted a thorough investigation and courageously exhumed the dog’s carcass for a post-mortem examination.
Through meticulous efforts, the perpetrator, Mr Mothudi, was identified, leading to a warranted inspection of his property.
Shockingly, the inspection uncovered not only the cruel killing of the dog but also the deplorable conditions in which another dog, a Boerboel type, was being kept. Reacting swiftly, Inspector Mokoena intervened and seized the suffering animal from its dire circumstances.
The wheels of justice turned decisively on 13 February 2024, as the Kathu Magistrates’ Court delivered its verdict. Mr Mothudi was sentenced to four months imprisonment or a fine of four thousand Rand. Moreover, recognising the severity of his actions, the court declared him unfit to possess a firearm.
“This conviction is a reminder that the NSPCA stands resolute in the face of animal cruelty and that every animal is deserving of our utmost care and protection,” Inspector Mokoena emphasised.
The NSPCA views this conviction as a significant milestone in its ongoing battle against animal cruelty. It is hoped that this verdict will serve as a potent deterrent to those who would consider committing such heinous acts in the future. The NSPCA remains steadfast in its mission to advocate for the humane treatment of all animals and urges the public to seek assistance from their nearest SPCA if they find themselves unable to care for their animals, rather than resorting to inhumane actions.
