Dolly Hlongwane is mobilising Joburg CBD residents in honour of the late Phillip Krinsky, sparking a community cleanup drive!

spar hero of the week

Johannesburg, South Africa (26 February 2024) – In the heart of Johannesburg’s bustling Central Business District (CBD), amidst the hustle and bustle of daily life, a remarkable story of community spirit and resilience is unfolding.

Meet Dolly Hlongwane, a spirited Zimbabwean whose dedication to her neighbourhood is inspiring a wave of positive change.

Dolly has become a symbol of hope in her community, rallying residents to take action and reclaim their streets. In memory of the beloved Phillip Krinsky, whose tragic passing left a void in the hearts of many, Dolly has spearheaded efforts to clean up the streets of Honey, Mitchell, and Fife Streets in Berea, Johannesburg.

Phillip’s life was cut short after a courageous battle following a harrowing encounter during an attempted hijacking. Determined to honour his memory, Dolly has galvanised her neighbours to join hands in a collective effort to revitalise their surroundings. Despite facing adversity and even enduring abuse from some local residents, Dolly remains unwavering in her commitment to making a difference. Her boundless energy and unwavering dedication have become the backbone of this powerful community-driven initiative.

Beyond organising clean-up campaigns, Dolly has invested considerable time and resources into fostering unity and improving neighbourhood infrastructure. From arranging a heartfelt memorial service for Phillip to spearheading the installation of a gate to secure the local substation, her impact reverberates throughout the community.

Notably, Dolly’s efforts have not gone unnoticed. Several local residents and property owners have stepped up to support initiatives aimed at enhancing community safety and cohesion. Together, they recognise the importance of safeguarding vital resources such as the local substation, which plays a pivotal role in ensuring access to electricity for all.

However, Dolly’s work is far from over. Recognising the pressing need to address ongoing challenges, she has initiated a fundraising drive to acquire essential equipment, including a garden trimmer. This tool will enable residents to tackle overgrown vegetation and maintain cleaner, safer streets for all.

Through her actions, she is proving that, indeed, the power to effect change lies within each and every one of us.

Discover how painted superhero masks are transforming the cancer treatment experience for children, instilling courage and resilience in the face of adversity.

spar hero of the week

South Africa (20 February 2024) – Over the past five decades, substantial advances in available treatments have led to large improvements in childhood cancer survival rates which have increased from 30% in the 1960s to now up to 80% in most countries.

Despite this, the treatment journey for children diagnosed with cancer may be daunting and uncertain.

Janica Smit, the radiotherapy lead at Life Eugene Marais Hospital in Pretoria, noticed a common thread among her young patients—a palpable anxiety during their radiotherapy sessions. The culprit? The formidable thermoplastic mask, designed to immobilise them during treatment. Alone in the bunker, these children grapple with their fears as they confront the daunting reality of cancer treatment.

Driven by a mission to alleviate this distress, Smit embarked on a journey to reimagine the radiotherapy experience for her young charges. Drawing inspiration from innovative practices around the world, she stumbled upon a beacon of hope: painting the masks to resemble superheroes.

“I delved into research, seeking solutions to enhance the journey for our pediatric patients,” she shares. “While some institutions opt for general anaesthesia to ensure stillness during treatment, I was captivated by the idea of infusing creativity into our approach.”

Navigating the complexities of medical safety, Smit meticulously selected paints devoid of substances that might react adversely with radiation. Collaborating closely with the medical physics team, she forged ahead with her vision, determined to transform mundane masks into symbols of courage and resilience.

The process is labour-intensive, requiring patience and precision. Each mask undergoes a metamorphosis over two nights, as layers of paint bring beloved characters to life. From the iconic Spiderman to beloved Barbie, every stroke of the brush symbolizes a child’s journey from vulnerability to valour.

And the impact has been profound. Since the inception of the painted masks, not a single child has required general anaesthesia.

“I started with this special project to help reduce my patient’s stress levels. By allowing them to wear the mask of their favourite hero, they’re encouraged to be brave and to face their fears.”

Indeed, the significance of Smit’s endeavour resonates deeply as we united to commemorate International Childhood Cancer Day on February 15, 2024.

In the face of adversity, may we always find the strength to embrace our inner superheroes and emerge victorious against the darkest of foes.

A seagull stuck in an unfortunate situation at the top of a 20m lamppost was rescued thanks to an everyday hero who obviously isn’t afraid of heights and bravely went above and beyond in every literal sense. Take a look!

spar hero of the week

Gordon’s Bay, South Africa (12 February 2024) — A seagull found itself in a sticky situation in Gordon’s Bay recently after it ended up stuck at the top of a 20-metre lamppost.

According to diving centre Just Africa Scuba who found the bird in the distressing circumstance, the seagull had reportedly gotten tangled up in a fishing line that was hanging from the pole.

This caused the seagull to naturally attempt to free itself but to no avail. After several calls to rescue services were made and amounted to no action, one brave man took matters under his own wings.

JJ Engelbrecht, described as a “passionate conservationist” by his mom—who proudly shared the story alongside Just Africa Scuba—was not going to let the seagull flap around hopelessly. As such, he undertook the kind of task that would give anyone with a fear of heights sleepless nights and began climbing the 20-metre lamppost!

While this kind of bravery is not advisable for those who do not have the correct equipment or training, JJ’s climb was something out of a movie. Bare-footed and unphased, he made his way right to the top as though climbing a jungle gym at school. In no time, he reached the seagull, freed the bird enabling it to fly away on its merry way and potentially earned himself a new career as a daredevil.

Watch: JJ in Action!

The community has rightly approved JJ as a hero without a cape (though he might need one if he decides to continue extreme climbing adventures), and we couldn’t agree more.

After a police officer encountered homeless Siyabonga, he knew the ambitious young man had a future far brighter than the streetlights and became determined to help him get back on his feet:

Durban, South Africa (05 February 2024) — A chance encounter led Shiven Latchman, a policeman based in Durban and Siyabonga Phewa, a homeless but incredibly ambitious man, to meet during a morning patrol on the M4.

Very quickly, officer Latchman realised that Siyabonga had wonderful manners and an extreme intelligence about him. A former Sports Science student who once had a bursary but was not able to complete his studies, Siya’s story touched the policeman’s heart.

“I was born into an unstable family in all accounts,” Siya shares of how overcoming challenges began at an early age for him. Despite being entered into the government orphanage system at just 5 years old, he eventually found a home at the Malvern Child and Youth Care Centre, and soon thereafter, his life’s fire.

“Initially, I was no bright student. In grade 3 I could barely read let alone write. I remember being on the same colour coded set book while my friends progressed as planned to advanced levels of reading,” he continues.

But, ambitious Siya found his passion in sport, and relished in all parts of it.

“I ran, jumped, threw and swam all which (not bragging) I was way off the other students in school and area,” Siya comments with article clippings to back his brag.

His triumphs in sport led him to land a bursary at Pinelands Boys High School, where he would go on to sharpen his academics and play provincial soccer.

But in matric, things took what Siya calls “the inevitable turn”, as he realised becoming a professional athlete requires more than talent, but funding. Club trials were also a challenge, not least because of the pandemic halting his training, but also due to not having footage of his matches recorded.

“I didn’t have the privelege of having a person (or to even hire one) to record my games,” he furthers.

The towel hadn’t been thrown in for Siya quite yet, as he still managed to get a bursary to study Sport Science. That, however, could not be maintained.

Despite overcoming so much in his and achieving where he was told it counted, as of June 2023,  Siya found himself homeless; working odd jobs to live.

Officer Latchman encouraged Siya to write about his journey, so that anyone who was in a position to help him in any way with a job or accommodation (Siya was not looking for donations, but opportunities) might come across his words.

Since Shiven came into Siya’s life and shared his story, the policeman has teamed up with another Good Samaritan, Mandy Kidson. With the two in Siya’s corner and a community rooting for the young man, wonderful things have started to unfold.

Together, Mandy and Shiven took Siya to a temporary accommodation spot and place of safety where he could safely enjoy and appreciate all the support from those touched by his story.

In a recent update, Shiven shared that Siya is already out of the shelter and has moved into a more permanent solution with a family, who he and Mandy will work with on this new, very exciting path of hope.

“There is so much happening daily. We’ve been inundated with job offers and donations. We are just letting Siya settle and get comfy,” says Shiven.

A very good thing in the making as Siya lands on his feet, and we can’t wait to see where this kindness takes him.

Check out Siya’s achievements:

This is a developing story!

A dog mom walked and wheeled the extra mile for her Milo (multiple times) to make sure he got the care he needed from the SPCA:

Grassy Park, South Africa (28 January 2024) — In a heartwarming testament of how far some pet owners are willing to go for their dogs, Chanté van Rooyen missioned for multiple days, without hesitation, so that her dog Milo could get the fighting chance he deserves to beat a life-threatening illness.

For consecutive days, Chanté and Milo missioned to the Cape of Good Hope SPCA after her dog needed treatment for his parvovirus. Parvovirus is the stuff of sleepless nights for loving pet owners, as it can be deadly.

However, this was no regular journey to the SPCA. Chanté committed to making sure Milo was as comfortable as possible by sitting him in a wheelchair while she did the trekking in Cape Town’s hectic heat. The distance saw them mission nearly an hour every day for five days while Milo got his outbound treatment.

While many might’ve said the trek was too far, hot, or that getting him there just wasn’t an option, Chanté made a plan for her pooch, as all responsible pet owners should.

The Cape of Good Hope SPCA were very touched by her commitment, sharing:

“The sight of her coming in our gates has given us a much-needed daily dose of inspiration because it reminded us of the incredible power of the bond between a pet and an owner who cares and just what lengths some pet owners will go to for the well-being of their animals.

“Thank you Chanté for your dedication to Milo, for nursing him and making sure he never missed a treatment no matter how difficult it was for you.”

Chanté’s dedication rings bells of another animal hero—Lister Maseko, who carried her dog Nicky on her back to the Boksburg SPCA and inspired her community.

Cape Town, South Africa (18 January 2024) – The Two Oceans Aquarium Foundation is highlighting its “ocean guardians” – These people play a vital role in supporting marine life within the Aquarium, the waterfront or the greater Western Cape. They recently honoured seal monitor Ayanda Cimani.

Ayanda plays a vital role within the V&A Waterfront precinct Marine Wildlife Management Programme run by the aquarium’s foundation. He monitors the Cape Fur Seals that use the boat platforms as resting places, making sure they are healthy and working to disentangle them from any fishing debris or human pollution.

Ayanda is being honoured for his proficiency and high success rate in disentangling any seals.

“As a Seal Monitor, Ayanda patrols the waterways, harbour, and surrounds with a watchful eye out for entangled or injured seals. 💙

He disentangles seals from underneath the Seal Platforms and from the ground, removing plastic, raffia, nylon, and other materials from their necks and flippers. In 2023, Ayanda disentangled 29 seals: the highest success rate of any of our Wildlife Monitors!”

The team is needed because seals often find themselves tangled up in nets and pieces of plastic. Sometimes, these seals will live with the pollution attached to their bodies for far too long. With this awesome team at hand, any time there is a seal in need, they work to save it. Even if it takes weeks to catch the clever seals.

Cape fur seals feed on shoaling fish, squid, octopus, sharks and rays, all of which sometimes find their way into the maze of the waterfront, making the area a great place for the seals to hang out. You can watch a successful stealthy disentanglement here.

Llandudno, South Africa (05 January 2024) – Two heroes from DARG are being praised for their efforts in rescuing a dog in the Llandudno Ravine. Brothers James and Steve Munthali, who work at DARG, took on the hike to help the family of the distressed hound.

DARG is a pro-life, non-profit organisation that rescues, cares for, sterilises and rehomes previously abused, neglected and abandoned cats and dogs. The incredible organisation provides a crucial role for the communities of Imizamo Yethu, Hangberg and the greater Hout Bay area.

By the time James and Steve got back to the family waiting in the parking lot, it was late but the Hout Bay Vet team were waiting after hours for the family so their dog could be checked over.

“The DARG TEAM to the rescue!!! We received a call yesterday afternoon about a dog in distress up Llandudno Ravine.

Our two guys hiked up to assist and took turns carrying the dog back down. He was welcomed by a very distressed family in the parking lot and was rushed to Hout Bay Vet to be checked. Thank goodness he is going to be OK. Thank you to our incredible guys James and Steve – you are truly heroes!

Thank you too to Hout Bay Vet and your staff for staying after hours to assist: Dr Pam you have a heart of gold.”

James and Steve are the subjects of hundreds of comments praising their efforts. This isn’t the first time a DARG  team member has made headlines for this kind of effort. Last year February, Chester Kulambone also helped carry a distressed dog down the mountain.

An unsung champion of Camps Bay—Joy Chimwemwe Chisemphere—helped fill up bags and bags of trash that rolled in with the New Year, resulting in his own personal record for the amount of waste collected. While his efforts are top-class, the same can’t be said for those who left a mess in Cape Town’s midst:

SPAR Hero Banner

Camps Bay, South Africa (04 January 2023) — After a New Year’s session that was so packed in Cape Town you’d be forgiven for wondering if there are still motorists stuck in traffic along the Atlantic Seaboard, it comes to no one’s surprise that an abundance of trash was sadly left behind.

It’s the unfortunate irony of the New Year celebrations where, for as much as the opportunity to embark on new and helpful journeys is presented to all of us, there are those who wish to pack old and harmful perspectives for the ride.

However, thanks to heroes like Joy Chimwemwe Chisemphere from Malawi, the trash scales were somewhat balanced, bashed, bagged and eventually banished from the beach!

Joy was one of the powerhouses who dedicated the beginning of 2024 to taking on the brunt of what thousands of beach goers left behind in bags and bags of litter and an estimate of almost 1000 bottles. From Bakoven Beach to Houghton Road and Camps Bay Drive, waste took up way too much space. However, volunteers at initiative Camps Bay Clean were instrumental in making sure other people’s carelessness did not stick around for long.

According to Chris von Ulmenstein, who is Joy’s teammate in cleanliness at Camps Bay Clean, fifty-nine bags of litter were filled by Joy alone in total. This was the largest number of bags Joy has ever tackled in his time tidying up—which is a testament to just how much trash would’ve made a home on the beach without efforts like his!

While we are immensely grateful to the helpers and heroes, we can’t help but wonder how people are still confusing natural spaces for bins in 2024. We take our hats off to heroes like Joy and Chris. But, in the same breath, we can’t wait for the day when there is simply no trash in sight for massive clean ups to be necessary at all. Is that too big of a New Year’s wish?

“We won’t give up until we’re sure that no animal in need of help has been left behind,” says the SPCA’s Wildlife Cadet Inspector Bryan Arendse.

Western Cape, South Africa (22 December 2023) – Determined ground firefighting efforts supported by water-bombing helicopters continue on the Simon’s Town mountain slopes as the Cape of Good Hope SPCA’s search and rescue team scours the estimated 450 hectares of scorched earth for animal survivors.

“We’ve been at the site of the fire since the news broke”, says Belinda Abraham, Spokesperson for the Cape of Good Hope SPCA.

“The fire was raging, and it was hard to stand by throughout the night, knowing the flames were claiming victims but we had to wait until the area was deemed safe enough for us to enter”.

Battling uneven terrain and seemingly solid ground that quickly gives way, our team are regularly finding themselves knee-deep in hot ash and small flare-ups are regularly occurring around them. The ground remains hot and the search conditions are difficult. The loss of life is devastating to see and we’ve come across the charred and burnt remains of snakes, tortoises and lizards all of whom succumbed to either the smoke or the flames.

“It’s heartbreaking to find the lifeless bodies of the animals that didn’t make it. It is a huge loss for this unique habitat and our search and rescue efforts continue with urgency to find any surviving or injured animals. We won’t give up until we’re sure that no animal in need of help has been left behind,” says the SPCA’s Wildlife Cadet Inspector Bryan Arendse.

Fortunately, we are finding survivors who were able to seek shelter in time or were lucky enough to be in protected areas when the fire swept through.

We’ve been able to treat some animals in the field who have been found in dehydrated states but have recovered sufficiently with the offer of water or a water bath and could be immediately released in a safe area.

Arendse says “We’re thankful for these moments that show our efforts are not in vain”.

Rescue efforts will span several days and at this time of year, the SPCA already faces significant challenges with high volumes of animal admissions already stretching resources to their limits.

“Donations in support of our search and rescue efforts would be greatly appreciated,” says Abraham. “We are not funded by government and we need donations to cover the costs of fuel, man hours, overtime and potentially the treatment and rehabilitation of animal fire victims”.

Wildlife will have been displaced and the public are called on to monitor the Simon’s Town outskirts for displaced animals and to alert us if any are in need of help.

“Please call us if you come across any animals in need of help on 0217004158/9 or 0833261604”, says Abraham, we are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to respond to animals in crisis”.

You can also help by picking up small animals or birds who are injured and keeping them in a ventilated cardboard box covered with a towel to minimise stress before calling us to collect them.

Remember that wild animals can be aggressive and injured wild animals additionally so.

You can also place shallow bowls of water in your gardens to help animals in need of water. Please add some rocks to the bowl so small animals can quench their thirst without drowning.

“It’s fine to put water down but please don’t put food out for the baboons. We’re looking out for them and getting updates on troop locations and their proximity to the fire. They are very intelligent and they’re doing a good job of keeping themselves safe. We won’t hesitate to help them if this becomes necessary. Feeding them is not only illegal, it is retaining them in an area currently prone to flare-ups and putting them at risk of harm in many other ways too.”

Observatory, South Africa (12 December 2023) – Niven O’Malley is being hailed a hero after he witnessed a child abduction in progress and stopped it from happening. The father of the young lady, who was almost taken, was so thankful he emailed Niven’s employer Courier Guy to share what he had done.

According to thankful father, Liam Van Zyl, his 7-year-old daughter was waiting for him outside the school when a Grey Toyota Corolla pulled up next to her, and one of the men inside started trying to pull her into the car. Liam was just around the corner as the incident was taking place.

Niven, who is a regular Courier Guy for Liam, saw the commotion and intervened. As Niven often delivers to the Van Zyl family, he recognised Tamia and immediately called out to her. As she struggled to pull her arm free, he ran over, pulling out his phone to take video of the men in the car. He managed to get to Tamia in time and chased the abductors off in the process.

Worried for her safety, he delivered a very scared Tamia to Liam, who was around the corner, and the pair shared the harrowing tale of the abduction.

What was better still was that because he had filmed the intense moment, he captured the license plates of the vehicle and was able to share this with Liam, too.

While Tamia was rattled by the attempted abduction and her arm had some bruising, she is thankfully safe and back with her dad – all thanks to Niven’s quick actions. Liam has been able to use the footage to alert the police to the attempted abduction, and they are now on the lookout for the criminals.

“If it wasn’t for Niven, who knows where my daughter would’ve been; I just want to say a big thanks to Niven I appreciate it alot”
