The catch of the day is some very good news: Len Matthews has surpassed his fundraising goal in the fight against cancer thanks to fishermen and kind-hearted communities across the country!
Klerksdorp, South Africa (09 February 2024) — The catch of the day for the Matthews family outdid any fish Len had ever caught over his years out at sea. Said catch is some very good news—Len now has a real fighting chance against cancer and hope for his fight stronger than ever thanks to the fishermen and communities that help cast his financial worries aside.
Len’s campaign, “Help Len Matthews Reel in Hope” was a plea for a lifeline. This for a family who did not have the medical insurance to cover the costs of his treatment.
Diagnosed with the terrible challenge of the Big C and in a situation where his family and wife Alma attempted to help in every possible way, it was his son who opted to reach out to the communities (both in fishing circles and beyond) that have so often show support for those in their darkest hours.
Fishermen, strangers, friends and family responded to the call with open and loving arms. Together, they have surpassed the fisherman’s goal of R130,000, with R74,700 raised offline.
Len has been described as a cherished member of fishing communities; loved by those who know him for his resilience and spirit. Thanks to the net of support he’s been enveloped in, hope has certainly been reeled in.
Meanwhile, in other news of community kindness making magic happen, the Sunflower Sky Hike (where cancer warriors, survivors and their loved ones have united in solidarity for 17 years) is happening again this year with a cause extra close to home in mind.
The couple behind the hike (the Tyrers) are facing cancer more directly than ever after their son, Jarryd, was diagnosed with a carcinoid lung tumour.
