Every Year, ocean lovers gather in the Western Cape for the iconic Wavescape Surf and Ocean Festival. But 2024 might be the most special one yet as it marks 20 brilliant years of the festival, all its hopes and impact!

Western Cape, South Africa (27 February 2024) — Every year, the Wavescape Surf and Ocean Festival gathers fierce lovers of our seas. Surfboards turn into art projects that raise funds for causes looking after both aquatic and land-dwelling citizens. Films spotlight ocean-related moments of wonder and woe. Beach clean-ups, conversations around conservation and a celebration of love for our precious oceans and surrounds are all a big part of the Wavescape Surf and Ocean Festival. And this year, they’re celebrating 20 years of all this awesomeness!

The 2024 fest isn’t just a big reflection of what 20 years of passion have turned into. It’s also an inspiring dose of hope and growth.

Back in 2004, the Wavescape Festival was born simply as a surf film festival. But, as people around the world became more concerned with our impact on our global home, those who spend an abundant amount of time enjoying nature’s playground (like surfers) began to think differently about what a festival like Wavescape could achieve.

Today the Wavescape Surf and Ocean Festival is one of the most exciting eco-art festivals in the Western Cape. With every year, the festival leaves a souvenir of impact behind—like the gorgeous public art gift left on the Sea Point Promenade in 2022, and R712,000 was raised by the artboard auction in 2023.

The festival will swell into action soon, with events set to cruise from 1-13 March.

Those keen to attend can look forward to film screenings, the artboard charity auction (which will raise funds for the NSRI, Shark Spotters, Ocean Pledge, 9 MilesProject and the beach Co-op) and a beach clean up and queer surf meets in Muizenberg. Not to mention a special masterclass for ocean filmmakers to raise even more awareness around ocean storytelling!
