Dolly Hlongwane is mobilising Joburg CBD residents in honour of the late Phillip Krinsky, sparking a community cleanup drive!
Johannesburg, South Africa (26 February 2024) – In the heart of Johannesburg’s bustling Central Business District (CBD), amidst the hustle and bustle of daily life, a remarkable story of community spirit and resilience is unfolding.
Meet Dolly Hlongwane, a spirited Zimbabwean whose dedication to her neighbourhood is inspiring a wave of positive change.
Dolly has become a symbol of hope in her community, rallying residents to take action and reclaim their streets. In memory of the beloved Phillip Krinsky, whose tragic passing left a void in the hearts of many, Dolly has spearheaded efforts to clean up the streets of Honey, Mitchell, and Fife Streets in Berea, Johannesburg.
Phillip’s life was cut short after a courageous battle following a harrowing encounter during an attempted hijacking. Determined to honour his memory, Dolly has galvanised her neighbours to join hands in a collective effort to revitalise their surroundings. Despite facing adversity and even enduring abuse from some local residents, Dolly remains unwavering in her commitment to making a difference. Her boundless energy and unwavering dedication have become the backbone of this powerful community-driven initiative.
Beyond organising clean-up campaigns, Dolly has invested considerable time and resources into fostering unity and improving neighbourhood infrastructure. From arranging a heartfelt memorial service for Phillip to spearheading the installation of a gate to secure the local substation, her impact reverberates throughout the community.
Notably, Dolly’s efforts have not gone unnoticed. Several local residents and property owners have stepped up to support initiatives aimed at enhancing community safety and cohesion. Together, they recognise the importance of safeguarding vital resources such as the local substation, which plays a pivotal role in ensuring access to electricity for all.
However, Dolly’s work is far from over. Recognising the pressing need to address ongoing challenges, she has initiated a fundraising drive to acquire essential equipment, including a garden trimmer. This tool will enable residents to tackle overgrown vegetation and maintain cleaner, safer streets for all.
Through her actions, she is proving that, indeed, the power to effect change lies within each and every one of us.
